when was the last time they had "good teachers"?? the older teachers that were good and cared about the students are gettin older and cranky or retiring. the newer ones well they ALL need to be drug tested! seriously I know of a few (including student teachers) that are either smoking weed, poppin or snorting pills so i say if the work for the school system they need to be drug tested

Teachers get pay raises when our property taxes go up. However, every teacher is against their taxes going up. Can't be fixed unless it is voted on. Plus. Lots if bad teachers. Good one need to help get rid if the bad ones

taxes r high enough already, teachers r not the only ones struggling in this economy. your idea getting more tax payer money is the same moronic idea that they have had in Washington. look what that has done for us.

I think the teachers are overpaid. I know of teachers that just show up and then after kids leave, they bang the janitors behind closed doors. I know this for a fact. i think cameras need to be put in the classrooms!! Not sure if there are but I know one thing, I would hate for my child to go back into the class room for some reason and find his teaching doing the janitor!!

All of you people who supposedly know so much should turn these bad apples into the proper authorities. If you don't have any evidence, then you shouldn't make false allegations. If the teachers--or anyone who comes into contact with our children--are THAT bad, then they do not belong anywhere near our children. So either you do not know anything, or you don't care who spends alot of time with your children.

If you people are so concerned then maybe you should get off Topix, get a degree in education and teach.

The degree in "education" is part of the problem -- long on "theory", short on "subject knowledge".

Actually, I am an education major and your assumptions are far from the truth.

I am not a teacher but, most teacher put in more than 8hrs. a day!! They have work to do that you people don't see!!! You send your kids to school because you don't want to keep them at home!! Teachers have not had a pay raise in years.... With the way some people raise their children, teachers should be given hazard pay!!!

This is not an assumption. This is knowledge gained from my being in the "Ed biz" for 42 years. Perhaps your school is different. For instance, in Virginia (I've heard), you have to have a regular "major" in a subject in order to teach that subject. The education courses constitute the equivalent of a 5th year of preparation. I've got no qualms there.

All schools are different, therefore you can't say that the degree in education is long on theory and short on content knowledge. I can assure you that this isn't the case at my university. So you've made more of a generalization than an assumption. You can't group all education degrees into that category, as many don't fall under the "long short" facet you have described.

You're right! I should have added the qualifier "in my experience..." working with potential elementary education majors. For instance, I worked with several groups of elementary education majors, and not a single one.....not a *single one*....could explain why the sky was blue or why the arrangement of colors in a rainbow is as it is, questions that my spouse, a former teacher said that kids often asked. It appeared to me that, at least, their science knowledge was minimal, and I could only guess about their mastery of other subject material such as history or geography or math or....
