I don't know whose idea it was to switch from machine to live arm pitching in the girls 9-10 league, but I think we made a mistake. Was told it was to get them ready for the next phase and for travel ball...well not every player is going to play travel ball and not every player is going to be the next Jennie Finch The games are boring, the kids are not getting to field or hit (all we do is walk) no one is having fun playing. Its who ever has a good pitcher wins the game. I was told this was announced at the coaches meeting 1 week prior to practice starting, why didn't they make the announcement at the end of last yr. The weather prevented many practices and these poor girls are trying their best to pitch. Although you do have 1 or 2 that have had coaching from a pitching coach ($$$$) and that will be the teams to win it all.

Some of these kids will move up next year to 11-12 yr old and need the experience of playing fast pitch becuase they will also move in to middle school ball. Kids can start as early as 6th grade in middle school.
I understand what you're saying, my girls both played off the pitching machine. But the transition to fast pitch was difficult because the pitching machine throws a slower pitch and the machine is more accurate than a live pitcher. Starting fast pitch now helps them develope skills such as watching and timing the pitch so they are better prepared once they move up in age. Also most of the counties/cities around are playing fast pitch at 9/10 and they're kids move to the next level a little easier.
I hope your child's team will have a fun season and I'm sure they will gain a lot of skill.

I'm glad the rec made the move. I have a daughter playing in the 11-12 yrld and I can tell she's a step behind because of not facing a live pitcher until this year. Yes I admit games get a little boring at times, but rec ball is a learning process and I enjoy watching the kids improve and grow in there skills.
