I have a cell phone with NO SERVICE and i'm just wondering when the hell the new tower is going to be turned on. This is getting rediculous!

The deadline on setting up the tower is not due until the end of September. However, the technicians are trying to get it done before then. After the setup is done, there will be about a week of testing and then it should go live (if no problems are found). It will also be a 2G (Edge) tower at first, so everyone that is thinking they will get 3G service is going to be disappointed.

Will the tower eventually be 3G? I would like to get an internet card and get rid of my phone lines.

Do you get service anywhere in Puxico? Every time I drive through on 51, I don't have any. Someone at the school told me that there's no service anywhere in Puxico. Is that true?

I live in town and I get service, as a matter of fact I live up by the school and our service is fine inside and outside the house. I also get service on the other side of town where my friends live. It does break up coming thru the hills on 51 but otherwise ours is pretty good.

Do you know when the 3g is coming?

3G most likely will not be coming anytime soon. With the ATT air card one is able to get the internet without the 3G network. Also if you have an ATT hardwired phone at home and a cell plan you may go to whats called a U-verse plan and have both at a reduced rate and have unlimited long distance on the home phone just like your cell, if you have the right plan. Dial 611 on your cell and ask about the u-verse plan. You can also go to mywireless.com at ATT and referance local towers to see where coverage is available and where it is not.

I'm not sure when the 3G will be put online. As Turk 182 said, it probably won't be really soon. I do know that AT&T ran fiber optic cable to the tower, which is a good sign for future expansion to 3G. By having fiber to the tower, no further trenching will be needed to the tower. That will make it less expensive and easier for them to convert it. It will simply be a matter of adding T1 data lines at the home office. It doesn't do any of us Puxico residents a lot of good, but Poplar Bluff is scheduled to go to 3G very soon.

On the aircard, does the 2g vs 3g mean anything..or is that just for the phones?

it would be for both. 3G is a much faster network. 2G runs at around 256Kbps, while 3G currently runs at the same speed as other traditional broadband services. I think AT&T network now supports up to 3.7Mbps on 3G.

Well...even the Edge is faster than my 56k lanline modem speed. But, if 3G is a long time coming, maybe I should get satellite internet. Hmmm.

I have satellite Internet at my house and it works very well. It is more expensive, but I definately a lot better than dial-up. If you factor in that some people still have dedicated phone lines for the Internet, it's actually not that more expensive...you could also check with someone like Battles Communcation in Dexter to see if you are close enough to get broadband through their towers.

Yeah...I could dump the land line when the tower is turned on...and get satellite for the internet. The total cost would be similiar or a little lower that way. Then..maybe switch to the aircard if they ever go 3g. By the way...do you recommend Wild Blue or Hughes net?

I have Wildblue and like it. I really haven't heard much about Hughes Net, so I really can't give you much information how good they are, or not. I know that the prices are compatible though...

Hughes Net and Wildblue both limit your account monthly if you pass a certain download limit. If you download say from iTunes, Amazon, or stream videos from sites like YouTube you will reach your limit quick and they will cut your speeds down below dialup. So check into it before you do any contracts. It's also stated somewhere within their long ass TOS crap. Have you tried contacting Boycom Cablevision in Poplar Bluff for highspeed internet? I live in Wappapello and they started servicing us in November. I had a few issues with them at the beginning of the year and they kept ignoring my problems so I reported them to the Better Business Bureau and then they were quick to fix my 3 month long problem and I haven't had any issues with them since. Worth a shot to call and see if they run highspeed there. I know they run cable there.
