Sides weighed on methadone use by drivers

An effort to bar people who take methadone from driving kicked up a dispute at the state Capitol last week as legislators weighed the arguments of young women hurt in a car crash by an impaired driver against medical professionals who said methadone is safe.

Wow, jeez that is nuts. Clinic wouldnt be able to operate if people couldnt drive to them, period.

But, I have read a study that said car fatalities were very common amoung MMT patients, they did a study of 220 random people on methadone, and 220 random people NOT on methadone.

The results were that 17 MMT patients had been in an accident where somebody had died (Fatal accident). And 0 of the randomly selected 220 people NOT on methadone were in fatalities.

I couldnt believe that, But people on MMT are USUALLY poly substance abusers that take more than just methadone, what is too say they didnt drink with their methadone or take benzo's with it.

That law is insane, and I dont think it will ever pass. some people drive an HOUR each way or MORE to get to their clinic. Mine take about 20-25 mins each way in a car.

Wow, it says that she wasnt just on Methadone when she got into the crash. She was on Methadone and "Other Drugs".... I wonder what they were? because if it was xanax or a benzo they might as well be drinking and driving. Also, Is this for clinic only patients OR EVERYBODY on methadone? What about pain patients? They cant drive cause they take methadone? That would be crazy.

Somebody in the article says "Methadone should be illegal for people who abuse it". Well who is she too say who abuses it and who isint? How does she know they dont just have a high tolerance?(And YES, Some people are on doses that are NUTS)

If people take their medications properly and are STABLE on them then I dont feel driving should be an issue. But if abusing them and getting high on other things such as alcohol and benzo's then there should be punishment.

I think good was done in this case. It excludes the users who are taking their medications properly...no dui I mean.

The person who caused the crash was on "other drugs" besides the methadone and we dont know what they are so either way I am sure justice was served in this case.

I believe that methadone is a government marketed drug to keep people from truly bettering there selves if we need a new drug law lets say OK rewrite how long a clinic can keep you dosed up say maybe max 6 months from start to finish there is no reason why the users of this drug need it longer than 6 months if there is no other reason than being a addict if you are terminally ill and need it to stay conformable OK but if it was set in place to get you off street drugs then why the hell do you need it for years ? I feel it is a selfish way of keeping high all the excuses in the world don't make it right you are just harming your life,family and others when you don't have the backbone to get off DRUGS of any form.. If the government wants to get involved do it right if you cant outlaw it then at least truly control it from users taking it for yrs that is all the government needs to do to control this drug!

right on..you mean like an EXIT stradigy? They do not want any exit,they want us under thier thumb.When we have an operation that requires a rehab,there is a plan in place.ex amount of time for this and that, but with the clinics and primary care givers,once on the Dronetrain,they would love us to ride till we die.I said and lots of others have said.stop this train I'm gettin off.We have thrilled alot of people and pissed of a few more.I say, piss on them that want us on that fucked up ride,no more droneathon for this guy.Can be is being done as we speak,just need to make up the mind and get the right MINDSET,then all is possible,maintain for today...EZ....and just how stupid is not having an exit plan?....

They need to stay on it so they dont relapse. Long term heroin use will destroy the endorphins in ones brain and if its not replaced such as with methadone then the chance of relaps is great.

2 Years for an effective intake and detox program.And that is pushing it for some. I personally like to see my patients come in and stabilize on the lowest dose possible. Then begin a 6 month detox calculated to their dose. This is most effective and I see far fewer relapses.

Wow you are a doctor or a Methadone clinic Counselor?!?!?! That explains why you are always spot on and so knowledgable!

I remember telling you how things worked at my clinic on the first day there. My counselor is awesome, he used to use drugs and smoke weed ALOT so when I fail for weed they dont give me any trouble for it. They are more worried about Benzo's and Cocaine.

Also, since you like to see them stabilize at a low dose, whatare their doses usually like in milligrams? Are they allowed to go as high as they want to go dose wise? I had been on 50mg's and last friday I just switched to 60mg's. Last time when I was at the clinic I drank everyday, so I needed to take 150mg's of methadone a day to hold me, now iam good on 60 for now. I was talking to my counselor about my cravings and he said I shouldnt be getting them as bad as I have and to get increases if it is feeling that bad. I dont want to go up too high on dose too fast because since Iam doing so good I plan on being on the program for awile. Thanks!

A Typical intake would start at 30mg and go to 60mg over a 14 day period. They can request to stop the intake level at any time during the rise from 30 to 60mg. But after stoping the formal intake they must hold for 10 to 14 days befor going up again. Counselorat large. Peace IS!!

Wow thanks fot that info. I was talking to a counselor a my clinic and not my own, I was having a cigarette and so was she so we started talking and she said the doctor starts people off at 15mg's to 20mg's MAX now! It used to be 30mg's and on my 2nd time he gave me 40mg's the first day! This time I had a buzz still so they started me on 15mg's but I heard they do it to EVERYBODY now, no matter how sick!

Damn, I wwas allowed to go up 5mg's a day every day, than 10mg's a day when I got to 50. I guess it is different at every place though.

That's good you dont give up. I had been too MMT twice and couldnt make it work, but "Third time is a charm" so far as they say. I was tlaking too my councelor the other day and he was saying "When you came back I was thinking "Oh no, we are going to go through the same things again" But I had quit everything besides cannabis and he sees what an Improvement I have made and is now proud of me. Iam glad I was able to do it too because I feel great.
