Assuming she designated her wife as the beneficiary, she'll get the SGLI payment (life insurance) and any unpaid pay/allowances due, but nothing else.

Most significantly, her wife will NOT get the $100,000 death gratuity. Because of DOMA her wife is NOT eligible to receive that; it will instead go to her parents or siblings.

Yet another reason DOMA will be overturned by the courts.

Some website just predicted last week that a married service member would be killed and their spouse denied benefits because of DOMA. Prophetic?

This war started when we are attacked by al-Qaeda on 9-11. I lost a family member in the destruction of The World Trade Center. Dennis Scauso, whom I knew from 1966 when he was 10 years old to 9-11-01 when he was 46 years old.

He was a New York City Fireman with HazMat-1. His human remains were never found. He leaves a wife and 4 children.(He would have been a grandfather last year).

I said at the time of these attacks, that this war was absolutely necessery, that it would last for 40 to 50 years, or more, and that there is NO WAY that we can afford to lose.

I don't care if we have troops in Afghanistan and elsewhere fighting al-Qaeda and it's affilliates for the next 50 - 60 years or more.

Now tho those of you who may object to fighting this lenght of time, let me remind you that we have had American military forces in Italy since 1943, in Germany since 1945, in Japan since 1945, and in South Korea since 1945 (Korea was occupied militarily by Japan at that time).

Now that's over 65 years, that we have had military fprces in those countries, and the American military forces in South Korea actively patrol teh DMZ and are prepared to fight a war with North Korea at a moment's notice.

And I don' hear any Americans, or any of you, complaining about American military forces being in those countries for 65 years.

The war against al-Qaeda MUST BE WON no matter HOW LONG IT TAKES.

If we retreat from this war against al-Qaeda, then the 3000 Americans killed on 9-11 and the 2000 Americans killed in Afghanistan since the war bega, their deaths will have been in vain.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans were killed in World War I and World War II. we can certainly win this war against al-Qaeda, even if it takes 50 years or more, IF we have the will to do so.

Retreating form this war will show that we are weak, al-Qaeda will take advantage of that and attack us again, and the next time may be even worse if they are able to get chemical, biological or nuclear weapons.

This is a fight we CANNOT afford to retreat from, or lose UNDER ANY CONDITIONS.

Try telling that to a Red Army veteran of their Afghan war! The Soviets could not produce order in that country and neither will the US armed forces. Even Alexander the Great gave up on the region that eventually became Afghanistan. And remember that the Al-Qaeda folks who bombed the WTC were not Afghan. I don't object to the war in Afghanistan for political reasons, as there truly is evil afoot there, but I just do not think it is winnable.

My belief is that it is a moot point. I strongly believe WWIII will occur sometime during the middle or latter part of this century and will be a Muslim vs. non-Muslim war. I also believe the cause may be either Israeli aggression towards Iran or rising sea levels causing massive flooding in Bangladesh resulting in millions of Bangladeshis overrunning India and a resulting Hindu-Muslim conflict that will put in allied countries in the same manner as WWI. The increasing radical Muslim population in Europe combined with the racism of the European right will also factor and I think Eurasia will once again be the main battleground. Most likely it will see the decline of America as a superpower even if the non-Muslim forces win, just as the heavy casualties of WWII saw the decline of Britain as a superpower. I also believe Latin America will once again be largely uninvolved and because of this, Brazil may become the major world power in the 22nd century, possibly along with China and India.
