Dale Zenner was in his car passing by a panhandler in Akron a week ago when the thought struck him. Full Story

Most of these people do not need to be on the streets if they don't want to. B.S. to this mental health crap. They are lazy and are looking for the easy way out, get a few bucks and drink it up or smoke it and start the next day off the same way again.
There may be a few that have mental health issues they appear to be the ones who talk to themselves and usually are at the places that give them help like Haven of Rest, etc.
I have been in Akron all of my life and see the same people in a lot of the same places doing the same things. The folks with mental problems for the most part seem to keep to themselves and the folks that would like us to believe they need help are begging. I KNOW THIS ISN'T true in all cases but from my experiences it is reality.
I have had to protect my family walking down the street in Akron and Cleveland from overzealous panhandlers on 3 occassions by physically pushing them back from my wife and kid walking all 3 times from either the Indians or Aeros games and stay away now from these events because of it.
Say what you want about the subject but most of these people could get free help for their alcoholism or drug addiction from many areas like the Brown Street Mission or Interval Brotherhood Home, etc. They would rather get a few bucks and a buzz than to work at being a productive citizen. And as for the others they are just taking advantage of you bleeding heart LIBERAL suckers who will give them money and think you are helping them when you are just ENABLING them. Mayor Don would rather get a few extra bucks from licensing these people than just saying no to them and making our streets safer and less aggravating. Oh and of course appeasing you Liberals he needs to get votes from!
And yes, that is the way I feel about it!
Looks like your psychiatry and clinical addiction counseling licenses must have both come through in the cereal box this morning.

Thanks for the cost free diagnoses.

The gentleman you are referring to suffers from a medical condition, which explains his manner of dress.
As for your final comment, he has much more than most.

Go figure, ABJ once again puts drivel in their paper and doesn't bother to fact check, hoping no one will notice their incompetence.
As for the true "homeless, will work for food, etc.," if they want to eat, they won't apply for a permit so they can get arrested and get 3 hots and a cot for a while in the county graybar hotel. I'm sick of seeing these people, permit or not, on the street corners, collecting more money in a day than I do in a week. There is work out there, most just don't want to do it when they can freeload off the backs of hard working people.
Dandy Don, do away with the permits and start arresting these idiots so they'll move to another city to panhandle!

How can a 50 year old be a Vietnam Veteran? 2008-50=1958 (birth year). Add 18 (age you can be drafted or volunteer) to 1958 and you get 1976. We left Vietnam in 1975.
Something is fishy. Perhaps he joined at 17!
Let us see his DD214. These idiots use any excuse for being lazy. Since they will work for food, take them out and let them clean around the roadways all day. Give them lunch and dinner at the end of the day. That should stop the work for food deal.

Too bad the Beacon didnt do their homework on this guy. He has been receiving a military nonservice pension for disability for a few years. He is a veteran of the Vietnam Era and will turn 51 next month. If the VA finds out he has unreported income he stands to lose his pension.

I'll stick with "working for food". As most foods give me gas, it's like a two-for-one deal! LOL!!

Just curious about one thing. When you see a guy standing with a sign, unless the sign says so, how can you tell if he is a sex offender or not?
I know a guy who is now 39 years old. For the last 20 years he has had to register as a sex offender. That makes you go "shoot him" in your mind, doesn't it?
Know what his offense was?
When he was 19, his girlfriend of 17 became pregnant after a prom night fling. Her mother called the police and had him arrested for sexual imposition.
That guy, now 39, is STILL WITH that "girlfriend", now 37 and his wife of 19 years, while the whistle blowing pig of a mother is on her 4th husband and still an alcoholic with a drug problem.
Who's really the offender here?
Those laws need to be revisited and the offenses more clearly defined. This guy did not molest a young child but was given the same penalty as someone who would.
So before you pull out the self righteous indignation about "sex offenders", find out more about the offense.
As much as I agree with your above statement...it is a terrible EXCEPTION to the rule.

Generally, if the offender can afford a descent atty. they can get just a slap on the wrist.

Unfortunately my mother in law is married to one and he is a despicable person. Sounds like he deserved the 20years of registering , instead of your friend. He got a week in jail and 10yrs of registering. He had additional charges a few yrs ago for the SAME thing and got his atty to weasel him out of this snag.

btw... this all occurred in Summit County within the last 5yrs.

Panhandling is a nusiance and harassment. To give these guys a license to disturb people is just plain wrong. Who in the world came up with this "brilliant" idea; The Donald?

That is incorrect, sir. You only need a social security number to get a job.
And the desire to find one.
What kind of self esteem do these people have to beg for money this way?
There is a guy who stands on Buckholzer Blvd begging.(Let's not give it a refined name. It is begging.) You can see the shame in his eyes. He stares at the ground, and if you look at him you can see the sadness in his eyes, the wondering "How did I end up this way?"
HIM, I give a buck every now and then. I can just tell that he would rather be working and that anything I give him does not go for cheap wine or crack. Or like the last bum they wrote about who lives under a bridge but always seems to have money for beer and smokes. When times get tough the vices have to go first.
I have seen that same blond haired man also begging at the intersection of hilbish and market st. My husband and I saw a female drop him off in the parking lot of the independence interstate movie theatre and sit in the parking lot while he begged at the intersection of bucholzer and independence. She sat in the car and waited for him. Why doesn't either person get a job. They both looked well fed to me. If he was truely that ashamed of what he was doing he would change it.

They only help the born again psycos ... you have to go to church to eat, if your not christian and don't go to church you starve. Haven of Rest is a crack pot program.
Exactly! I know someone that is staying there and their social worker dicriminates against them and other people. The Haven of Rest Minitries does not run to serve the Lord, if they did then why do they try to kick people out for no reason? If they are trying to help then the have no idea how to, they are not a very good place to go to. You also have to believe how they want you to to be able to stay there, if you disagree well then you're SOL because they don't care. I wish that people would stop supporting them and thinking that they are soooooo great, you'd have to stay there to know the real truth.
