It's been 10 years since my last visit to Holiday Sands, when I was younger. I'd like to take some relatives there, but I can't find any contact info. I've been told it was in Ravenna, but there's no phonebook listing. It sounds to me like it went out of business. This is unfortunate, as I thought it really had something unique to offer. If anybody could fill me in on its status, it would be much appreciated.

Just to clarify, it was waterpark, built on a fresh water lake, with a unique selection of metal waterslides, swings, and a playground.

I also went to Holiday Sands as a child. I too was recently thinking of returning with my kids. I enjoyed the metal mushrooms and watching everyone try to run on the barrels.. I have not been able to find a phone number either. I am going to ask my aunt if she remembers the address or location. If I can find it I will take a drive and see if it is still open. I will keep you posted if I should find anything further out.

I also spent time at Holiday Sands as a youth and then againabout 20 years ago as a young adult. I have not been able to find any information about the park for the past three years. I was told by somebody when I called a city department or chamber of commerce about three or four years ago that the park was being refurbished. It was a great place to spend a day, have a picnic and enjoy a great water park. Too bad it is not better publicized.
I hope that you find out about it Megan and post the results.
Thank-you.

Anyone interested in Holiday Sands might want to check out Clay's Park ( clayspark.com ). Very similar, but with more things like a campground. I went to Holiday Sands when I was younger, but I don't remember camping there. We went to Clay's Park this past weekend and it was really fun.

I'm also looking for Holiday Sands. Went there often in High School (1970s) and now would like to take my family. Surely someone must know where it is, or maybe it has a new name. I hope it hasn't become a housing development or strip mall.

BAD NEWS: Holiday Sands shut down about 4 or 5 years ago - rising insurance costs. Fitting considering the danger factor was part of the intrigue. Called the Kent Chamber of Commerce...said it was in Ravenna, OH and was recently purchased by Ravenna Moose Lodge. Called Ravenna M.L., they said it is the future home of their lodge. Lake is still there - catch and release fishing. But the slide, wheels, chains, swing, boards, etc are gone. The times they are a changin'.

That's sad.

I actually found it on Google Earth, it's off SR14 near SR5. I noticed from the aerial shot that the slide and stuff were gone. The only thing left is the platform where the swinging chains were.

We just drove past it today, on our way back to Cleve. from Pittsburgh. Everything's gone except the lake. Which got me to thinking about Wildwood (very similar) in Columbia Station. They had closed a few years ago 'to remodel,' but never reopened either. And then I googled Dover Lake Waterpark, and IT'S closed down now, too!!! Such a shame, because they were great places to take a whole family-safe, inexpensive and great exercise. Phooey. We wondered if property taxes and liability insurance is what's driving them all out of business? Wish there was a way to find out........it would be an interesting topic for a newspaper article.(Hint, hint Plain Dealer!!!)

I was in Ravenna the first week of August for another class' reunion and drove by Holiday Sands - I, too, was at least melancholy if not sad that they are no longer in business. I was a Sunday and holiday lifeguard at Holiday Sands in the mid-60's and my best friend (who now lives in Aurora) was a full-time guard while he went to Kent State.(Although he must be in his early 70's, I know that the owner, Fred Klohn, is still alive and kicking because he sends jokes to my Aurora friend who in turn transmits them to me.) If Sarah thought it was a dangerous place to visit, she should have seen it from a lifeguard's chair. When someone fell off one of the mushrooms or the big log-rolling) drums and apparently hit his/her head, you'd keep hoping that they'd come up - which they always did, thank goodness. We never lost anyone on those long ago weekends, but did perform too many underwater searches. We usually found the missing party in the woods. When I rotated into the row boat and floated off the bottom of the slide, it reminded me of a WWII naval battle with all the splashing from the slide and the large barrels. The dumbest thing I ever saw was someone looking UP the slide - fortunately, he ducked just before someone went roaring by headfirst and backwards. Like you folks, I have many, many happy memories of HS. Moreover, after driving through Streesboro three times that weekend, it is quite impressive how Streestboro has developed - wow!

we were regulars there for 40 years... my family went all the time and then when I grew up I took my kids. The nice people who owned it just couldn't keep up anymore. they were getting older, their kids really weren't interested in taking over, the costs of insurance were rising. They tried to sell it as it was, but finally just sold the land. An era gone...great memories...we have lots of them on film! that was a unique place. We were sorry to see it go. I think the place was open something like 43 years? I thank the owners for giving us that 40 years.

Quite hilarious that I found these commentaries. Like others mentioned, I have some great memories of Holiday Sands in the 70s. I had a big family and it was always a great time with my siblings. I still remember the announcement that came at the rest periods over the loud speaker: "Water saftey check. Every hour, on the hour." Love it! I never went on the giant slide becuase I was too little. I'd love to see how large it really was as an adult.

Holiday Sands located in Ravenna on SR 14 is closed. It has been for a few years. I heard that it went under due to high insurance premiums. Unfortunately, it is now just withering away.
