RUPERT (WVVA)- The owner of farms in Greenbrier and Raleigh counties was arrested Thursday after more than 30 horses were found dead in the two locations.

According to Sheriff Jim Childers, at least 26 dead horses were found at the Greenbrier County site owned by Grady Whitlock after sheriff's deputies and animal control officers were called to the scene Wednesday. At least five more horses were found at a separate Raleigh County location Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say between 85-120 horses lived at the Greenbrier property. Around half of the living horses are severely malnourished.

Animal control officers say it's difficult to determine how long the horses have been dead because of the weather conditions. The horses may have been dead for days or weeks. Authorities are trying to determine the best way to remove the dead horses from the property.

The sheriff's department is currently obtaining warrants to remove the living horses from the property.

does he not check his property... if he owns all these animals does he not ever check on them himself.. granted if he pays someone to do the job they should be doing it, but bottom line is that they belong to him and its up to him to ensure that they are being cared for

Horses are property. If you start locking up all of those who are guilty of property neglect then the jails in WV would be full. Animals don't have rights!

I agree. Obviously he didn't care about them if he never personally checked on them.

A man is innocent until proven guilty. It is not like Grady Whitlock to neglect any animals. His family has long been horseman. I find it hard to believe that he is guilty of neglect or abuse to these animals.

Hats off to Sheriff Childers for enforcing the meager animal welfare laws on WV's books.

From the Register-Herald:
"This is not the first time complaints have been made about conditions at Whitlock’s Shawver’s Crossing farm. In January 2006, The Register-Herald reported animal control officers were investigating a situation involving 60 miniature horses that were allegedly being neglected at the farm. Many of those animals were also pregnant at the time.

Whitlock denied owning those horses.

That incident was resolved when the unidentified owner of the animals was pressured under threat of legal action to move them out of the marshy area where they had been kept."

Sorry, Grady-defenders, history keeps repeating itself. There is definitely a problem. Maybe it's time for him to stop having animals if he's not going to care for them himself.

Just because "his family has long been horseman" doesn't mean that they have provided equally good care for all of their horses.

Many "horsemen" hold NotRight's views, who seems to think it's alright to starve his "property."

And to you, NotRight: "Horses are property. If you start locking up all of those who are guilty of property neglect then the jails in WV would be full. Animals don't have rights! "

When "property" is a living creature, it is NOT O.K. to abuse or neglect it. Whether it's a dog, cat, horse, cow, fowl, or any other creature bred or kept for man's convenience, use or entertainment, there is a level of RESPONSIBILITY involved to provide a certain level of stewardship.

It might not be such a bad idea to jail the property neglect criminals you describe. It is statistically proven that people who abuse animals are likely to abuse their spouses, children, or elderly.

Wonder how many charges of animal abuse...uh, property neglect... YOU could be charged with?

He pays 1 person to care for 5 farms with 100's of animals...and he DOES check on them...he just don't care about their condition...I personaly have tried to save several animals from yet another farm...one in Fayetteville, with 2 of the 4 dying in my arms and I have also contacted Animal Control in Fayette County many times! They just tell him to buy some hay and they turn a blind eye...He is at fault for this, but so are authorities who have let it get this bad!!

How do you know that there is ONLY "1 person to care for 5 farms"??? Are you his payroll clerk?? Do you personally work for him knowing each and every employee???

I didn't think so! Because if you were, which we know you are NOT, then you would know that there is indeed more than "1 person to care for 5 farms". No sense in lying!!!

Good grief, when are the horse lovers going to put a stop to this? This man is old and has no busness trying to raise horses at his age- to starve them to death. put him in a nursing home and foster the horses out and sell his farms to feed the animals. Apparently he has dementa or he would remember how many he actually owns.
I believe that God created every living, breathing thing and there is a place in heaven for all, but some are going straight to Hell and will be begging for a drink of water, which they will not get!!!

I was feeding those horses last year from the road the care taker came out and talked to me very badly. The care taker told me to leave or he would call the law,I told him I was calling for him and also called the animal control I was told by animal control he had been reported several times and they were taking care of it.I guess this is what they call taking CARE of it!!!!!!

I couldn't agree more! But I also believe the person or persons that took the job of care taker should also be charged same as Grady and possibly more so.If a person took a job to care for someone in there home that was helpless as those horses and did the same thing to them as the care takers did to those horse's they wouldn't go after the person or persons that hired them!

If the system would have taken action and did what it should have after the first incident we wouldn't be debating this matter!!!! And those horses would have had a chance. The so called LAWS in this great country we live in for the protection of animals is same as non-existent and we call ourselves civil human beings? Shame on the law makers of this country for looking the other way!!
And shame on all of us for not standing up letting the law makers know this is a priority for us. As long as we know this is going on in this country,(AND WE DO) and choose not to take a stand for helpless creatures like those horses, in ways we are just as guilty as Grady and his sorry excuse for care takers!
If someone knows the name or names of the so call care takers you need to get a back bone and spread the names! God have mercy on all the suffering animals and the people who choose to look the other way!!! Me included.

Good for you that stopped and fed and evently got run off! We would have did the same thing, actually I would have waited on the Law Inforcement to show up> I always carry a camera, nothing like proof with it in hand.
Just remember that God loves all creatures, but it's in Mans hand to take care of those creatures.
