Westchester Commons has already ruined traffic. I used to have a nice drive through there now its heavy traffic all the time. More than likely you will see the shooting range and the walmart. Problem is that Walmart will not allow Target to have a store farther out then they have one. Rt. 60 and 522 will have a walmart but its probably 6 to 8 years out. I don't like the store to begin with but I do spend alot of time driving in to Midlothian to pick things up. I guess we will see what happens

I am not concerned about the increased noise levels. There will be a "plan" in place for that, as illustrated in the article above. What the majority of residents along the 711/522 corridor are most concerned with is the increased traffic level on roads that are already incredibly dangerous. There is very limited shoulder, limited passing lanes, and heavily wooded areas along both of these roads. There are accidents on an extremely regular basis. There is already a county task force devoted entirely to the issues surrounding 711 and the deadly accidents that occur on a basis that far surpasses that of other county roads. Increasing this traffic load for a purpose that brings absolutely no revenue and no increased tax base to the county is not only foolish from a safety aspect (which is the case no matter what), but it is foolish from a fiscal perspective as well.
Oh well... I, for one, will just be even more diligent and defensive as I drive this road daily.

“Common sense aint that common.”

Have you noticed all the strips across 60 measuring traffic? I have a feeling Rt. 60 could expect a new lane west & eastbound soon.

This is a letter written to Lisa Hicks-Thomas, by one of the residents of Powhatan county who has done significant amounts of community service for the area, including restoring Shiloh Baptist church:

Your citizen base is unanimously against this firing range project - The proposed site on Old River Trail is one of the most beautiful and historical roads in all of Virginia. It is anchored by two historic churches (Shiloh Baptist Church circa 1866 - one of the most historic and important churches in the Commonwealth and St. James Chapel circa 1880 - which has been restored into an incredible community center). Both have incredibly strong communities groups preserving these tranquil and important historic locations.

Safety Impact - In the short time I have lived in Powhatan there have been multiple prison escapes from 3 of the 4 prisons (Powhatan Correctional, Goochland Correctional, and Beaumont Juvenile have all had multiple escapes and they are all within walking distance to the planned firing range within 1, 2 and 3.5 miles respectively).

When a prison escape does occur, it strikes incredible fear into the surrounding communities. Incredible fear! Building a major firing range with firearms and ammunition within walking distance of these prisons creates a major public safety risk. It will be common knowledge within the prisons as to when the firing range is staffed and when it is not.

This is a recipe for disaster. I would like to understand why you support this when there are so many safer alternative firing range locations that could be built or expanded. Just a few better alternatives include Fort Pickett (with the development of the Virginia State Police driver training course with overnight barracks) as well as AP Hill, Quantico, and Brunswick Correctional Center sites all within similar driving distance.

There are over a thousand Powhatan and Goochland citizens that feel as strongly as I do and we collectively want to know why you support this firing range being located in this dangerous area. We would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at your convenience in one of our community facilities to understand your position, and to communicate our positions to you in this matter.

Your Solution Strong Alternative Locations - There are strong alternative locations for a facility of this nature including but not limited to Fort Pickett with the development of the Virginia State Police driver training course with overnight barracks as well as AP Hill, Quantico, and Brunswick Correctional Center sites, among many others.

Please do the right thing for your constituents and stop this project. Thank you.

To all who wrote negative comments about those who complained about the firing range:
Ha. They moved it to Nottoway, and its a win-win because Nottoway saw the firing range as an economic benefit, where as the location in Powhatan was given to the developers of the firing range by the Department of Corrections.

Where to start with the lies and errors of this "letter:
1. It is NEVER unanimous. In your eyes, perhaps, but I guarantee there are those that do not agree with you.

2. Safety impact. Are you truly foolish enough to think escaping felons would go in the direction were POLICE OFFICERS ARE SHOOTING? Or is it that you foolishly believe they store guns and ammunition there when it is not in use?

3. Just what kind of drugs is the writer taking and where do I get some?

4. Congratulations to Nottoway. You win over the idiots in Powhatan.
