I believe that all nurses have their little stash of medication (not always narcotics) that they use prn (whenever needed)

I am sorry to burst your bubble but my mom is an RN and I know for a fact they keep a log of the drugs and how much is used so no one can be taking them without someone knowing. It's a fact just ask.

Actually medication can be taken even when it's logged and it can be caught very quickly if you have good staff who do their job because that is a situation that is occurring at the RMC right now. Same as with nursing home and even physician's officed who pass out samples..It is possible and DOES happen.

Well it's cause they aren't doing a good job at their own job then.

Sometimes nurses can steal drugs and all of the required logging or counting systems they have in place are also still correct. If they have a patient who doesn't pay attention or ask questions about their medications or have a confused and disoriented patient they take advantage of that and what they do is when it's time for that medication they take it out just as they normally would, pretend to go give the medication (usually there are multiple medications being given at once so technically they are giving medications) they just don't actually give the one they want to take to the patient but keep it for themselves. They may get away with this for a little while but sooner or later there will be a pattern of patients reporting they have no decrease in pain levels after having their meds and they will have all had the same nurse which will then be asked for a drug test.
