Met a group from Cabelas in Trinidad this afternoon. They said they were in the area going to Raton as they are in serious contention about bringing in a store to the Raton area since the NRA is located there.

Let me guess, they're going to use the tent over on the south end???? THis is the biggest joke I have ever heard.....and if it's true, you really think our city leaders will let it happen??? Nope...they'll drive it away like they did Wal-Mart many years ago and any othr business that has wanted to do business in this town.

First we need some sort of un corrupted government. Then people need to realize that selling your 2bdr home for $150k is ridiculous in this town.(I mean why buy a 70 year old home for that price when you can go over the hill and get a new one for that price?) Then maybe a good shopping center for food,(we all know super save ain't what it used to be.) and possibly a decent clothing store? Bealls would be fantastic if the clothing didn't fall apart after a few washes. A few good (chain restaurants) would be nice at that point. Then start working on the streets, and condemned homes, if you can't fix it tear it down and sell the property. I think even a farmers market, and a mom and pop store would be nice here or there. What Raton has not realized is the economic loss for our people, stores are trying to still sell top dollar and we can't afford that, so yea you put a couple extra bucks in gas to go over the hill for all your shopping?! So do I, I mean come on we are not rio rancho or alburqurque? And real estate, super save, gas stations, Bealls, and all our stores need to realize that. Knock off a few cents or dollars and yea we might take the bargain.

It will not happen with the city gov how it is. How is it when the racetrack was being set up they kept getting shut down for supposed code violations delaying the project and costing it money. So in the end it was behind schedule and in the hole and got lost. Who was paid off for that to happen? Seriously? Look at the new court house. The floors are a mess. They are slanted and dropping so that means it was built on a bad foundation. Thats why doors there don't close properly. And what about the aquatic center? I heard the had water and plumbing problem. So how were these thing built with no inspections? Someone was bought off on all 3 projects and there needs to be an investigation into this matter.

Years ago, maybe 7 to 10, a guy started a campaign to bring Cabalas to Raton. He got petitions and sent them dozens of letters. In the end they said Raton was "too rural" to set up shop. Ever since then every couple of years someone says they heard a rumor they were coming to town. This is going to happen around the same time they build the La Quinta, the Flying J and the Race Track.

It is sad that Raton has gone so downhill and prices of homes are outrageous. One store to get groceries that is almost twice as high as walmart and they really want us to shop here??? I literally cannot afford to shop at SuperSave. Seriously, I purchased 8 items the other day and it was 48.00. And I did not buy any meat products.Everyone is trying to scrap and pay bills and Raton is way overpriced. Twenty years ago Raton had many, many opportunities to bring businesses into town and they were all shot down because they wanted Raton to become a retirement community. The Chamber of Commerce at that time was really pushing for that. So, "Sweet Tart", I totally agree with all that you are saying and I know alot of people feel the same way. Raton has lost its pride and its pretty sad.

If you meet these folks in Trinidad what was their purpose for being their ? Shouldn't they have been in the city they are expecting to open this new store at? Something does not add up. Sounds like a desperate attempt by a failing city government to draw attention from the irons already in the fire.
Nice try no dice you lose again!! Once the entire city understands that the government has failed them under our social contract elegantly described to John Locke. An agreement that we pay our taxes and the government provides for us. I say why should any of us pay our taxes ! Why should any of us shop Raton? Boycott I say boycott until we rid these basterds of our government. The municipality has failed us all !!!

They came because they had a program at the NRA. Why would a company have anything to do with raton. They have only over 42 stores in two countries. But will be building in raton....omg

In Compton, California you find a liquor store and a gun dealer on every block. Why is it that Raton has so many places where liquor can be purchased and now we are adding another out let to buy guns and ammo. Sounds just like the thing to do if your trying to kill off an entire community

Don't give me that crap about guns for sport and your American right. Half of you folks would love nothing more then put a few slugs in someone. It's a bad mistake for Raton to think this store will do anything for us. Someone will bring an entire fleet of family members and friends to opporate it . More nepotism.

Raton needs to concentrate on immediate tourism dollars. Simple attractions that are cost effective and bring large numbers of guests from our highways.

We are not going to revitalize our city by selling high dollar permits to hunt Vermejo or else where. Besides who makes that money? private companies. What's in it for citizens ? Cities of Gold Casino wanted the land where the casino now sits. Before the land was occupied as a public high school . The people asked for a new school in exchange for giving up the site . Now look at the area and how much it's changed in 20 years by one smart business decision that's a win win play for everyone . Raton's to greedy nothing will ever change until you people realize cause and effect .

The real problem is that there are a few people who are behind the scenes trying to manipulate things so they can make another buck or two. Look at Ron Schmeits and Penny Peryatl. Good job on "doing" the new city manager to talk him into buying your company with age old infrastructure. Saddling the city with another dinosaur. And getting her son a job, to boot!!!! City commissioners have GOT TO GO so we can get rid of the city manager. He is just out to make a buck for his girlfriend. Those commissioners are idiots to let him get away with all his crap. Whatever happened to his wife, anyway? Is her body out in the desert somewhere?

the italians and hispanics have ruled raton for decades. every major political body and city department. everything from the mayors office and police department to the street sweepers.

now we give the texans a chance and it seems they cant do any better.

There are NOT a lot of places to buy liquor in Raton. Try to find a real liquor store at 9pm on Friday night. This place is practically a tea-totaler town.
and now we are adding another out let to buy guns and ammo.
What do you mean by "another"? The nearest real firearms store is 180 miles away. Our two existing shops are (were) practically useless, and both are out of business now anyway.

Have you even been to Raton? You posting in the correct forum?

Ration is too isolated, not a good place for a Cabela's, the obvious location should be Albuquerque
