Moving to Raleigh

Hi my wife and I are moving to Raleigh October 1st.
We have been living in New York for 10 years but are tired
of the rat race and b......t that comes with it!!
We have researched Raleigh and it ticks all the right boxes for us, great people, great climate, fantastic neighborhoods and fastest growing city in the country.
We are renting a house in Wake Forest and then we will hopefully buy in an area we like.
I have my own construction company in New York and I am trying to network with as many people in Raleigh as possible so I can hopefully start a company here.
I've heard people say carpenters are in demand etc.
Any suggestions or words of advice?

Raleigh is turning into Florida! It sucks here now..Too many transients , no jobs, scam artists...drs suck here too, good luck finding a good one. Schools are overpopulated, under employed....oh and forget proper English...slang, ghetto, so southern I get confused when I get asked a question and overtaxed. Have a nice day.

This area is a great area to have your own construction company. My first question to you would be, do you have a specialty or a niche? With the struggles of the country as a whole it is not quite the same here within the Triangle. Jobs are still out there and companies are still growing. Real estate is picking up and with the areas low inventory of homes this area is on the verge of a shift from buyers market to a sellers market. That said, there are a lot of small to large construction companies out there to compete with, but having dealt with several it is safe to say that if your business is built around strong customer service it will strive in this area. Everyone is looking for someone to fix, build, or update something of theirs. I would be glad to point you in the right direction and introduce you to people that may be able to help you out.

Thank you Happy to help. I specialize in custom carpentry. Custom entertainment centers, closets, pantries, storage etc. I also work with crown moulding, trim ,baseboard, kitchens, bathrooms. As a North Carolina native (Eastern NC), I relocated to Raleigh for school (NC STATE). Though Raleigh has tremendously grown, as a 31yr old male, I'm bored out of my MIND! Raleigh is SOOO Overrated! Cary is a mess of hype for no reason, and to the Realtor that said, "There's ### amount of jobs)..yeah, in customer service (and they pay $10 an hr) I have a degree in Finance, and there's no HOPE! I plan on moving OUT of the state to DC ASAP!!! I currently work as a hotel AGM, and the pay sucks! There's no culture, not enough events, and downtown Raleigh is just plain boring! It's seems like Raleigh is scared to go outside of the box to entertain it's newcomers. Durham has a bad reputation, BUT I actually like it a lot better than Raleigh. Better restaurants, better night life, better social scene. All you "Yelpers" check out "Dames Chicken & Waffles). If you plan on raising a family, it's ok..The school's are diverse (the Board of education is all over the news right now for zoning issues... stupid)...google it. Every weekend at the hotel, we have around 5 families moving here from the North & South, but they've been bamboozled by the hype and the realtors! Do your research before you come! Pay more for a better quality of living..RALEIGH'S NOT WORTH IT! Oh, and for the Gay folks, the clubs are Tired hunny!

Unless you put your clothing store in Crabtree Mall or South Point mall...it's a loss....Even though there are a lot of shopping districts, people here are small minded and will only shop at the malls. ALSO!! FROM "THEWHOLETRUTH"...EV ERYBODY THAT'S MOVING HERE....are moving to Holly Springs, Apex, and Fuquay Varina. Raleigh's not even in the picture. What the realtors are NOT telling you is that they are positioning you further than they're telling you. Yeah, there's a lot of new "Modular" homes in those areas, but to get to any civilization, you'll have to drive to Raleigh (which is 2o-30mins). ALSO!!! US1 South is your ONLY entrance & exit to Cary, Apex, Holly Springs & Fuquay!! Traffic IS TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE! Dont let the small town theme fool you! People complain ALL the time about traffic here. If you dont know the back roads..forget it! You're going to need a whole bottle of wine by the time you get home to ease your nerves from the Horrible drivers here. Brier Creek area: It WAS popular...it's ran down now, they have a freaking WAL-Mart in the middle of the community! Raleigh is a big college town, with college student jobs. If you're planning to work in RTP, Durham would best fit. If youre looking to live on the outskirts of a nice city but get the southern/country lifestyle..Go to Charlotte..And THAT's Foreal!!

WHOAAA, Charlotte is defiantly not the place to go, especially to raise a family. Not sure what the whold truth person is talking about. Just search the crime in Charlotte, outrageous taxes and just as many problems with the school systems. Traffic is worse and the roads are in horrible condition.( WSOCTV.COM ) look at the news a few days. The only thing Charlotte has thats better is the uptown area, yes its called uptown there not downtown and it trully is nicer than Raleigh. I lived there for 12 years and am glad to be away from there. As a whole, the Raleigh/Cary area offers a better quality of life for families.

Because of a job transfer we are moving to the Raleigh area. We have kids in high, middle, elementary schools. We live in Georgia now. We prefer to be north of Raleigh in smaller schools. We want to live in the country or in a subdivision with large lots. Any suggestions of areas to look into? The school system is confusing to me!

People can move where they want. It's a free country. But I understand why some are slightly irritated with the constant Northern influx. It's a little tiring. The south has a unique culture, which is slowly being degraded. Mind you, there are plenty of southern rednecks who I'd love to see leave, but there is a certain aspect of southern culture that northerners lack.

I've been to New York and is it is filled with some of the rudest, most aggressive people I've met. Not everyone, but there are quite a few. As a southern man, I hold doors for women, I don't drive like a maniac, i dont live my life in the fast lane as if I'm always going to the fire.

Too many Northeasterners (not necessarily Mid-westerners), are changing the pace and the culture of the south...for the worse. They push their way into grocery stores, cut in line, steal parking spots, and are constantly moving at a break neck pace as if it's their last day on earth. They've completely taken over Cary.

They've also completely overrun the schools and the roads. Raleigh can't build them fast enough and Raleigh has to keep building them to keep up with the Northern invasion.

I know this post sounds bad, but it's not meant to be.

After reading these comments and opinions, it's really making me want to think more seriously about relocating to NC! I have family in Miss, LA and Tennessee but that is just a little too far south for me, and like someone else said, I am just sick of the Northeast weather..the cold is getting old! I'll be moving and looking for work as a CNA, however, and was surprised at the salary level for that position - seems quite a bit lower than the N.E. Just talking outloud here...also, I'm 30 and single. Thoughts, opinions?

Moving to anywhere in the Triangle is wonderful, long summers, long falls, great people.
There are more expensive areas, like any city or town......however moving from New Jersey, with your taxes, I don't think you will find it 'expensive' Check out Wake County schools websitewww.wcpss.net/ or reportcard.com for schools.
