I hope Barack will use this - only the latest in a long history of illegal shootings - to reduce the number of guns in this country. We will never eliminate the horror, but we can bring our laws up to a respectable level. Our murder rate is 11 times higher than any other country. Our police shoot people at a rate 62 times higher than any other country. There 280 million guns here - one for every man, woman and child. Gun laws won't do much to stop these shootings. But they will raise awareness of their dangers, something that shouldn't require the death of 20 children sitting in a kindergarten classroom to do.

No one can eliminate guns altogether, it is against the constitutional rights. I have several guns but I also have them in a secured safe and I also have had rifle and small arms training in both the military and civilian worlds. That said, I agree after the events of the last few years as well as knowing that for many the stress and pressures of living in this time and economy will deteriorate many peoples minds (many of whom maybe unstable at best already) some of our laws need to be stricter for gun control. Strengthen laws stating firearm classes are mandatory for all registered and first time owners or perhaps going as far as having all gun owners submit to a psychiatric compentency test paid for out of the owner's pocket. Having to look at both sides, this of course, will obviously only create a wider and much more lucrative black market demand and where there is demand, supply is only inevitable. Is there any good answer, no. The only real answer I have is that I have no answer, only great sorrow over another senseless horrific tragedy that will cast another dark stain on not just American history but Mankind's history. Thoughts and prayers because I can NOT fathom what it would be like to not have the privilege and pleasure of watching your child grow and getting to know them as an adult.

I don't believe guns should be illegal but someone please tell me what is the problem with background checks and waiting periods after purchasing a gun? If you're not hiding anything or going to use it for crime those things don't harm you in any way. Should a man with a history of domestic violence be able to get mad at his wife, go out and buy a gun and take it home the same night?

I definitely think we can make it harder for whackos to get guns without infringing on anyone's rights.

Its hard wrap your head around those minutes inside those classrooms with that gunman. Remember kindergarten?

speaking for myself. the waiting period for taking my semi-autos home was 5 full days. i assume a background check, ATF type deal was done. i dont know what happens in gun shows. i guess you just pay the man and walk out. i dont know.

people who want to use firearms for the purpose of mass shootings like such are going to get them legally or illegally. why try to take away guns from people who have them legally for protection? so we have no way to protect ourselves if an armed gunman comes into my house or breaks into my car and threatens the life or my child's life?

do you think all these drug dealers with ak-47s or ar-15s purchased and registered their guns legally? they dont obey the law now... signing a law to reduce guns will sure make they obey the law then.

Finally agree with Bacon on something, the thing that happened yesterday has sickened me to the core. Never thought there would be news/headlines that would have an effect like this, but now it has happened. Don't know if gun legislation is the answer, the firearms were sold to his mother who apparently died as a result of her purchase. Very frightening.

Protection from who? Neighbors and family are the ones who break in your house. You shouldn't be allowed to have military weapons to protect yourself from an imaginary boogeyman. The odds of a total stranger choosing your house, and breaking in at night when you're home (no one's that stupid), making enough noise for you to wake up, get your gun, confront the intruder and have a gunbattle (what, you think they won't have a gun?) are so slim, they don't exist. Gun rights are clear - just don't use the "protection" bullshit. It doesn't work.

No one will ever propose taking everyone's guns in this country. So stop the 2nd amendment bullshit. High capacity magazines and assult rifles designed exclusively to kill men during war have no purpose outside of it. Gun show purchases must be outlawed and five-day periods must be extended and background checks must be made.

We always do nothing after our children are massacred. Eight children die a day in gun violence here. It's time to stop making it easy. Guns will always be a part of our society. But the benefits that gunnuts get from being permitted to own military weapons no longer outweight the cost to the rest of us.

You need to read a little news again. This guy didn't legally own these guns. He stole them from his mother after he killed her. Once again people, its the criminal that kills innocent kids, not the guns. We have background checks, we have laws, we just need to enforce what currently on the books, as usual. The scary thing is our drive-by media stirs you useful ignorant types into a frenzy calling for stronger gun control laws and you bite on it, because emotions outweigh rational thought. Rahm Emanuel taught President Obama to use emergencies to "get stuff done that we couldn't do otherwise". We have to rationally look at stuff, not knee jerk react to situations like this.
