The world's most famous groundhog keeps trying to escape from his home in central Pennsylvania , but he hasn't gotten very far.

i'm not one of those bleeding animal rights people but i figure this groundhog has to be miserable living in a den in a library...groundhogs are wild animals who should be roaming freely.

I had no idea the poor critter was locked up all year in a library. Seriously, it would be more humane to have him in a zoo with other groundhogs!

Whose bright idea was it to house him in a Library? GHs bite- Phil bites his handler every year- he could bite a patron or employee.

Maybe he wants to get out of here because he is smarter than the people that go to see him every year.
Even this groundhog realizes that what he "sees" has nothing to do with the weather.
He's like, "I'm a f**cking groundhog!...Stop putting all this weather stuff on me!...I pop out, I look around, I see or don't see something, next thing you know...people think I'm a magic freak show...I want out!!!"

I must admit that the tourist in me that loves absurd americana would like to have gone to Pux. before it got too big. But even then I probably would've only gone if they borrowed a GH from an animal park for the day or.... had to go out and catch one themselves ala CADDYSHACK!

Does anyone, besides children, really believe he prognosticates the weather?

Tell all those thousands that are there on that cold faithfull day every year, snow, sleet, freezing rain, darkness of night and early morning, there will be even MORE next year to attend since more will be laid off, all those will certainly have more faith in my Phil than your messiah!!!

Having found a ground hog in the road with his eyes closed I feel I have the right to comment. Phil cannot be "turned loose". He has little fear of dogs, traffic, and most of all people. Most people would believe the animal rabid when it shows no fear of people, and try to kill it. He would be lucky if he lived three days. He would also be scared to death. Phil wants out only to return to his real home, a large three story home where he has free run of the entire house. Where he is loved well fed and safe. O yes happy.
