I have been in the process of relocating to Raton, NM I follow the forums and newspapers in your area very closely, so I can make decisions of schools, doctors, and other major decisions for my upcoming move. The reason I am writing is because I called Dr.Conder's office asking about becoming a patient, as she was a PCP in my insurance hand book, she and MiMi Moore. When I called, noone would return my calls for weeks. I called the hospital there in Raton asking for any information they may have on her. I called for customer service,I was transferred to a nurse. I absolutely dumbfounded when the nurse, suggested I not see her. When I asked why she stated that between me and her, this doctor was a seriously bad alcoholic. I thought she was pulling my leg. She suggested i see a doctor in Colorado 17 miles from Raton. I've read the forums about some of the doctors in this area. Is there anyone out there who can seriously be trusted for medical care? I need an answer.

Dr. Conder is a decent physician, albeit small town rumors may or may not exist regarding an alleged alcohol problem. Wow, that was poor service on account of the individual who answered the phone (who unless they identified themself as an R.N. was likely an nurse's aide).

If you are looking for primary adult care Dr. Conder is fine, although she does have bizarre office hours. The P.A.(if he is still in town) Rick Bayliss is a great guy and I enjoyed being treated by him.

The story of Dr. Aragon (which is a matter of public records) and his past transgressions of prescription fraud are sadly, true. He struck me as a very prudent physician.

These are my subjective opinions on the aforementioned providers, as a licensed health care provider and former Raton public health worker and resident. I do not know enough about the other providers in town to opine on them.

By the way, that statement about a nurse at MCMC hospital making such a statement perplexes me. I find it a bit hard to believe, I am a total fan of all the RN and LPN staff there, so it surprised me to read that. A majority of the long time nurses there are very hard working and dedicated, along with many of the support staff.

Not counting Julien, the senior male laboratory phlebotomist*
(*visit New Mexico state registered sex offender website, search by Raton zip code 87740 or "julien ward" I believe is his name).

From a traveling R.N. and a nurse of 20+ years, if you overlook the anonymous internet griping and nonsense, Raton isn't a bad place. The physicians are average, the nurses above average. The town its self is actually a great place with extremely low crime, low cost of living and clean air-water, etc. Schools are mediocre, with plenty of good kids who do graduate. The public safety is good, with an over worked and over criticized police force - along with a good local ambulance and fire department. The public utilities are a little pricey, but all in exchange for some relative piece of mind.

Sorry to be so lengthy, just my two cents. I worked there some time ago and have fond memories.

Whoever the nurse was, was absolutely not an aide, because I asked for the head nurse on that shift, because i myself am not that careless to take advice from a non professional..You speak of this phlebotomist (and I have cross referenced your information by the way.) If you truly believe that this person is not of good regard for this facility, then why do you doubt the fact that this nurse passed on this information to me? That kind of grasps me the wrong way in your comments. If the MCMC tolerates this type of persona within the lab, who says it cant exist in the nursing or the physician area as well? Even though you admire this part of the staff, does not mean that they are beyond human error. No offense old nurse, but you are only contradicting yourself. I don't even live there yet, what reason what I have to lie about a nurse I don't even know????? Think about it!

Well even if Raton is not the ideal place...at least it should keep you employed. Hope you work for a malpractice office. I thank you so much for your honesty. More people need to get on here and post their opinions. I appreciate old traveling nurse, but someone of the public I believe is more credible, because they have no reason to be biased or favorable to the medical staff in that area. Please encourage others in your area to give me more insight. Again thank you!

Found out about the lab tech. Gentleman after the fact; called and lodged my concerns. Hopefully, he is gone.

State of n.m hiring practices? I have no clue. Mcmc staff- nursing staff to be exact, good. The "c.n.a" types leave a little to be desired; yet I've witnessed that in literally every state in the United States. Again I only offer you my subjective opinion friend, not a comprehensive review of all aspects.

The Trinidad hospital is decent, although some of the capabilities at MCMC Raton are better (however, both hospitals lack cardiac cath labs and other specialists, like many community level hospitals) and I will concur on Clayton. Good hospital? Sure. If you want to make the drive; the drive over to Trinidad and Clayton can be extremely hazardous in winter conditions. Taos-Holy Cross is good, any hint of bad weather, no chance of making it there.

It's kind of rural and a little bit country there in Raton. Do the homework, which you are: pros and cons everywhere! Last place? I worked in ohio - crime galore. Now? California, excellent pay and crime with exorbitant expenditures.

It is what it is, I hope Raton works out for you. Ill retire there and have no problem forseeably with Rick Bayliss or the nurses at MCMC taking care of an older, greyer me.

By the way, through public records search you will see that the actual rate of "malpractice" in Raton is average, or even below average. I researched that quite a bit before going there. I understand your concern towards bias - yet I was skeptical myself of a smalltown hospital. I will not (never have, never will) take orders that aren't in a patients' best interests - paycheck be dammed.

What it boils down to is this (in my opinion): one part small town anecdote and legend and one part small hospital that grapples with the inability to manage severely acute cases. If you go to ANY hospital that isn't a designated cardiac facility for example, and you're having a heart attack you'll get the same treatment. Same goes for if a premature baby needs a neonatal nursery = hospital doesn't have it?= baby gets transferred.

Medicine is not miracles, it is a practice. I never personally witnessed any of the anecdotal, rumored, non fact-based crockery you may or may not hear of.

"PEOPLE DIE THERE" - that's what I have heard folks say about top notch, cutting edge, elite hospitals..... and MCMC too... and Trinidad's hospital... etc..

Doesn't mean they're bad. All just subjective opinions, stick to objective facts and it will work its self out in due time, alas, I step off my soap box.

Well, I will not dignify childish and insulting drivel with a response.

For the original poster; I hope you find your way and a place in Raton. It will find a place in your heart like it does for many, including myself.

Like I mentioned before, stick to objectivity and fact. Or you could base a limited opinion on those of an anonymous nurse and the 'professional' above and leave it there. Nonetheless, best luck on your endeavors, whatever brings you to Raton. And yes, the PA'S name is most likely Mark. I worked there some time ago, for a very short while.

I am done with this topic, as I will not engage in pointless arguments with other grown adults. We could all allegedly be "12 year olds" for all we know.

That is one thing that will never change: small town rumors. I grew up in a small town, although our worst rumor was that the kid who always won the 4H livestock competitions fed his animals steroids...

Look, rumors be dammed! The problem is that anyone in a position of authority will be slandered in some form or fashion. It is inevitable, now with the advent of these forums - and the anonymous internet troll, it is more acute.

Back to reality; I hope this lady is able to find what she needs. Don't pay attention to all the nonsensical (non fact based: see - made up, bs, etc) rumors. Folks just get bored in Raton I guess.

It just isn't true!! They also told me that at 'y2k' computers would fail and armageddon would come.... alas here we stand today.

Chicken little said the sky was falling too didn't he?

I totally agree with you there. MiMi Moore, is the most dispicable provider at Dr.Conders as well that I've ever seen in that area. I am from Clayton and I was getting tired of driving to Dumas all the time. My son has a prosthetic leg due to leukemia. My son was in a lot of pain, and I asked her to please hospitalize him because I was afraid to take him back in his condition. All she did was give him pain medication, and so I follwed her advice. By the time I got my child to the pharmacy, they were making remarks tat Ms.Moore had accused my son of being a drug abuser and would not give him his medication. Come on someone with cancer, is this lady crazy? My son doesn't yearn for anything other than to live his life as long as he can. It really offended me. We left the pharmacy with no medication, and I drove straight on out to Santa Fe. St Vincent was wonderful and immediately monitored pain management for my son. They could not believe what MS.Moore had said or done to keep my child from this painful and fatal illness since they are professionals in the cancer treatment area. It is a shame what type of person Ms.Moore is, and to spread malicious lies to the pharmacy. Does she have this right. First of all, she is not even a doctor, second of all what has happened to protect our HIPPA rights? Should she have not had my son sign a release before disclosing information to anyone?

This blog really intrigued me to the point I have to comment. First of all, Dr. bayliss's first name is Mark not Rick. Second, Dr. Conder in my opinion is not a decent doctor. She's rude to her patients. I use to work with a woman who was on a blood thinner. the woman took her medication every morning before my shift started. One day she took one too many blood thinners so i took her to her doc who was Conder and conder blamed me for her taking to much even after I told her she medicated before my shift. She wouldnt listen to me. THat is not a decent doctor. Instead of listening to me she disregared my comments and said it was my fault. MCMC is a different story. They are very unprofessional there. I took my son for a very important blood test one time and was told that particular test would take awhile to receive the results for. I said ok, will you call me when you get them. They said yes. Well two months went by and still no call. So I called and they had the results but didnt bother contacting me. They are lucky it wasnt a life or death situation or I'd own MCMC. Dr. Aragon, (despite his record) is ok in my opinion. He's my childrens doctor and we havent had a problem with him. Caruana is a quack if i ever saw one. He's also rude. Mark Bayliss is decent. I've heard good things and bad things about Zimly but i've never seen him. Just my thoughts.

Well I used to go to Conder when I lived in Raton. Hell my whole family went to her. I nor my family have ever had an issue with her. She is legit in my mind.

Wow Zimly is still there!?! That guy was hella weird. I went in to see Doc Conder and she was out so I got put in with this guy. I went in for a sore thought (which I got every year when school started) and Zimly gave me a physical, turn my head and cough y todo. If I went to Conder she knew right away and treated me, I think that guy has a thing for dudes lol.
