Thank you for posting this. I received a call this afternoon. Zachary was my cousin's son. He was always such a sweet kid, and his mom loved her boys so much. Such a terrible tragedy and a parent's worse nightmare.

My daughter knew him too.. She is taking it hard. He and his family have been very kind to her. We are praying for you to Chad. I am greatful for the kindness of this family, and I am sorry for the loss to both families. This is heartbreaking.

D U I - When does it ever stop? What does it take to get people to understand the danger and stupidity? I CAN NOT count on TWO hands the friends, and family, that my family has lost, due to drunk drivers.

Gail Thomas & Dee Dee Johnson, and now Zach, the most recent, innocent victims of DUI offenders.

Yep. This is why every department should have a DUI task force and why the citizens of the city and the county should put pressure on their police departments to step up enforcement and put pressure on the DA's office and judges to prosecute accordingly.

No more pleading down to reckless driving. That is horse shit.

This is a prime example of why DUI drivers need prison time. Two lives taken by a selfish person.
And LOTS and LOTS of it. The problem is, the punishment is not severe enough. First offense is a slap on the wrist. I hear first offenders all the time getting off with nothing. They should be hit hard. That is the only way it will put a stop to it: make people not want to drink and drive.

My son also went to school with Zach. I think that if a fatality results from a drunk driver - it should be 1st degree murder. You know it's against the law to drink and drive and if you have a wreck and kill someone - then its murder

The young man driving the vehicle that hit Zach's car head on was driving my the son of a lawyer here in Douglas County. It will be interesting to follow this case. To my understanding the driver of the vehicle that hit Zach, is or was in ICU at Atlanta Medical Center or Grady. Hope he is alright. However, two lives have been taken at the hand of a DUI driver. Praying for all involved. I'm curious to see how this will play out with the DUI driver's Dad being a lawyer. He knows a lot of folks at that courthouse.

What is the name of the attorney. I would like to watch this unfold. My prayers are with Zach and his friend and both families. Zach's dad is a good friend of my husband. It is so very sad. I pray that the DUI suspect is found guilty and spends life in prison. DUI is against the law and the law need to serve justice for the victims and the families.

Okay.....here we go. The DUI driver "Cory" was wheeled into court Tuesday and given a $50,000.00 bond. He was also given house arrest, except for meeting doctor's appointments. I don't feel he should have been given bond. People, there are two lives and two families that are without each other. I realize that Cory's family is affected as well. However, a $50,000.00 is not severe enough to me. Also, prior to and this is public knowledge, Cory was at Taco Mac consuming alchohol hand over fist. He has also had a no show in court before. I just wonder if his father being an attorney is helping him scale by the process. If that would have been you or I missing a court date.........BENCH WARRANT FOR OUR ARREST !...you know I'm right on this one. I'm sorry for Cory. He chose to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. No one else chose to do so, only him. When is enough ENOUGH !? I feel the punishment is already taken a turn for the better of Cory. With the families without their loved one, I pray for justice.

I do believe you added the "consuming alcohol hand over fist" part. Cory will stand up for what he has done and take responsibility for his actions. There is no need to add your in-truth to the story.

I honestly do not know how John Freer (sp?) can sleep at night. Perhaps he should train his employees how to recognize "incognito" and steps for employees to take to refuse service and call a cab or the cops when a customer has had too much to drink.

Whoever served him those drinks at Taco Mac that night should be fired, if that is the case.

Yes, in the end the driver is responsible, but somebody should have stopped him. Friends don't let friends drive drunk.

.

Sorry, but I am not sorry for Cory. Because, like you just said, he chooses his actions. I, like you, feel like there should have been no bond at all. That is why this happens and will continue to happen. Dude should be sitting in jail and he is not. So people will continue to go to Taco Mac and get trashed and stumble out of the place and drive home: because you can hit a car head on, murder the occupants, but still sleep in your bed until the trail. Rest well man because two others are resting forever. Pissed? Yes, because I have driven Post Road at 0200 sober and that could have been me – or anyone else on here.

Until punishment fits the crime we will be talking about this same subject with different names when it happens again somewhere else in the county in ______(fill in the amount of time).

Were you there in the courtroom? Any remorse on his part? Did he speak? What is his excuse? Who is his attorney?

I don’t believe in frivolous lawsuits but I feel one against Taco Mac coming on if it can be proven he was overserved in the ‘Mac that night.

Sorry you feel the need to take up for the worthless bastard that killed those 2 boys. I was at my nephew's funeral, I know more than you realize.

Worthless Bastard? Judge not, lest you be judged!
It is a tragic situation and one that could/should have been prevented.
