Housing Market Kool Aid

My wife and I moved to the area a couple of years ago and have been stuck renting ever since. We were blown away at the cost of real estate here as compared to Oklahoma City. No offense but, you really dont get much of a house here for 200k. At that price, all the house here is missing is the crime scene tape! We've heard it's all about "location" since we're 2hr from DC, the beach etc. This excuse makes us laugh quite frankly. How does that justify having substandard housing (as compared to the rest of the US) priced so high? What are we missing here? There are "some" decent jobs here & "some" ok schools but we mostly hear, dont live in Petersburg, Hopewell, etc. Colonial Heights gets praised for its Chesterfield school system but, how do folks in that county justify 250-300k for houses built in the '60's and less than 2000sqft? Prince George...Good schools, acreage and.....? We see what we would call the standard/normal house in PG going for 300k+. WoW. Really not seeing the value. Old, small houses with almost no yard will cost you 250k...Why? How? When did a "quarter of a million dollars" become a good deal? LOL. Looks like we'll rent for awhile longer and if the folks that set these overinflated prices continue to provide the kool aid that others seem to be drinking plenty of around here - we'll go back to the midwest where you definately get what you pay for and that doesnt include crime scene tape!
IF someone can enlighten us to the situation here please do so, we'd love to finally get it.
