something else that should be done is to check into the legality of the twin bridges on the cemetery road , its a lawsuit waiting to happen , the bridges were closed by the state in the 70s and the town is allowing people to use them , there by saying they are safe , unless the town has them inspected by the state or some engineering firm we are libel , along with anybody that puts a board on them ...

Yep it's just a matter of time before that lawsuit happens my friends, it seams like it happened with the twins downtown a few years back....

Bubba, that was a nice thing for those people to do, whomever they were. I am hopeful that with the positive changes that must be made in our community, that information will be flowing and good things will be happening. The people of Forestport have trusted some selfish interests over the past few administrations, and it must be exposed and gotten rid of.
Think of the days of Dorothy Mooney, Emily Broadbent and the people who GAVE TO our community and DID NOT TAKE FROM IT.

SPECIAL INTERESTS GROUPS SHOULD BE EXPOSED AND DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY.

Bob, are the bridges you speak of on Cemetery Rd., Town Owned also? Or are they County?

People are beginning to find things out for themselves and it shows they care for our town.
Many of us have not been doing that for quite a while, but it is vital to let our town reps. know what is remiss, and then follow up to see what they do about it.
It is becoming known that such as the planning board mess, we cannot have TOTAL trust in our town government. WE MUST KEEP TO THE MEETINGS AND KEEP SEARCHING INFORMATION ELSEWHERE TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON.

FORESTPORT DESERVES NOTHING LESS THAN OUR CARING AND VIGILANCE.

Copy from Town Web Page re: Highway.
In the summer season, the workers inspect and maintain all town roads and bridges, repair culverts, remove brush, mow road shoulders, and sweep sand from roads and hamlet streets. They also assist with repairs and improvements of Town municipal facilities.
Note ALL town bridges???? Is Cemetery Rd. Bridge town owned???
This is taken from the Town's Web page.

the state closed the cemetery rd. bridges in the 70s , the town turned them over to the county to remove them , the county never did , and from what I understand nobody is sure if the county turned them back to the town , the state didn't close the bridges because the wood was bad , and there is no walk way , I know the snowmobiles use it in the winter , and the snowmobile club is supposed to insure it in the winter , but what about the summer when cars , trucks , 4 wheelers and people cross it ..... If the snowmobile club needs the bridges , then the town should sell them to the club and let them be liable instead of the town ....

I don't live in Forestport, but I absolutely love the area. I'm retiring in a few years and have been actively looking at property there. The village could use a little sprucing up, and I've noticed there are some properties, vacant I believe in need of repairs. But that being said, the architecture of the homes in the village gives it a charm all of it's own. Maybe you could check into getting grants of any of them could be listed as historical. I've seen a few postings here that make the suggestion that there needs to be activities for kids, and they're right! If the kids today find things to do and enjoy being brought up in the area, then maybe they'll have a better chance of staying once they're out of school. I might also suggest, and again, this of from an outsiders point of view, that the strengths be played up. How about something like a Winter-Fest, something that would include something like a snowmobile rodeo and/or races, snowball wars for the kids, food and beverage tents, nighttime bon fire, etc. Stealing an idea, and I think it might be a huge insurance issue as I think it's why it ended in Sylvan Beach, but an idea to check into, in the summer how about an anything but a boat race on the reservoir. Someone earlier mentioned stumps, but I'm sure there's somewhere you could get a 300 foot course for it. Maybe you could work with the Adirondack RR and set something up with them for either of the above ideas, since they do a Buffalo Head run, tie it in. You guys got a great place to live! Play up on your strengths!

the trouble with the vacant properties is they are privately owned and unless the owner wants to make the properties respectable , there is nothing the town can do , the one building on woodhull next to the church is one of the oldest buildings in the village . as far as the kids , you have the right idea , maybe have a family fishing derby on the pond every year , a weekend of ball games on the field , old timers , kids , women , fire departments , a family golf tournament , these could be yearly events , but you have to get people involved to spearhead these ideas , we have the town birthday party in Aug. and some of these things could go with that weekend , and if we had a way to get families involved it would be good for the town and people could have fun . but going back to politics , the town moved the skating rink up to the town hall years ago , from the little league field and I think there has been a rink for maybe 2 or 3 years in the last 20 , I have personally talked to some board members through the years about doing more for the kids but they didn't seem interested ..

To the voters of Forestport

I am Parker Snead and I am running for Forestport Town Supervisor against Bill Hasenauer in a Republican primary September the 10th. I believe I can be a good Town Supervisor. I am a good student, I tell the truth and I love our town. I have been president /Founder of Forestport Boat Company for 30 years. I'm stubborn and persistent in pursuing something I believe in like the Twin Bridges. I want all of us to be informed on the issues so together we can move forward. A well informed electorate is an asset to our Town. I don't think I know everything and I am so thankful for the support I have received. I will not transform into what we are trying to replace. I am a cancer survivor and I value everyday. I truly believe the Town's officers and employees should be humble and eager to make our task easier, not more complicated and not use their positions for personal gain. I believe we should use the buildings and equipment we have and I believe there is a lot of fat on both the Town and Highway sides. I want the Town to work with the White Otter Fish and game club to make a signature Forestport horse fair/ harness race or some other annual event to promote the Town as an end destination. We should support our Christmas Parade. I want the Hamlet maintained and improved as a business district with a possible Loggers/Canal museum to celebrate our heritage and our history. I want the Horton Bridge maintained and I want the old Meekerville Twin bridges deck repaired or closed. They are a liability. I want the good old Boy Republican committee returned to the people and will work to change the rules allowing elected officials to hijack fair process by all members being incumbents seeking reelection. This problem goes all the way to Washington. I don't believe in personal slander or false ambush adds being run right before the election like what was done before the bridge vote and will probably happen to me. I don't believe in unelected, salaried Deputy Supervisors with full benefits and expenses. That doubles the cost. I believe all elected officials and employees should be computer literate because information is power for the people. I believe in Topix.com because it gives everyone a means to keep abreast of what is happening and I will remain accessible if elected. I believe people should use their real name on their post like I do. I stand by my post and they are there as a public record. I believe the summer recreation program should be based at the old Woodgate school and the program should be enhanced with a summer production and talent show as well as a possible croquet tournament/ badminton challenging parents or towns people. Woodgate school is a magical site.I believe we have to be careful about soliciting and excepting some grants because they are project creators that we may not be able to afford like the study on creating three sewer districts when we possibly can't afford one. Is the DEC going to have access to the study and what are the consequences? We have to look at if we need a salaried Grant writer. We need to have a better understanding of the Planning Board practices. We have to get a handle on health insurance in general and part time positions in particular. I understand reasonable hourly cost and compensation. I am a physical conservative and I have no intention of raising Taxes. I monitor Topix.com daily so make your honest opinions know to me and to other voters. Thank you. Parker Snead

can u define a "physical" conservative. Is that a conservative detail seeking politician who works out a lot?

I think most of us would like a fiscal conservative.

thanks for being so accepting. I didn't mean my comment in a mean spirited way...just trying to keep things light on a normally heavy baggage topic site. perhaps your answer is a sign of leadership potential. good luck "mr snead".

Parker,What improvements would you make on the Woodgate school site for the recreation program? For example would you add to the playground, had you given any thought to an actual basket ball or tennis court for the kids to use in Woodgate? I know it was and always has been like pulling teeth to keep the Forestport tennis court a working item, but what are your thoughts? As Utica has the Boilermaker had you given any thought to a large scale snowshoe race or cross country ski race or both? The Forestport horse fair/ harness race you mention, perhaps horse pulls, barrel racing, hurdle races etc! What about a shooting competition like a turkey shoot etc for adults and kids at the Fish and Game Club with entry fees and prizes? As insurance has been mentioned I would like to point out that places like Snow Ridge ski hill you have to sign off on personal injury to use their facility! Point being there are ways to make these situations work! I have many many more ideas, but wanted to touch on just a couple for now to get your input. Thank you for your time.

Pat, I'm just in after a very long day but I wanted to respond to your thoughtful post. Your post shows why you want input from folks. You have many interesting ideas, many of I would have never thought of. I have never been in charge of a Summer Rec. program but I have inspected the Woodgate School and see many possibilities. There are many activities for the kids without paving a tennis court or basketball court but those would enhance the program immensely. We would have to find funding to make those improvements and it is a very short program. The program is 6 weeks for 5 days for a total of 30 days with half of those days scheduled for road trips so the kids would only be at the school for 15 days. There are allot of sports that can be played on grass like: Badminton, kick ball, croquet, races and soccer. The playground equipment needs a little TLC but I believe it to be serviceable with new swings and a piece of plywood installed over the mossy platform on the jungle jim. The school building itself is a wonderful space for any and all indoor activities.

On the signature annual event for our town, There are a lot of possibilities. Boonville has the Boonville fair and Woodsman Field Days. The only facility I can think of to host something along those lines is the White Otter Fish and Game club. When I put on our horse event last summer, I wanted to host it in Forestport not Boonville. We had our event opposite Woodsman's on the same weekend and we still had a good crowd. There are only four weekends in August and everyone has many things going on. I made several trips down to Morrisville State Collage to familiarize myself with their equestrian and Harness racing programs. They would like to participate in our event but there is a schedule conflict. They have a large participation in the State Fair in Syracuse and the Harness program is on summer break. I did not have any problem getting event insurance. White Otter is wounderful to work with and very reasonable cost wise. Something to think about......

Congratulations on Pat and Parker and their constructive exchange of posts here.
It is so good to read positives for Forestport.
Perhaps further on down the road, when Parker has been able to shake out the feathers, we as a WHOLE community can begin to plan for controlled growth in proper areas and to showcase our town.
We do not want to loose our quaintnes, so the growth has to be with caution and caring to preserve the very "spirit" of our town.

We are unique, and while we may have to sacrafice a TAD of that, our families, our government, and small businesses here must be secured also.

With our help, our current local government must be changed to one of all encompassing and not selfish exclusiveness.
