Digital billboards in Los Angelers have become our worst nightmare. The ever changing messages are a distraction to drivers, they illuminate our neighborhoods at night, and they consume a huge amount of electrical energy as they are lit up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Now is the time to stop them before they ruin your environment as they did ours.

We are always comparing ourselves to Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Ft. Worth. They have limited billboards for years. Don't let the Chamber pressure the Mayor to veto the bill. We want to compete with the "big cities' and we can't if we don't get rid of the clutter.

Ask yourselves why the mayor "negotiated" the WEAKEST digital billboard sign rules in the ENTIRE state.

When you say this was a compromise--between who? Looks like the people who broke the law got EVERYTHING they wanted in the end.

It's obvious that the mayor doesn't give a rip about how El Paso looks to outsiders. I mean, look at the place! "Keep El Paso beautiful," my rusty butt. How about MAKE El Paso beautiful. Does the mayor not realize--nor care--that El Paso is regarded by most of the country as just an ugly place to drive through on I-10 on the way to LA? If you don't believe me, just ride by his house at 3224 Mesa Verde. There's a phone booth on the front porch for christ sake and a wagon load of dead limbs. His place is in this pretty neighborhood but looks like it belongs in the Segundo Barrio. He ought to be ashamed. Somebody's lining his pocketbook, bet your bottom dollar.

is saving us from lies from staff. It was an embarrassment for El Paso. I thought they all had to take a oath for office including ethics??? Ann this would not be a legacy for you Major Cook has been working on this since 2002. Thank you Major.

June get your facts and do not join the lies of City Staff. They were already trouble for the miscalculations and the pictures. El Paso loves the business due to loss manufacturing in El Paso. If you want to be Green stop your newspaper, so they stop cutting trees for newspaper.

Besides being hideous, billboards--digital and otherwise--anywhere besides the open road, way out in the country, are a distraction. Especially along I-10 as it courses through El Paso, they should be removed altogether. The glitzy, flashing digital ones are the worst of all. The driving habits of so many on that road are terrible, some of the worst I've seen anywhere. Cut out the distractions of the billboards and maybe the driving will improve. The appearance of the city certainly will.

The hideous behavior, by the city staff in presenting exaggerated figures and manipulated photos to sway the vote, is what you should be concerned with and ashamed of.

That message, no matter, how hard they try to bury the city council meeting tape, will resonate forever of the corruption in this city.

To clean up the city, start with city hall and then work on the signs.

Had I known what I know now, I would not have voted for John Cook for a second term. Definitely not.

Ms. lilley gave a blistering speech attacking the mayor, stating that she is being disrespected by the veto, the basis for approval is that it took 18 months for the study and that the mayor is manipulated by Clear channel. She also claims the majority of the public speakers, two weeks ago, agreed with her.

Ms. lilley, how about the disrespect YOU showed by lying about the number of complains received by your office. Your plans for a legacy. And your claims of massive support is only making you nose grow bigger everytime you opened your mouth today.

Let's re-broadcast the city council meeting from two weeks ago, totally unedited and let the public decide about the disrespect and YOUR facts.

Why would the mayor veto the council's vote on billboards? Has anyone driven through a city and thought "What a fabulous place! I love their billboards."?
El Paso has much going for it. Adding billboards--especially digital ones--detracts from the city's appeal. Only billboards companies and those who lease to them have anything to gain.

I would hope he vetoed the bill because he knew that the public SAW and recognized the manufactured study with it's manipulated photos and exaggerated figures presented by the city staff. It's all on film, but the routine re-broadcast of the council meeting was never done.

He took the safe route which was to offer a compromise.

Regardless of what happened at or since the council meeting, the fact remains: The overuse of billboards along I-10 from one end of El Paso to the other are ugly and they contributed to the already-awful driving habits that plague our city. They are the among the ugliest things about this otherwise beautiful city, right up there with Asarco, which also needs to be razed and turned into a park.

I too agree that Ms Lilly's comment against Mayor Cook were uncalled for and in very poor taste. This could have been done in private. Your childish behavior will be remembered for some time. If you want to build a legacy with this billboard ordinance work with everyone who will be affected by it not just the ones who oppose them. A compromise can be reached and that should be your goal. By the way, you better get it done in this term since it will probably be your last. If the people in your district continue to vote for you then they deserve what they get. Ms Byrd, at least you were a little less obnoxious this time. Get to work guys. Figure this out for everybodies benefit.

i think anne has fifthed that a few times. as in a fifth of whisky before council meetings. she falls asleep and then all of a sudden "i second that". she even fell asleep one time and voted for the stormwater to be sent back to the city and then susie had to ask for a re-vote so anne could change her vote. she is a disgrace to the west side.
