Having read what was said above, I completely agree.

However, also have personal experience with Dr Johnson and Dr Crace, and they are actually very good at what they do. You may hear rumors about high complication rates, however, their complication rates are the lowest of any doctor at HRMC that has surgical priviledges. So, my patients overwhelminly have been pleased. A few have had personality conflicts, but I have not had any complications personally with patients.

And before anyone starts stuff, I am neither physician, but do refer to them.

No.
I would recommend it only if you have between 30-50 lbs to lose. If you do some research, there are several studies which show the band fails after about 3 years. Also, ideally it is supposed to stay inside the body for life but even on the lap band's offical site they list it lasts about 7 years.
The doctors at ARH have done thousands of lapband surgeries. Do your research. Good luck.

What if you just dieted and exercised, instead of looking for a dangerous "quick fix"??? You would be more gratified if you "did it yourself".

In reply to misb5, complications happen from even the most minor surgeries.

In reply to "What if". Do you know the percentage of people who diet/exercise and are able to keep the weight off long term? Only 5%. At least with bariatric surgery many are expected to lose 60% of their excess body weight and keep it off long term. Weight loss surgery is not a quick fix. If it were a quick fix people would have the surgery and never have to worry about gaining weight back, never have to worry about the mental issues involved. Also, since I have been there myself, having surgery is a huge decision in itself. It's an entire lifestyle change, and it is only a tool to help in losing weight. It's not easy. We have to take vitamins for life, have yearly blood draws and I still struggle to this day with certain issues.

Again, the surgery is ONLY a tool. It is up to the person who underwent surgery to work the tool and be successful. Just like those who take diet pills or any other aid in losing weight, the surgery is the same way.

If you've never been there, never struggled with this decision or had weight issues then its easy to call it the "easy way out". I promise you, it's been hard work.

Are you stupid ??? I would not go to HIGHLANDS for this surgery !!!! You need to go to some one that dose this all the time do you think you are the only one that has issues ????? The majority of us do at one time or another 1/2 of my life I have been fat I am now an older woman struggleing with diabetes and weight but I have never given up !!!! even when I was thin my weight was always on my mind . I have lost 35 lbs in the last year it takes hard work and determination to make the right decisions and I know gastric by pass is the only right decision for some people . BUT NOT AT HIGHLANDS !!!! Go where they do his every day !!! you stand a better chance of walking away !!!!

GO to a Doctor that specializes this is not simple surgery it is complicated surgery and a big hospital that is use to dealing with these patients will know complications if they arize and you will not be left to your own resourses I know you heard about the patient at highlands that call 911 for help to go to the bathroom it was true a well known doctor in town was her doctor and 911 responded before the nurses at highlands if you are haveing something simple done go to highlands but not for this .

Why are you so hostile? I realize you are clearly angry but I agreed in a previous post that Highlands is not a good hospital for this.

Hazard ARH has two doctors who have done thousands of lap band surgeries. And FYI, complications can occur from any surgery. Anytime you go under anesthesia you run a risk of death. That's just how it is. Now, I certainly agree that one needs to choose a surgeon who is skilled. I don't think we should put down local hospitals who have amazing surgeons simply because it's a small hospital.

I don't feel like I'm the only one who has ever had issues and I sure didn't mean to portray that. I was just trying to help everyone understand how big of a decision it is to undergo surgery to lose weight and how it's not the "easy way out" Even after surgery you have the mentality of a "fat person" who wants food. Those are the issues I was talking about, among others.

Diabetes is rough, it tends to make it harder to lose weight but you've lost 35 pounds so congratulations on that.

You should go have lapband surgery at highlands sounds like you never tried and have a guilty concience . Every one knows what kind of decision it is but you . once you have been heavy you do have that mentality but you are stupid to assume you are the only 'one' and you don't read all the threads all the way through if you did you would not have started critizing me well I guess you are the only one

Look, I'm finished talking to you. I was speaking about me because I am talking about MY experience with it.
Let me give you the credit for being an overweight woman.*Clap, Clap* Women like us are a dime a dozen. By the way, I HAD surgery already. If you read my entire post that's exactly why I was talking about ME. I portrayed only myself because I can only speak for me.
Have fun living in dream land. Make sure you ASSume some more and fill in the blanks because it's clearly working for you. Again, I congratulate you on the 35 pounds, you should be less negative and more proud of yourself. Bye!!

Don't do it @ HRMC!!!!! bad bad things have happened to alot of people who have let Crace and Johnson do this surgery (perforated bowls), i know of 6 people who almost died because the surgery wasn't done properly, in turn they were sent to Cinncinati, Louisville and UK to fix the mess up's ...My advice is to go to Kings Daughters or Saint Mary's!!!!! stay away from HRMC!!!!!

I had my gastric bvypass done at KDMC by Dr Tompkins. The docs here at HRMC are not fully trained and have only performed this procedure a handful of times. Do not take a chance with your life and health.
