Nothing like strong building standards will ever happen in Florida, though. After Andrew, when Dade county started adopting stronger standards and other counties tried, the building industry fought it. Lobbied the Legislature and got most of the standards rolled back except in Miami-Dade.
And then there's this other thing. To make sure that the standards are actually used, you have to have building inspectors. Right now, inspectors get paid based on fees that are paid for permits, so they are being laid off. No way to keep them on since property tax cuts mean lots of staff will be laid off. When building starts up again, there won't be enough experienced people on staff to make sure codes are followed.
Well, people said they wanted lower taxes. You get what you pay for.
