Another issue at Princeton Middle

Recently I observed all the back and forth about the 'purse' policy at Princeton Middle School. I chose to withold comment because to me the issue was a little overblown and I believe in 'choosing your battles'. There is another issue at the school that I believe needs attention.

As of yesterday the gym floor is being torn out to be replaced. I was told by a teacher there last week that they don't know when it will be done and they don't know what they will do about gym classes if they can't go outside on a pretty day. In an age where childhood obesity is such an issue a functioning gym is so necessary.

I'd also like to know why this floor could not be replaced during the summer? Who's grand idea was it to wait until the middle of the fall semester to do it? I heard from kids yesterday that the dust from the construction was choking. What about kids with asthma and other breathing problems?

The girls volleyball team now has to play all their games away. They will not have another home game this year but will be on the road the rest of the season. This is hard on the kids and supporters and adds to travel expenses for the county. I am friends with a team mother. Apparently the high school has not been cooperative in allowing the girls to hold games there. The team has to hold practices at Mercer School gym now.

I don't get it? Didn't someone have to sue last year because of a similar problem with the softball team? I heard they won because of Title 9. Does this have to happen again because the county is unwilling to make allowances for a girl's team?

I am sure that the floor will be done in time for basketball season....all at the expense of girls volleyball and kids who can't have gym classes for a majority of the semester.

The timing of the gym floor project points to poor planning and coordination. Somebody please be creative and don't cheat our kids out of their rights to physical activity and team sports!

I feel sorry for the kids who will be bothered by all that dust! It could set off an asma attack.

They need to condem that school & build a new 1. The kids should also not be punished for the poor timing of redoing the floor. I bet that floor is full of mold. It has flooded & been replaced before.

The reason they are replacing it is because of the flooding a couple of months before school let out. It warped the floor. Water came down the back stairs so hard it even pushed the door in. It had to be replaced as well. As far as the timing, that's a good question. (Can't answer that one.)

The principals have nothing to do with the building maintenance. I would say they had to get bids on these projects, they usually do. Then, they have to take the best bid and wait for the comapany to be available. I thought that it was about 4 or 5 schools in Mercer County that had flood damage, but I may be wrong. They couldn't use the gym part of last year because of this. As for condemning the school, PMS is in pretty good shape. It is not that old. Schools cost a lot of money. All of you taxpayers would be whining about having to put out money for a new school.

Would the school administrators not have some control over when the work was done? I bet if it was basketball season it would be put off till spring. I for one wouldn't mind to pay for a better school where students wouldn't have to worry about this problem every few years. This is what like the third time the school has been damaged by flooding in recent years? The whole thing is very unfair to the students!

Just about every forum I read... YOU, whom have GRADUATED 35 F'N YEARS AGO knows everything there is to know about everything. That is AMAZING. Well, do you know about the huge crack that your fingers will fit into that is on the corner of the hallway leading into the auditorium, or the backside of the guidence office? Or maybe you have noticed that almost all of the cement has fallen off from beneath the windows.(I mean approx. 3 ft. x 1/2 ft. sections.) There is soooo much more. That's just a touch and you think it's fine? I am a taxpayer and I don't whine when something needs to be repaired or replaced. You know nothing... How about you just sit back in your easy chair and keep quiet unless you do know something for sure. Take a tour of these places sometime... or just go to some games... you will be surprised what you will see.

I went to that school when it was Princeton High School also. I also go in that school a lot now. I have been in other schools in Mercer County that are in far worse shape. I read the newspaper and learn about how the process works. I also don't think that if it was basketball season, it would make any difference. The games would be played elsewhere, just as Pikeview High has to play their football games elsewhere because of bleacher issues. They also made a lot of improvements over the summer. Oh. by the way, I don't have an easy chair, because I don't have time to relax. I work a full-time job. I volunteer at school, yes PMS and church. I have other interests too. Unless, you have a solution and can come up with the money, then quit whining all of the time.

I'm not whinning, I'm worried about part of a school collapsing while there are children and employees inside. Take some of my tax dollars and fix it... I don't mind. It's better than giving the one's at the board office another raise. Funds can be appropriated if some people would stop thinking of themselves for a moment.

I was in the school yesterday. It is in a lot better shape than a lot of schools in Mercer Co. It definately is in better shape than a school my daughter attended in another county. If it weren't the gym floor , you would be whining about something else because evidently that is all some of you know how to do. If you have ideas, run for the Board of Education. Maybe you will win and can instill your insight on the rest of us.

No, I do not know everything but I know you all do not either. I would not run for any office because people like you cannot be pleased with anything. If you built a new school, it would cost too much, be too small, not be modern enough, not have enough parking or ground with it. You would find something wrong with it and be calling me up because YOU are not satisfied. I am satisfied with PMS because I know there are worse problems that need to be handled. If they talk about consolidating and building one new school in place of two, everyone whines. Quit you belly-aching. Enough said!!!!!

I have one question about the water damage happening so often. Why keep replacing the floor, when they could replace the leaking roof?
