Several inauspicious events occurred before ,during and after the year 1070 which points to an unreported conquest of the Chola empire by Srivijaya in 1070
and subsequently the appointment of a Buddhist malay from Sriwijaya as the new king of Chola.
These events are :
1)Violent death of the Chola king,Virarajendra in 1070
2)The empty throne of chola was filled by a stranger bearing the name Kulotungga, A kind of name which would be nothing unusual in Srivijaya but was totally alien to the hindu tamils up to that point.
3)The Srivijayan emperor, Diwakara explicitly described by a Chinese official document in 1077 as the foreign ruler of Chola
while
4) Rajendra I which is King Kulothunga’s other name was identified by that same Chinese document as simply the king of Chola. Implying that he is a subordinate to the king of Srivijaya
5)An inscription was made in a Guangzhou temple testifying how its restoration around 1064-1067 was funded by Diwakara, the king of Srivjaya. Taking into account the affirmation of diwakara as chola’s foreign overlord by the chinese govt in 1077 , we can arrive to a conclusion that the subjugation of chola by srivijaya happened between 1064 and 1077.
6)A letter was written by a Song dynasty official in 1106 clearly stating that Chola is a subject of Srivijaya
Throughout Kulottunga's 50 year rule chola remained in Chinese records as the subject of sriwijaya. Upon his death chola ceased to be under srivijayan suzerainty and they immediately embarked on a nationwide cover up campaign to try erase the big time humiliation they have just endured.
Hence the death of king viararajendra was registered as “killed in a civil war”.
A genealogy that links kulothunga to past chola kings was fabricated .
Such falsification explains why Kulothungga’s genealogical links could not be verified to this day.
Even a poem touting the destruction of kedah by Kulothunga was also created.under this nationwide denial campaign crazy.gif
Kulothunga’s swivijayan background can be ascertained not only by the fact that names containing the word ‘tungga’ are common in sriwijaya and non existent in chola before 1070 but also by his eastern region origin mentioned by a cholan inscription.
Speaking of inscriptions, those found in chola territories can only be taken seriously if it does not glorify chola
Since the inscription claiming successful chola attacks against sriwijaya could not be independently verified by any other side, it can be summarily dismissed as delusional state sponsored fantasies.
If chola conqured srivijaya why didn’t they set up similar inscriptions there ?
Any spineless coward could erect self flattering monuments in his own backyard..
Besides, it doesn’t make sense at all for those primitive, weakling, loincloth wearing, pussy Indians to even contemplate an attack against a militarily superior neighbour no matter how large the population disparity was between them. Quality will always prevail over sheer numbers.
The Chinese had been completely neutral throughout the two centuries of chola – srivijaya interactions. That means their testimony takes precedence if chola and Chinese accounts contradict each other. And the chinese did not even report any attack on sriwijaya by chola. Much less a chola victory. Instead ,what they reported was to the contrary..Srivijaya ruled Chola.
Since chola denied it, the credibility of their entire uncorroborated historical account can now be deemed questionable especially the ones claiming military successes
I notice many imbeciles using the word raid when discussing the alleged chola attempts to challenge sriwijayan military supremacy.
Heck. Do they even know what raid means.? A Raid is a surprise attack .You cannot raid people who already knew you are coming. How would those miserable fisihing boat sized chola navy vessels go about raiding the most powerful maritime power in the world ? The giant ships of srivijaya would have quashed them like bugs.

Thank you so much for telling the truth. I've read this alot on asia finest. Those tamils are really ignorant, they think the malayan kingdom was founded on the base of their accomplishment.

I did my research and found out that not only chola was under the control of srivijaya but sri lanka as well. I found on asia finest that the arabs told this that srivijaya or zabag(as arab calls it)

"In the sea of Champa (eastern South China Sea) is the empire of Maharaja, the king of the islands, who rules over an empire without limit and has innumerable troops. Even the most rapid vessels could not complete in two years a tour round the isles which are under his possesssion. The territories of this king produce all sorts of spices and aromatics, and no other sovereign of the world gets as much wealth from the soil."

(Mas'udi, 943)

Not only that my friend our great srivijaya empire even lay siege upon african continent!

"The Book of the Wonders of India, written by a Muslim author mentions in 945 an expeditionary raid off the East African coast by a fleet of 1000 ships from the East Indies. Centuries later in 1154, the Arab geographer Idrisi wrote in Kitab Rujjar that "the people of the isles of Zabag come to the land of Zanj on small and large ships...for they understand one another's languages." He also states: "The residents of Zabag go to the land of Sofala (near Beira, Mozambique) and export the iron from there supplying it to all the lands of India. No iron is comparable to theirs in quality and sharpness."

To be honest i'm not proud of this fact but i guess the fact that we raided africa that made them use the word "malaya" in swahilli as vulgar meaning....

Our ancient malay ancesstors had the strength and power to rule the 7 seas. Why is it so hard for people to grasp that malay circumnavigate the african continent reaching europe and launching their age of exploration?

Millions of people are baffled by the capabilities of paficic islander to find small island at such a vast ocean. The ancient malays in archipelago were more powerful. We might even reach east of south america via the atlantic ocean!

Logically thinking how on earth did the europeans suddenly came out of nowhere and discovered america and asia within a few years?

Even the famous admiral zhang would require the expertise of the malays if he wanted to cross the 7 seas. But i guess the world didn't want to say that malays played an intergral part for the world. Such a conspiracy against the malays...

But its enough to know with these knowledge that malay race aren't lazy, uneducated, incompetent or uncivilize. If anything the malays were absolute hard working people, the bravest and the most skillfull people. Not even the european or chinese could compete with us.

I truly hope that one day malaysia would stop glorifying a history of 100 years the malacca kingdom because it was actually weak. Only thing was that malay kingdom had Islam on it...

Only when malaysia starts to drop the islamic ties to malayness like the constitution can the malayan/austronesian unity become a reality. Islam is not malay and malay is not Islam. Islam is universal and it must be so. Malay is a race and have many religions on them just like the arabs, europeans, chinese, indians and africans. I mean no dissrespect towards religion whatsoever.

I've seen how our brethrens in hawaii had long for the unity of malayan race. With America and europe threathen to extinct the native of pacific islanders and african wanting to dillute any malay in madagascar. It is now we must reestablish the lost connection of malay brotherhood! Reclaim back our honor as the greatest seafaring people

To add : The true origins of malays weren't from china. No one knows where. Some postulate we came from mu continent sunked by ring of fire... Who knows

What nonsense, fishing boats have to travel the Bay of Bengal to reach, and Indians believed in Truth, and Nonviolence. and the raid was to curb Piracy. Sriwijaya empire was benefiting from piracy and Sriwijaya empire was misrepresenting facts to Chinese court. You need to see the evidence of Pallava influence on Angkor Wat and Indian influence on Perampanan. Indians spread the hinduism, buddhism and islam to South East Asia. also buddhism to Japan.

I am sure you will want say Sanskrit came from Malay. But it does not matter, as long as you are proud of what you are.

The chinese court is not stupid. They gather intelligence from their own contacts and spies.
As for "misrepresenting facts", it is an indian custom. Your imaginary raid and piracy is symptomatic of such custom.

Sorry for not replying sooner, I have been very busy. To tell you the truth I was hoping this thread would be left to slide into the back pages because only after starting it did i realise that this madras section of the forum has nothing to do with the southern indian city of the same name . It turns out that topix didnt have a madras india section . So i posted the same thread in the Tamil Nadu section of topix and was planning to make it the main thread for further discussions on this subject. Anyway thank you for your feedback. I would like to comment on some of the things you said.

Some people imagine negative things about malays just because they hate our guts. Unlike the submissive indians and chinese who lick european butts and become coolies to malay and europeans, the malays till their own land. Some became buccaneers who attacked and enslaved europeans.

I hate to say it myself but anyone could call the english lazy slum dwellers back then. Even now in this era I still don’t have the heart to deride the indolent english as being dependant on soup kitchens no matter how true it is.

To be honest I don’t think Malacca was really weak. Even with its small population malacca was still able to keep siam out of malay turf . And despite manufacturing superior firearms, malacca lost to portugal primarily because they refuse to wear body armour. Imagine having to kill the enemy by shooting them in the face which is a very small target while the enemy could hit any part of your anatomy to stop you.

Based on raw informations from Srivijayan inscriptions and chinese documents , I seriouly think that Sriwijaya was created by Malayu kingdom and not Palembang. The Malayu military base was at Minanga Kamwar which means ‘Kampar estuary’. In other words Malayu kingdom was located precisely in what is now the Riau province of Sumatera. But the empire was shortlived . By the mid690s another malay power called kedah which was then ruled by the sailendra dynasty apparently joined srivijaya as a conquering leader and assumed its identity. Kedah had no problem hijacking srivijaya in this manner because it too was already a powerful empire with the entire peninsula as well as central java among its possessions. Later on the empire’s name was changed to ‘zabag’ and it lasted till the late 1300s .
