I have been out of work for 3 years now,I have applied for work all over.I have lived in this town all my life.Married with 3 children.I am a home owner FOR NOW.I keep hearing about all these kids, getting jobs at DPI,Great North foods, and other places around town.Im 52 years old,is it to OLD?I would like to know this ,what do these young kids have invested in this community? And do you think at there age they will stick around ? or is this just a stepping stone till they leave and go someplace else to make more money. They have nothing to loose.Nothing invested,But yet we can not get work.THAT IS AGE DISCRIMINATION no matter how you look at IT.People with families and bills to pay should get employment FIRST.

oh gosh, let me see. First off, you have to want to work....second, you have to change your attitude. What do "these young kids" have vested in this community? well...how about their future. Yes...you also have a family and future. There are jobs. And yes, I do admit that it sometimes depends on who you know. And this discrimination crap....you can flip burgers or stock shelves just the same...so go ahead and apply for any and all jobs that you can. We work hard for our money..nothing, absolutely NOTHING is given to us. We dont complain...why? BECAUSE! Go ahead and further your education...or even get a diploma or GED if you don't have one yet. The bottom line is get off your backside and get out there in the world and take a look at what there is for you. No one person is more special than the next. EVERYONE has bills to pay, not just those of us with families.

I was laid off From Thunderbay Manufacturing when th y shut down . I am now 63 and found a job with a cleaning company. I use the carpet shampooer. The young people respect me for my work ethics and they include me in conversations with them on life experience etc. What you gotta do is want to work. Not just get paid, but work, you should find a job. No exscuses, just work. 1 apply 2 wear good clothes to interview 3 never say bad things about anyone in interview. Remember, interview starts sometimes when you get out of your car. People watch you. 4 Show up on time or call.

If you want to find work, you have to see yourself as an employer does. What do you have to offer? Are your skills appropriate to the position for which you are applying? Can you talk about what you know and can do? Are you well groomed? Clothing clean and pressed, nails, teeth and hair trimmed? Do you stand and sit straight, shake hands confidently, look people in the eye? Do you listen carefully to questions and respond appropriately? Will you work any days and any hours? Have you takent advantage of opportunities to learn new things? Have you gone to the Michigan Works office and had practice interviews, is your resume current and is everything spelled correctly? What have you done that makes you unique-know yourself. Ask people who know you to honestly tell you what they think is the problem and shut your mouth and listen to them. Then think about what they've said and use their comments to make changes. R E M E M B E R There are many people that will apply and you must show that you are above them in experience, skills, attitude, knowledge, and willingness to learn.

I am in management and one of the first things I look at when reading resumes is if the person can spell. It may not sound very reasonable, but incorrect spelling gives the impression of being uneducated, thus making the reader "assume" that they don't have any valuable skills at all. Even if the opposite is true. Also - don't think that you're out of luck because of being a bit older than other applicants. Some employers are still looking for employees with "life knowledge" and common sense!!

Wow...It's nice to read a comment from a reasonable and intelligent individual. It seems at tho' civility on this site is lacking. Thanks for the thumbs up. Charger07 wrote: <quoted text> Well said. Try Tendercare, or the other nursing homes. What about that bp station that fired that girl who Beat up the little boy? Did they fill her spot? I always see new people at Neiman's. The wages may not be great, but its a start.
