I can relate to that directly in that I was firmly against gays marrying about 4 years ago or less.
What I made through self discovery is that instead of countering a valid point made by "the other side" of gay marriage such as the ever present question of where is the harm in homosexual unions I would in turn scramble to find either an isolated incident of harm which I attempted to expand on or swerve around the direct question or point fielded to me and tried to craft another point either from it or something unrelated altogether as a form of derailment.
It was at the point where I actually reflected on the individual points made thanks in part to a gay who stayed polite even given my caustic nature that I saw how gays marrying was a righteous cause.
I bowed my head, had to say "I'm sorry" twice given the room couldn't hear me the first time and came back.
As a supporter FOR gays marrying. Hellova lot easier to argue that than it is to fight an onslaught of factual information bombarding your windshield...LOL!!!
What separates me from other gay supporters in these goofy threads is I don't really LIKE gay marriage either. It makes me shift in my seat. But hell...half my being might make another person have to fight to keep their lunch down so there you go.
LOL!!!!
I feel you, Dan. I was the same way. I hated the idea of gays getting married. Then my sister, who is a lawyer adept at convincing people, and I had an argument about gay marriage. After it was over, it started sinking in and I started changing my view. How does it affect me if they get married? It doesn't. They are no less human than anybody else here and they deserve equal respect. My work is somewhat fashionable, so I work with a lot of gays now. They are funny dudes. I respect them as much as I do anybody else. Maybe a little more, because they are so friendly and nice. Better to talk to than the stuck-up women at my work. I guess my dislike came from not understanding them. I have nothing against them now.

In reality I believe that the answer to the question about how children fare in a same sex family as opposed to a opposite sex family is really quite simple! If there are good caring parents in each of those family's the children will turn out as well balanced, adjusted and compassionate as they would in any good family, the sexual makeup of said family's really has nothing to do with it! I personally know a few same sex couples with children and you couldn't find any better well adjusted children anywhere! Like I said,it's quite simple in my opinion.
Please...spare me. Gag me with a spoon.

Several of us have wondered why it is that Kimare is SO vehemently opposed to homosexuality. And I think we've come up with a couple of possibilities.
1.) He just plain hates homosexuals. And specifically, he doesn't like homosexual men. His arguments rarely have anything to do with lesbians.
Now, he claims to not hate homosexuals. But he doesn't support homosexuality in any way. He doesn't want us to marry. He doesn't want us to have children. He refers to us as unnatural and sexually disordered. He believes that we should be "cured" into oblivion.
I'm not trying to make him look bad. These are beliefs and values that he has clearly stated in the years that I have watched him on TOPIX.
2. The second possibility is that he is one of those pitiable, closeted, self-loathing gay or bisexual creatures who believe they can throw everyone off their scent by being really, really outspoken against the LGBT community.
There are studies that have been completed that shows this to be the case. One such study measured a group of men's level of "homophobia". Those men who scored highest were then attached to a device that measures penile circumference and shown a series of pornographic movies and pictures.
Most of these men "responded" to homosexual erotica.
Freud called it "reaction formation". A person formulates a reaction in order to hide what they consider to be anxiety producing or unacceptable feelings.
I'm of the opinion that Kimare may fall into this category.
Some people say that I'm insulting Kimare by suggesting that he is closeted. But how can it be insulting for a gay man to suggest that another man is gay?
I believe he has frequented this forum (and many more) in an effort to quench his desire to at least be in the vicinity of other gay people. As I've described it to him, we are essentially a "virtual gay bar".
I think if he truly disliked gay people to the extent that he wishes we believed, he would have come here three years ago, made his comments, and then left. And that's what many people who hold anti-homosexual sentiment have done over the years. They're here for a month or two, then they move on.
But he's a fixture here. He's kind of like Norm from "Cheers".
We obviously meet some need of his that goes unfulfilled in his day-to-day life.
I have heard of the second point before. We used to joke about my friend being in this category, because he was so antigay. I mean, when I was trying to figure out kimare's reasons, it seemed to go around in circles with his failed mating mantra. Good point. Will revert back with my analysis shortly.

By that reasoning how would plural marriage affect you or me? Or a marriage of siblings? If the only deciding factor is "it doesn't affect me", then any number of consenting adult relationships could be designated "marriage". What then is the point of recognizing it at all then, if marriage means anything and everything?

Heck - you remember don't you.
When I went as "Denver Dan" only to piss off over half the gay community in TOPIX.
The late 'Golem' and me would go rounds and I would call him the 'Gay Genie' given his bald cross armed Mr. Clean stature in his pic.
LOL!!!
I was worse than KiKrazy trust me. Most of mine though fell into smartass comments against the gay community.
I cannot remember the one who kept up with me but who was so polite as to make me actually think but between him and giving it all some thought is when I realized gays should be allowed to be married nationwide and this stupid conflict should settle down like a long past dust storm into same sex marriage as a non-issue.
And my journey was much like yours Dan,it just took place a few years before you, especially after meeting and getting to know gay folk through the course of my job! There are good and bad with every human being but the majority of us heteros like the majority of gays are good decent people!Carry on!

You're putting words into my mouth. It does not affect me, therefore, I am not partaking in ridiculous debates against it. Live and let live.

Honestly, if siblings want to marry, so be it. It happens anyways. It is illegal, however, because of the clear health problems that can be passed down to the child through incestuous intercourse. There are no such threats in gay marriage.

I feel you are arguing from this conservative, "the sacred definition of marriage" bullshit that is getting old. Times change--get over it.

Right on.
I had some ugly things I partook in my past. Purposely searched out gay bars to beat up gays in my early 20's back in 1982 -'84. Howled at Sam Kineson's gay jokes. Etc. Looking back all I see is a waste of time and I did get a chance to hear that same joke track 2 years ago only to think the jokes on homosexuals fell flat.
I don't interact with gays albeit I know a few. Nowadays I really don't discern the difference or care to. I give a shit less is John is holding Ted's hand at Sunday morning's farmers market and the like.
I wish you could convey to these gay bashers and those seriously opposed to gays marrying what a complete waste of time and effort it is. Crap....saving the endangered Mongolian earthworm holds more value than getting all twisted about someone elses personal life because they happen to be gay.
I agree. What they do in the bedroom is their business. Wouldn't it make the active haters gay for being so interested in gay peoples affairs? Gayception?

I was born in 88, so by the time I was in high school, gays were somewhat accepted. At least in southern california where I grew up. I mean, we used to make fun of them a lot, but quickly died out by college.
