QUAKERTOWN SCHOOL SUPPORT STAFF WILL CHALLENGE OUTSOURCING PLAN
QUAKERTOWN — The Quakertown Education Support Professionals Association will ask the Quakertown school board Thursday to abandon its plan to outsource 100 cafeteria and custodial jobs.
The association will present to the board a petition signed by more than 1,500 taxpayers who want the board to keep cafeteria and custodial jobs in-house, a press release from the association says.
“We are basically showing the board that the taxpayers do not want the high quality of services provided to the community’s school children to be given away to an outside private company that will bring strangers into our school district,” QESPA President Scott Hendricks said in the release.
The QESPA’s contract expires on June 30.
Union and school board leaders have not yet started contract negotiations, but the school board has asked administrators to solicit proposals for food service and custodial work from outside firms.
The Quakertown Community School District has a food service and custodial budget of $5.5 million. School board members believe hiring an outside vendor could help them save money on food and retirement benefits.
The district’s website hosts a list of frequently asked questions about subcontracting. Go to www.qcsd.org and find the link under site shortcuts.
