ripped off

Louisville, KY

#1 Oct 30, 2010
I placed a large order with Apple bee's this friday in the amount of 122.49. Noticed when i got back to figure everyone's bill that 17.33 was added to the bill for some kind of gratuity fee. Now mind you, this was a carry out order-did NOT eat inside.(which i could understand the fee)So I called and questioned the fee and the chick was rude and asked me if i was taking money out of her pocket. I said YES...duh, she took it out of mine! Then she said to come and get it and hung up. Now if I was being rude-i can deal with the aftermath but I wasn't, I was asking a question. so i went back later after work and talked to the manager....well he made excuses and wouldn't even look me in the eye. Really? Then his last words were Have a nice day. I never complain but this time I did.
I'm tired of working only to be ripped off and then be made to seem like I should have to pay for someone to wrap up my food! Really!!! I'm in the wrong business-I need to start wrapping up orders and walking 15 steps to a car and charging them ridiculous fees to do it. Heck we are all in the wrong business!!! I'm writing everyone and telling everyone this story, it's appalling to find out a fee will be charged to you for a carry out order.
And for the girl to act like a victim when i question her? Isn't that your job? I don't charge a fee for how many questions my customers ask in a visit-It's ludicrous!!! And wrong...I never as a server expected a cent from a carry out order-that would have just been a bonus. And who that values their money would pay someone 17.33 to pack up there order and you still have to drive and get it? Come on! Does anyone know the owner to the Applebee's in Radcliff?

I wouldn't have left the store till that charge was taken off. Call the corporate office and complain. I have had numerous problems with AppleBees and will not eat there anymore.

As a waitress, even to go orders have to be put togther and make sure everything is there, now almost all your to go orders at all places are going to have a to go charge, except of course your fast food places...Just in case people dont know. Waitress only make $2.13 an hour. So if we dont get a tip we make no money..
I am not trying to start any shit with anyone, but alot of people dont know that waitressing is a hard job and we put up with alot of shit.
But I still wouldnt give it up, cause there are some nice people still out there. I enjoy meeting people and talking to them, but when you get people that want to bitch about everything and run your ass off and then dont leave you a tip, Well those are the kind of people i tell that KARMA A BITCH....
thanks all I have to say on that subject...

The point isn't about leaving a tip its about an unwanted charge. If a person doesn't want to leave a tip that's their business. Yes that makes them a jerk but its not right to decide for a customer.

you sound like one of those people who constantly complain about everything. did you ever stop to think this girl works on tips? i have worked for applebees before in the past and i know that carside has to get the orders together, its not made and bagged for them. so not only did you complain to the manager and got your money back you still want to trash her on here. sounds like you want her to lose her job too and that makes you a pathetic human being. get over it and move on. if you dont like to eat there or the service go elsewhere. you sound like a non tipper anyway. so for her to lose you as a customer would be a good thing.

Well, I can understand that people who work for tips deserve to be treated fairly and given good tips, but it is totally not right for them to feel entitled to money that they did not earn. I don't care if they have to get the food together and bag it: it definitely wasn't worth $17.00!!

it was put on there because she did deserve it. the 17.00 was a 15% tip. and it seems the lady didnt want to give her nothing. this "chick" probaly has kids to take care of and expenses that we all have to put out. for the lady not to leave her nothing is a shame.

did you end up leaving the server who delivered your order to your car a tip before you realized they charged you a gratuity?

Costumer, GREAT Question. Also, was the order broken down into "So many" mini orders to where it was like a party of 8 or something. Most restaurants have a thing where if the party is a certain size a gratuity is automatically added. I have used the curbside service at this particular Applebees many times and have never had an issue, and the girls are always very nice, friendly and professional. I always tip them because I know how they have to go back to the kitchen and when the main course is done then they take it and put everything else with it. They are in and out of that store rain or shine time and time again. They will always get a nice tip from me. Hell, on Veterans day 3 of us went and got our "FREE" meal and did not hesitate to leave our waitress a $20 tip. Those waiters and waitresses were really busting their butts that day and I know for a fact some folks didn't even leave a tip because they joked "The meal was free". Seems we have a bunch of Morons around us here in HC. Nuff said, now I'm hungry and think I will call Applebees for a nice "Take Home" Meal.

Bottom line is Applebee's should not have a waitress preparing these to go orders. Waitresses work off tips so they should stick to waiting tables. People who place a togo order do not get service from a waitress hence they should not have to tip a waitress. My suggestion is that the salaried managers prepare the to go orders and let these waitresses do their real job! Which is WAIT TABLES.

I have had many problems with Applebee's, too! I will not be back! I had a 50 dollar gift card once. My food came up to 32 dollars. I left the tip with my cash. Next time I went, there was no money on my card. The manager wouldn't do anything about it, so I called the main office and they gave me my money back!

Radcliff Angel, why don't you get a real job? Sounds like you're a loser who is going to wait tables the rest of your life. Tips are for waitresses who do their job...bring you refills, sauces, clean up your plates. Not to bring you your food. I'm pretty sure all fast food places bring you your food to the counter...they don't get tips! Bringing food to the car doesn't require a tip.

yes a waitress makes 2 something an hour, HOWEVER if they average out her tips vs. hours worked, if it doesn't equal minimum wage (7.25) they put the difference on the paycheck. but if your tips aren't averaging minimum wage you must be doing a poor job, or maybe got a crap shift. maybe.

As a former waitress, I can tell you, you are wrong. Tipping is optional and is dependent on good service, bagging food does not constitute good service. And for a company to allow tips to be added onto a bill without the customers consent should be viewed as theft. I believe it is good manners to tip and everyone should do it, but if a charge was added to my bill without my permission, I would do the same as this lady.

My experience from working as a bartender at Applebee's, several years ago while I was in college, is the To Go/ Carry out server always made more than the servers/bartenders. While this is no excuse to NOT tip the Carry Out Server,$17 is a little steep for a carry out order. If there is a gratuity added to carry outs the customer should be informed when placing the order so they can be prepared.

My personal opinion (not that anyone asked but here goes): The Applebee's in radcliff is one of the worst I have ever been to. Service and quality of food is hit or miss like most places in this area. I believe this would change if there was more competition. In regards to this lady's complaint, I would have done the same thing. I ALWAYS tip good service, regardless if its carryout or to my table but the carryout tip is always less. The tip is less because the carry out server does not refill my drink, bring extra napkins, remove my plates, or clean my table when I get home to eat my meal.

Also, there is never a reason for a person in a customer service position to be rude, even when the customer is rude(not saying this lady was). Remember 2 wrongs don't make a right.

You know, another word for tip is gratuity. Which by definition, simply broken down means that I will give you this money because I feel like it. It's my money.

A tip is not guaranteed. "Working for tips" means you earn your base wage and smile and cajole your ass off to earn more. A tip is not something you are entitled to, it is something you earn.

If you take a phone order and wrap the food up and *gasp* walk it to a car that does not mean you are entitled to 15 percent of the bill. If one wants to or NEEDS to work in customer service, then here's the hard truth: You work on the whim of the customer. If they don't want to tip you, they DON'T HAVE TO. Not even by polite standards. Your are in the service business.

Offer up better service, or get that degree from Daymar you've been thinking about. Whine to your mother.
