MOBILE, Ala.(AP)- The owners of a Mobile apartment complex, Warren Properties, Inc. of Rancho Santa Fe, CA must pay $1.25 million to settle a personal housing discrimination lawsuit, the largest sized penalty in the history of the United States.
The agreement filed in Federal Court on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 and demands the owners of the Warren Village Apartments to shell out $1.19 million to former tenant Jeremiah Stadtlander plus an additional $55,000 in expenditures to the U.S. government.
Prosecutors said the owners - Warren Properties Inc., Warren Village Limited Partnership - Frank Warren of Santa Fe, CA - violated the law by refusing to allow Stadtlander, a handicapped individual who was able to walk only with the use of leg braces and arm band crutches, to move to a first-floor, handicap accessible apartment. Stadtlander fell down the stairs that led to his apt. and shattered his hip and is now confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
