Why do so many people participate in giving things up for lent? It's stupid. If you're doing something that you shouldn't be doing, giving it up for a month and a half and then returning to it isn't really going to solve much.

I agree, but then again there are those who "fast and pray" and give up food for a day or two or three. I guess there must be something to that since we are told to do so in the Bible.

I didn't say anything about fasting. That's a different topic.

You must not be Catholic or familiar with the Church's practices, louda. Cindi (from P-burg)was right. Catholics do fast on certain days throughout the Lenten Season - such as Fridays (and no red meat - hence, the fish), Good Friday, Ash Wednesday.

One is also encouraged to give something up for Lent, usually a six-week stint, such as a bad habit or something sacrificial.(i.e. be more patient, or give up "chocolate".)

Me, being the "good Catholic girl" that I am, but more Pentacostal these days, I have already stated on the Mardi Gras thread that I was going to give up "being nice", especially on here, since "being good" obviously didn't get me anywhere. Just a lot of nasty comments directed to me. So, I'm just gonna join the crowd. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

The ones that say they're fasting are bigger liars than religious people in general. You ever go 48 hours without food? The first 12 are cake. The next 12 are ok because you can sleep. The next 12 are almost impossible. The last 12 you'll eat a shoe. I fasted in Yosemite park once for almost 40 hours on a crazy-ass trip we took as recent grads. We wanted to see who could do it the longest. People were sneaking gummy bears when they went to take a shit in the woods. It was a sad day for honesty.

The only thing I'll ever give up for religion or fantasy is the moment it takes to roll my eyes.

Thanks, JCP, and to Louda:

There are traditionally forty days in Lent which are marked by fasting, both from foods and festivities, and by doing other acts of penance.

I know what it means. When I say fasting is a different activity, I mean fasting from all food. Selective fasting is ridiculous. The reason why lent is stupid is because it only involves giving up something bad for you, like candy or cola. If it's unhealthy 40 days before Easter, it is just as unhealthy the day after Easter when you go back to your Coca-Cola. That's really my point.

It's supposed to be symbolic, but also if you do have a bad habit, it is a great foundation to kick that habit. Hopefully, if one could overcome it for the 40 days, then they could continue on...

Nowadays, people ought to give up dope and booze for Lent. Wouldn't that be something?

And one bit of Lenten Trivia - MickeyD's started the Fish Sandwich at a McD's in Pittsburgh, PA. Such a lot contingent of Catholics in the city, with requests for it - as opposed to the hamburgers, on Fridays during Lent. It became so popular, the chain picked it up. That reminds me...

Or give it up for good. Lent is dumb. Most of the time, they spend the whole 40 days bitching and asking for people to sympathize with them. How symbolic is that? Screw symbols. Take real action to better yourself permanently.

You're sounding more like bacon these days as opposed to the "voice of reason". Where did everyone go? And what foreign entities have taken them over? Space Aliens? I want the real Topix characters! LOL

No, it just makes you feel successful and victorious that you got the fire started in the first place and were able to keep it going. For some men, I guess that would make them feel manly. And for some, they might have to keep fanning it. LOL

We don't sound any different than we always have. You are imagining things. I am a voice of reason. I think lent involves no reasoning. I think it is mindless sheep play from people who feel the need to pray to the dead mother of Jesus even though she has no special powers whatsoever other than being chosen as the mother of Christ. I think it is being employed by people who think that they need to confess their sins to an elder of their church rather than using a direct gateway to God through the Holy Spirit. I have a problem with a church who covers up the crimes of those same elders when they fondle little boys for decades and use the excuse of religious persecution.

Do you know why Catholics observe Lent? It's because Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days - fasting. If those who are observing Lent truly understood the basis and practiced a true "fasting" period, it would not be stupid. It would be powerful. How many of us Christians "fast and pray" today? Not many and not nearly enough! There is something to it when done in the right mind-set for the right reason or Jesus would not have done it. We are to follow His example in Baptism as well.
