I think they should make the law to where you can not talk on a cell phone at all while driving. I know California is like that, and a couple other states. I think there would be alot less accidents.

Ban ALL calls unless hands-free. You will have to go back and do it anyway in a year.

Like smoke-free, you can be proactive NOW!

The phone-drivers, like the smokers, killed their own party by being unable to control behavior that harms others.

This is the problem with the Libertarian / No laws / No taxes folks. Everybody would be naked, driving an un-insured/un-registered car drinking a bourbon from a glass made of lard.

They should be banned while driving everywhere - so many near-crashes just because they are on the phone or texting on the freeway or anywhere else

how about banning cell phones along with Rachel Quintana, and her minute effort at making our roadways safer...We're in penny pinching times, we can't afford any "wild hair" ordinances! Ordinances that are definitely going to change to city wide enforcement in the coming months or years! THINK BEFORE YOU WASTE CITY COUNCIL TIME, ALONG WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS, Ms Quintana!

You are exactly right, Rey. Drivers are worse in El Paso than most anywhere else. Hell they can't even chew gum and drive. Should make it just like at Ft Bliss. Cannot use a phone while driving UNLESS you use a hands-free device. The only thing is, at Ft Bliss they actually enforce the Laws, whatever they are. Can't see a cell phone law being enforced in El Paso.

Sure why not ban cell phones . City leaders do what they want any way , They forget who pays their salary . They banned smoking with out a public vote . They spend money with out public vote , but name one thing that the council has done to make El Paso a better place to live . I can not !! more taxes , more benefits for them selves . Here is a great suggestion to help El Paso .. ban toilet paper . that way we could understand why El Paso is such a CRAPPY place to live ..

No brainer! WOW, this really takes any serious thought to come to this realization? It should have already been passed and it shouldn't just be school zones. How about NO use of cell phones while operating a moving vehicle in school hospital zones. There should be zero distractions while in a schoo or hospital zone. There should be a requirement for a hands free device while utilizing a cell phone and operating a moving vehicle otherwise. Oh and NOOOOOO text messaging while operating a moving vehicle. These are serious no brainers.

While on the subject of child safety, why do I see children in moving vehicles who are unrestrained or sitting on an adults lap. Let's enforce the laws that are currently in place to save childrens lives. I have ready too many stories about accidents where children are thrown from the vehicles and die, or die from injuries sustained because they weren't restrained.

Time to wake up. No need to be warm and fuzzy or politically correct when it comes to child safety.

Some of my "favorites" are brain-dead parents leting little kids out in the middle of the street in a school zone or how about this one. Leting little kids, babies ride in their laps while they are driving?? And especially in the school zones, U-turns, speeding, double parking. Not a cop in sight.

That is, by far, the biggest problem. Everytime I see someone doing something illegal while driving, there is never a cop around. Even if they did pass a law that would make driving and talking on a cell phone illegal, who would enforce it?

Get a bluetooth enabled phone, put the police on a speed dial key, so that you're not fumbling with the phone go through your address book, and give them a call with all of the pertinent information. That's what I've done several times when I saw unsafe drivers. One was a Nissan with New Mexico plates getting off work from the airport, driving East on Montana (which meant he was most likely breaking the law with not having proper tags too) who was texting for 8 miles straight, weaving slightly in the lane, slowing down, speeding up, paying more attention to his phone than the road in rush hour. Another was a crotch-rocket rider speeding down Montana, standing up on his bike, laying down on it, weaving in and out of traffic... and another was another rush hour driver on Montana, going WAY slower than the speed limit, because he and his buddies were blatantly drinking beer while driving. So, at a bare minimum, they know that they need to patrol Montana during rush hour far better. They don't, but at least I've done my civic duty and notified the police of unsafe / reckless behavior.

I'm with you on that issue "for the children". They should ban them on the highway, that's where most accidents happen because of cell phone use. They are starting to sound like the lady from the simpsons "will somebody think about the children"

BAN!!!!!!!!! Cell and Text messaging. We always wait till someone dies. I know there has been accidents involving distractions. Just look while you drive and count how many people are texting or on there cell, imagine if they hit or killed one your love ones....

The cross-guard at Edgemere Elementary has been using the cell as she goes out to stop traffic. This cell phone has been out-of-hand ! ISD should penalize right away.

Much more dangerous than cell phones are the beat up old shit boxes you see driving around el paso every day. A 20 year old car with bald tires and drum breaks poses a much greater hazard than a cell phone, so why don't we ban them. Or why don't we ban fast food to stop the kids from being such fat a$$es. Or why don't we ban running so kids don't skin their knees. At what point do all you nanny state losers think the government should stop interfering in a person's life?

Some of you sound like there were no crashes before the cell phone. Duh! Most of the cell phone users I have observed are the "children" themselves.

Wow... That's all I can say is, wow. It is going to take a little kid getting ran over, for this "cross-guard" to realize how unsafe she is being, and what's worse, is he/she probably doesn't even have kids, so why should he/she even care... Wow.

Old cars = Should have a valid, annual, safety inspection. The cars you're referring to would not, and would therefore be in violation of state law. Hence my arguement for not allowing Mexican cars to drive in the area. If they can't meet our laws, they shouldn't have the privilage of driving. That's how it is in Europe, and I don't see why it shouldn't be that way here.

Fatty foods = personal choice. The only person who's life is in danger because you choose to eat at a fast food restaurant three meals a day, is you. You don't risk anyone else's life, and, can easily go for a run, or do some other exercise to mitigate that risk.

Running / skinned knees = Not even remotely life threatening - yours or anyone else's.

Talking on cell phones has been found to be the same as driving drunk in numerous studies, and texting has been found to be even worse. This behavior places anyone on the roads at risk of serious bodily harm or death through no fault of their own. My family does not deserve to die for your self-proclaimed right to be an inconsiderate, reckless, arse.
