How many of you remember the NRHS fire in May of 1968? Where were you and what do you remember?Thoughts? Comments?

Does anyone remember the St. Valentines Day
Massacre at Naptune Movers? I believe it was in
1977. I had worked there in the mid 60's for
a short time. Where were you and what do you remember? Thoughts? Comments?

I was in the cafeteria with my friends having breakfast when the alarms sounded. There had been a few other incidents in the previous weeks but this one was the big one. As we all made out way up the stairs, the smoke was filling the halls and the stairwells. Mrs. Weinstein, a teacher, was just coming out of the door to her office, so we hooked on to her and left. I had my dad's car so we went home and then my dad and I came back to the school. My father used to take movie films of fires for the NRFD, which 8mm movies I have now. He took a few rolls of the HS fire. We had to finish our graduating year in mobile classrooms and also at Albert Leonard, where the kid was caught setting fire to the auditorium curtain. I also remember one of the construction workers found a garbage can on fire in the library and picked it up and threw it out of the window I believe. He was injured and taken to the hospital. At that time, the HS had a lot of construction going on. I don't think the kid that set these fire graduated with us.....!!!

Yes I do. Freddy Cowan (Cowen)?- some of my friends used to lift weights with him at the SS boys club.
My bosses and I listened to what was happening on my radio, which had a police band. Very scarey to hear back and forth what was going on. And, of course, a tragic ending.

Carol,
I was in the kitchen area with my Mom that morning down by the teachers cafeteria when the alarm went off and Pete Caputo and Frank Agresta raced up the stairs to the fire. My Mom heard the crackling from the area where they were putting in the elevator near the Library. I lost all my stuff as my locker was under the Auditorium that collapsed. The constrution worker I believe was James Saccomano, and Ronald M who set the fire was arrested trying to set another one at Albert Leonard.

By the way, my aunt was one of the secretaries in the office at Neptune that day and escaped unhurt.

My sister and I were on the playground of Roosevelt. Someone earlier had mentioned a fire but we all thought he was kidding. Then we looked up and could see the smoke. Funny how there has been very little on the internet or anywhere about the fires at NRHS and TRES.

Hi Harold

I really loved going to NRHS. I sent John a get well card while he was in the hospital and he actually called me at home and thanked me. Did you know that Ronald was arrested after that for impersonating a PO and robbing elderly people and then for killing a kid in Mahopac with a shotgun. Talk about slipping through the cracks.

I don't know.
He was caught at Albert Leonard. Whether they kept him locked up I don't know. What month was the fire at Roosevelt and was it in 1968? Was it after the NRHS fire?

I don't remember the fire at Roosevelt? I know that Ronald M got caught at Albert Leonard by a plant from the police academy posing as a new student. He ended up getting his reward in prison.
I have a bunch of the fire pictures from a book they made for us after the fire. Do you have a copy of that book?

No I only have my yearbook and the extra picture they pasted inside. I had the book but I had a little brother way younger than me and my guess is he did something with it unbeknownst to me, until now actually. I have 8mm movies my dad took which I have watched many times over the years. We are lucky that we didn't get hurt.
And to be that young and to set the fires in multiple locations and fulfill what he kept trying to do and did just goes to show how sick he was/is.

I was down the street, at the College Diner. I walked up, and watched it burn. Ther were hundreds of us, out by North Ave, and along the lawn by Eastchester Rd., just wondering if it would ever end, and hoping that the firemen would be safe. I remember that it was a warm day, and I felt sorry for a fireman up on a truck ladder, pouring water into the fire. I remember thinking 'he must be hot as Hell.'

I knew Ronald M as a kid. He served time, and later got out.

Harold and others:
I am still collecting New Rochelle photos, especially after 1950, for the permenant collection of the New Rochelle Public Library.

The fire in Roosevelt was a couple of years before the one in the high school. I think they caught who ever did it but do not know if it was the same person. The fire was in the middle of the day and the school was filled but everyone got out.

There's a published account of a guy with that name incarcerated in Ossining and SingSing 1990 for robbery of $100. In prison he was apparently the victim of retaliation for whistle blowing about officer's behavior and was awarded $100,000 damages. sentenced for 5 years for $100 while Madoff made off with how much? Along with all of his kind-and what will they get? Most- nothing but another office with a better view.

Doesn't it just drive you nuts...

He is listed for two jail terms in the NYSDOCS lookup one term in 75 and one in 1990
does not give a date for the arson or other incident in Mahopac unless he was found innocent of that charge. Who knows.

I heard that he had an untimely death a few years back.

I will look for some of my older pictures and see if I can make them available. Are you on facebook?
