Okay, someone explain this to me... Like what the reasons could be for this.

I went in on taxes with someone. It's completely legit, they claimed my three sons because they had helped paid for their expenses, etc.

They originally told me that they were getting back $4,000. Well, today they're only saying they're getting back $900...

Can someone explain to me what happened with that? The person can't give me ANY reason for this - no student loans, etc... So... Idk..help? lol

It sounds like they r lying to you. UNLESS they owe fines or have a garnishment against them and I am not sure if it would take away from federal or state taxes. I would deff. look more into it though because I have kids & have gotten 6 grand back before. Like I said though taxes is not my profession but check into it.

depends on what kind of income they have...if alot of there income is from something like unemployment or social security or something like that it would not be considered EARNED income and they would not qualify for most of the credits and deductions. also im pretty sure they only hold fedral refunds for student loans not fines or anything like that.

If a state request a hold on funds for anything owed, it can be taken out of a federal refund. Child support can be taken. It sounds to me that they are just plain lying about it. As I said, the amount of EIC is based upon their earned income. I too got over 7,000 for 2 kids with my income. Also, if the kids did not live in their home for at least 6 months they don't qualify for the EIC.

Hi wonderin, Refunds can be withheld or reduced for a variety of debts to state agencies, including unpaid property taxes. This link may help you out..

I do not feel sorry for you, unless the person claiming your children is a parent, step-parent or legal guardian, what you are doing is illegal. So go ahead and report it and see what happens.

I sent a request in to the audit department to look for anyone is this area claiming 3 male children that are not their own and to audit them for the last 5 years which is a far back as we can go today.

Thank you "wonderin" for bringing this to our attention. I would hate to be the person that claimed these 3 boys.

"Lil" you're so misinformed it's ridiculous. Yes, if it's a civilian - say that my friend was doing it for me, completely illegal.

HOWEVER, the person I had do this was family who lived with me all year and supported the children. As long as it is a family member of the children - uncle, aunt, grandparent, etc - it is completely legal. Of the ones I listed, the person filing is a legal relative.

So please, do your research you silly, silly girl.

As long as a person has supported the children and they lived with them for 6 months or more they can claim them.

Ummmmmmmm if THEY supported the children, it would be THEIR refund, not yours, so why are you saying someone screwed YOU on taxes??? Sounds like an act of fraud that backfired in your face to me!

Silly, mabey but I work a tax paying job, I provide for my children. You never specified that it was a family member, I certainly would not allow someone who was not trustworthy to be a part of providing for my kids. Since you didn't claim your kids on your taxes, I'd guess you didn't work. Its just not fair that government assistance programs dont give w2s. When all of your friends and family that worked all year are getting money back its not fair that you aren't.

"IRS" You are so full of shit!! The IRS can only audit someone only as far as 3 years back!! Don't believe me, call them yourself! And another thing, an IRS agent isn't going to get on this website offering information and then telling someone that they will be audited! And furthermore, you do know that it is ILLEGAL to pose as someone of this nature, right?? I would say a little can of shut up is in order for you, my friend, lol!!!

this is the very reason the USA is going to Hell in a handbasket. People like almost everyone that posted on this thread. I work two jobs just to support my family and the government takes a HUGE hunk of my money for taxes. Then at the end of the year I barely break even. ANd sorry people that barely work at all, if any and get those huge refunds are absurd. You shouldn't be able to get back more than you pay in. I hope you did get screwed, what you are doing is fraud. All you sorry, lazy, self entititled people on the system will be have a rude awakening when the government finally goes bankrupt and then what are you going to do. MAKES ME SICK

If that happens, I guess I'll go on a murdering rampage, steal your shit and live the life of a gypsy.

Is that what you wanted me to say? No? Then don't respond with your idiotic remarks.

It is not fraud. It is legal.

I hesitated to post here in the first place, not because it was illegal but because there are so many stupid people in this town that do not know what they are talking about.

I work very hard at my job, pay my taxes, and if the government is willing to help people making min. wage with the earned income credit I will take it. This time of the year I can catch up on bills, buy much needed things I couldn't afford during the year, and spend a little on the kids because there was no money to spend for Christmas. I agree people who just sit back and draw government benefits without working should be ashamed trying to get people to claim their kids just so they can get money. Just don't lump people into one group with your perception of those who post
on here.

You are very wrong!! I'm currently being audited for 2008. I work very, very hard and I pay every year. It isn't fair at all
