I couldn't help but notice this morning as I was taking my child to school the way the teachers were dressed. What's up with that, they were dressed in jeans, even seen one in shorts and a t shirt. When did teachers start dressing so unprofessional? We didnt have this when I went to school, not busting on them, just a little shocked.

maybe if teachers were paid as if their service to our community was actually valuable they'd be able to dress more "professionally"

although, I'm not sure how teaching ability is altered by wearing jeans

Teachers are paid better than most of the people in the Princeton Area. I think most and not all teachers are overpaid for what they produce. The teachers should be compensated based on performance. If a teacher's class, has crappy test scores don't given them a raise. However, if they have kids that score well and excel, I would pay them more.

you're assuming that a teacher is solely responsible for the quality of the students that leave their classroom. In reality, there are many, many factors that are outside of a teacher's control that directly impact student ability, such as parental support and a good diet.

why should we punish teachers when parents are setting them up to fail?

My questions to you: Should not there be some accountability for teachers in what they produce? Everybody else that works in industry or the private sector is held to some type of standard.

I don't think there should be 0 accountability, but neither do I think that they should be punished when they are, as I said, set up to fail.

Would you punish a machinist for failing to produce a quality product when the material provided to said machinist was faulty due to their customer's negligence?

I was asking when the dress code changed, I just noticed it was different than when I went to school, and different than surrounding counties. A teacher should look more like a role model than a bum, or a fifty cent hooker. A lot of the students here can see that at home. We wonder why and how we have so many teachers having sex with students, well when they blend in with them, and don't dress to earn respect, I guess the answer is quickly revealed.

When I was in school, and I will admit it has been a couple of years, teachers dressed like professionals and their pay was far less than it is today. I think that being a teacher is teaching by example and a main part of that is by the way they present themselves. I remember when the ladies wore dresses, lipstick and a little jewelry and the men wore ties with the exception of gym teachers. Today they show up at school with bed head and clothing that looks as though they slept in them. The people that work at Walmart and at the grocery stores look more presentable than the teachers and most of them are not college educated professionals.
My comments are not intended for everyone as many dress and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Some people really need to keep their mouth shut because ignorance flies out as soon as they open it. I agree there are horrible teachers, just as there are horrible doctors, lawyers, etc. However, the disrespect that a teacher gets is uncalled for. Who in their right mind would ever think that a teacher should be paid based on test scores. If that was the case, then your child should NOT be promoted if he/she can't pass ONE test!! Now...how fair does that sound? I recently gave a review for a chapter test that would be given the next day. I went over every math problem and sent the review home to be studied. Much to my surprise several of my students failed the test that had the exact problems that were on the review. The problem...they are LAZY and want everything done for them. They won't even use a calculator when allowed!!! So don't even tell me that my pay should be based on a lazy student's test results!! Get real!!!! Also, I have personally watched students go through the WESTEST and mark whatever answer choice pops out at them first and they will be finished with the test in 5-10 minutes!! Again, don't base my pay on a lazy student. The bottom line is this....before you decide how a teacher should be paid, walk in her shoes ONE day!!

Amen! These people who bash us have NO CLUE! Let them try to keep 30+ students interested in class for 90 minutes each block! Many students DO NOT WANT TO LEARN!! They show up at school simply to get two free meals every day and to cause trouble! Those who bash teachers the loudest couldn't handle one day in the classroom!

While I agree with Princeton teacher, you seem to have a bit of a judgmental attitude. You would be one of the first to say they were on drugs if they skipped school. Have some compassion. You are in the wrong profession and I pray my kids are never in your class.

Ok Princeton Teacher,

There is a concept called a charter school were they send the best of the best of teachers to handle problem kids or one that can't cut in a regular school. Some of these teachers are compensated for their performance and do quite well.

You and others like yourself would like to pick your kids and their is alot of effort made by tachers to get to a good school like Athens where the kid are mostly white and have parents who work at Concord. As a teacher, you have a easier job than teaching these kids than say the same grade black kids that come from High Street.

The problem is that you would like to blame the parents for the kids that are sent to you who act up and don't want to learn. You should also throw rocks at the teachers who passed a kid to a grade know damn well he or she didn't have the required skills. That teacher has screwed you more than the parent by not doing his or job to begin with.

Now you are faced trying to teach last years skills plus this year's required material. Accountibilty is needed to avoid this stituation and get rid of dead wood.

As a taxpayer, I demand accountibilty on how my money is spent.

1. Dress doesn't make the teacher.
2. Teachers work hard to be a teacher , parent, counselor, coach, you name it. Only to have a lot of their good undone by some very irresponsible parenting.
3. Just like there are good and bad parents, doctors, lawyers etc, there are good and bad teachers.

I simply speak the truth! I do have compassion for my profession and for my students. I am tired though of those who bash teachers when they know absolutely NOTHING about how difficult it is to teach these days! And No, I do NOT think those who skip school are on drugs! I do feel that more parents need to get involved in their child's education! Kudos to you for being concerned about your children's education.Unfortunately, parents like you are the minority.

So the kids who have terrible parents and don't do well in school, what should happen to them? Should those kids be retained to 1st grade 3 times or maybe 4? If you retain students they will just drop out as soon as they can and drain society. Teach them what you can and pass them on and pray it's enough for them to hold down a low-wage job as adults. Not every child is college material.

Point taken. However, most of the teacher that I know have a liberal left streak in them a mile long. However, I go back to the point that the education system has a mandate to educate kids to the best of their ability. I do not agree with the "No Child Left Behind Act". Without it though, it gave teachers to much power of playing GOD in which kids get the attenion and who gets sent to the corner ignored with out being given a chance to succeed.

No system is perfect. However you need a system of checks and balances.

i get so tired of hearing teachers cry about their pay. i went to public school in mercer county, and can count on one hand the good teachers i had. most don't care, and thats counting all the teachers in jr. high and high school where we had up to six different teachers in a year. the coaches were the worst. their mind was always on the sport they coached. when you take a teaching job you know what the pay and benefits are. you get all paid holidays and sick days and all summer off. when they count their pay they want to count summer as unpaid time off, but they can spread their pay over 12 months. where else do you get all that time off. compare it to the average private sector job and you'll see the pay is pretty damn good. If anyone is underpaid its the law enforcement people that lay their live on the line every day. look what hey get paid for 12 months and how much off time they have. and before the questions asked i'm not in law enforcement. i work in the private sector and pay taxes to help pay teachers saleries. teachers need to quit crying and grow up. if you don't like what your paid quit and get a job where you actually work 12 months and then maybe when you complain the average person might listen, as it is now your crying just falls on deaf ears of those of us that actually work 12 months and pay taxes to help pay you. oh thats right you want us to pay more taxes so you can have more pay for 9 months work!
