How about teachers in the state that have not received a raise or bonus for years? Why are they always left out?

If you want to know why teachers are not getting pay raises, start asking these questions. How much money is given to private corporations to run schools that used to be run by teachers and school boards? How much money is given to private corporations to create required curriculum that used to be created by teachers?. How much money is spent on standardized testing? If the DOE stopped these failed reforms that did not involve teachers in their development, you might be surprised by how much money is available for schools.

helps that the state has one of the stingiest per capita medicaid expenditures in the country (48th), and one of the lowest per pupil education expenditures after adjusting for regional costs

Huck is right, and Virginia ranks 43rd in treatment dollars for mental Health and Substance abuse and not much higher in support for those who have intellectual disabilities. The Governor with support of the Republicans in House of delegates wants to restrict Medicaid expansion, keeping everything as it is. And then of course is the underfunded public school system that thinks teachers should work for 80% of other states Salaries. Many of the comments here think that there are no consquences for all of this lack of care and concern for others, and for quality of workforce (education) of course it seems a lot of them are products of this system, so its really no surprize that they do not want others to have education and health care and to be successful in better paying employment. That is the shadow side of life in Virginia, many pockets of rurual residents living in ignorance, poverty and apparently a lot of fear and jealousy... SAD, SAD, SAD

The timing of the announcement is really funny. I had to laugh. But, I'm so glad and thankful for this raise. As a state employee, I've always felt like the red haired stepchild, every time the state was in trouble. I and my fellow state employees were the first to feel the heat. Now, I can't wait until we get back to merit raises. Not all state employees are created equal. Those who work hard should not be given the same raise as those who do not.

I thank President Hussein baraq o bamah. I thank him for bringing his racism and hatred of white folk, him and his blushing bride, into the White House and further splitting America. I'm waiting for your emperor to finally call his goon squads out after declaring martial law. Which side are you gonna be on, Teresa, America's or Emperor and Empress' Hussein baraq o bamah's side? Us or them? ya don't have to pick now but don't take too long. Ya don't want to be forced to pick when it hits the fan. One day you'll be forced to pick between Eric Holder or Randy Weaver. Don't wait too long! I think you'll choose Eric.

With cities, most of the time there is a lack of money, it is caused by spending more than they have, output greater than input. My dad taught me if you make a hundred dollars a week and spend a hundred fifty a week, eventually it'll catch up with ya.
