My daughter was 21 and on Nov. 17, 2006 went by ambulance to Good sam hospitals Er for a seziure. My daughter had never had a seziure before. Her symtoms included fever vomitting headache confussion numness in arms and legs and lower level of consiousness. Dr. Wooodard did blood work a x-ray and a ct scan. He then told us that he was sure it was not meningitis because he had been doing this for years, and that there was no reason for a lumbar puncture or to keep her for further observation diagnoised her with seziure disorder and released her. The next day I took her to Spanaway medical clinic. Dr. Stone reviewed her hospital chart did blood work said her white count was still high but was sure it was not meningitis but just a flu and nothing to worry about. He gave her a shot for her head ache and vomitting and released her. That night she was taken to another er by ambulance. A lumbar was performed and was possitive for viral meningitis and herpes simplex enephalitis. My daughter responded at first but went into cardiac arrest on the 22 and life support was with drawn the next day. After educating my self on this disease and contacting other medical doctors I found that a patient with her symtoms requires a lumbar puncture to rule out the possibility of this disease as the failure to consider the possibilty of having this disease results in a delay in diagnoises and treatment with subsequent increased risk of mortality. I filed a complaint with Good Sam Hospital and just recevied there results I was told that they have heighten their Er doctors on the symtoms of this disease and that Dr. woodard is a independant employer and no actions would be taken against him. But I should file a complaint with the State. This hospital has the power to fire him How sad that we intrust this hospital to provide us proper medical care and to do everything possible for recovery. And when they do not we are left with devistating results. My daughter died as a result of their negliance and they still allow this doctor to practice at their hospital putting more patients at risk. There web site clearly states that they are eqiped to diagnoise meningitis , they are truly misleading the public, These doctors still hold a license In this case I feel that they gave them a license to Kill. I hope my daughters story can provide the public awareness before going to this er and perhaps her story will save a life. HER NAME IS JESSECA

Many years ago we expierenced the same thing. Our son was taken to Good Sam with clear symtoms of spinal menegitis. Our son had two previous bouts of this disease so we were very aware or the symptons.Upon our arrival we explained his medical history to the Dr.but we were told it could not be menegitis again. Our sons condition continued to worsen. We became so insisting they listen to us the Dr.finaly agreed to do a spinal tap.The pressure was so great in the spinal column that it blew the top off of the gauge. We were very blessed that our son survived in spite of the Dr.He would not have if we did not have experinced this before. Our son eventualy reguired surgury but not at Good Sam hospital. My heart goes out to you and your loss.My prayers are with you. and yes,It was the same Dr.

Jan,
Do you remember wat Er doctor treated your Son?
I received a phone call from Gail Freeman who works at Good Sam. She told me that because no actions were taken on Dr. Woodard they would no longer be able to assist me in resolving this matter. She said that until Dr. Woodard is negligent in another death actions or firing him would not be taken. I expressed my concern to hr about the negligence of this doctor harming another patient. She did not seem to care about it. She asked me what I wanted to gain by this I told her that All I wanted were answers on why this doctor faled to perform the proper tests on my daughter she told me doctors are human and make mistakes. So basicly as I said we have to live with the devestating results.
I just so hope that there decision does not take someone eleses life.

I had a similar experience many years ago at Good Sam regarding a botched gall bladder operation on my daughter and follow up care. I filed a complaint with admin, no results.

This last Sept my wife had a major heart attack and the EMT wanted to take her to Good Sam because it was the closest.

I told them in no uncertain terms that I wouldn't take my dog there, she goes to St Jo's.

She's doing well BTW.

Thank You for sharing your story about Good Sam Hospital. I am so glad to hear that you and your wife are well. I am hoping that our stories will inform other patients of this hospitals negligence before deciding to be treated there. As far as filing a complaint with them I feel your pain I just wanted answers but they were not willing to give them to me they dont seem to care about the pain they inflict on others as they are not willing to hold there doctors accoutable for the negligence they have caused to their patients

Cheri-I am so sorry for your preventable loss. My prayers are with you and your family. I am a local medical provider practicing in the Bonney Lake/Puyallup area. I have heard countless similar horror stories from my patients regarding care at Good Sam. Most of these stories are regarding missed diagnosis and poor/inadequate treatment of potentially life-threatening illness. I have recently taken the stance of recommending my patients NOT seek GSH ER if I feel they need emergent care. I can only hope the hospital will undergo some radical revamping of their care standards now that Multi-care has taken over management.

Dear concerned Provider,
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS,IT IS SO NICE OF YOU TO THINK OF ME AND MY DAUGHTER JESSECA.
I AM GRATEFUL THAT HER STORY IS BEING READ AND BRINGING AWARENESS TO OTHERS ABOUT THIS HOSPITAL.
I TOO HOPE THAT MULTI CARE WILL MAKE CHANGES TO THIS HOSPITAL SO OTHERS ARE NOT AT RISK FOR SEEKING MEDICAL CARE...

GOD BLESS YOU

I'm very sorry for your losses.
Good Sams is the WORST hospital ever.
They through you to the side like your a pos..I can see why things like what happen to you would happen because they treat their patience like pos and if you walk in to the ER the wait time is 10hrs or more.
It's useless.

Worst Hospital ever. There's a nurse named Marci there that is awful and unprofessional. Avoid Good Sam ER, the wait time is ridiculous, it's old, and extremely dirty.

My husband went to GS ER a couple of years ago when his gall bladder burst. He was in extreme pain so bad that he couldnt stop wailing out because it hurt so bad. They left him sitting in the waiting room for over 6 hours before they saw him. One of the nurses had the audacity to ask him if he could "keep it down" when he was screaming out in pain. I just wanted to slap her. Then he had to throw up and couldnt make it to the bathroom fast enough(agin caused by the pain) and the same nurse came to him and said that the bathroom was across the hall if he needed to do that. I hate her. she doesnt deserve to be a nurse. Nurses are supposd to care about their paitents not treat them like dirt.

What other hospitals are there if you don't want to go to GSamaratin? I thought it was the only one close.

Pierce County seems to be blessed with many fine hospitals.

My pick is St. Josephs in Tacoma, but there is also Tacoma General, and Allenmore.

It's a shame about Good Sam, but I have yet to hear anything good about them. However, I understand they are now under a new administration, so hopefuly things will improve.

Good Sam is notoriously an inadequate hospital, to say the least. I have had 2 run ins with them, one with my very ill son and one a few years later myself. Let's suffice it to say that they did nothing to help me when I went in, I waited over 7 hrs with a severe medication allergy, received NO CARE (except an unnecessary cat scan), was released and had to go to the U of W within 7 hours for help (which I received in less than 1 hour). Good Sam sent me to collections after I refused to pay them $4000.00 for nothing. I paid U of W $240.00 at the time of my release, and they actually treated me. Go figure.
As someone else said, I would not trust GS with my dog.

My brother was beaten in the Mardi Gras incident a few years back in Seattle. After complaining of head pain, throwing up, etc, not remembering what had happened in Seattle. They had him wait for over 4 hours in the waiting room. When they finally got him back, they ran tests and found that he had two skull fractures and his brain was hemmoraging. They immediately went into full gear, sending him to TG by ambulance. TG was irate with the lack of concern and action by GS. He was actually assigned a "homicide detective" by the Seattle police, because they for several days were doing "comfort measures" and didn't expect him to survive. Had he have stayed at GS, he may not be with us today!

I am so sorry for everyones bad experiences at Good Samaratin. My husband has been a patient there 9 times in the last 4 years and has received great care. The wait is always long in emergency, but the care he received was not awful. Our first experience with this hospital was 4 years ago when we took him in with confusion and high fever. He didn't even know his own kids. Almost immediately an ER doctor started doing tests for meningitis and admitted him. The Dr's name was Dr. Meman and he litterly saved my husbands life because he acted so quickly on the medication. My husband also had viral meningites and herpes simplex encephilitis. One of the nurses later told us that my husband was a miracle because people with this just don't survive. He spent 6 weeks in the hospital and received great care. I truly hope that he is not the only one who has received good care. I agree that their ER services for the most part sucks royaly. There is no reason for such long waits to be seen. Anyway, I just wanted to let others know that there has been good results at GS.

A few years ago I had to take my infant son to the hospital and the closest one in the middle of the night was GSH. My baby was crying so loud and for so long they asked me to wait outside in the middle of the night so we would not disturb the other people also waiting for hours. So instead of helping, we were pushed aside. After 4 hrs of waiting and getting NO help for my son, I left ant went to Valley Med. There, he was seen and treated with in 1.5 hrs for a severe ear infection. I will NEVER go to GSH under any circumstances.
