I think people generalize too much about Wal-mart. I needed to purchase a router on Friday adn Walmart was the fastest best way for me to get what I needed. BestBuy wasn't a good option and the office supply stores around here are basically there to sell everyone over priced inkjet ink.
For what Walmart provides when people need it, they perform a valuable service. Did you know that Walmart is the largest grocer in the USA?
Why not look at Walmart for what it really is, a large repository of resources. If you don't want to shop there, don't. I like to know what is available and where so when I need something, especially something that might not be easy to find, I know where to get it.
I take some time once a year to wander around Lowes, Home Depot, Office Depot, Walmart, Sams Club, Target and other sources of goods and services to stay aware of what's available. I don't buy much, but I do know where to get it when I need it. Maybe that isn't "shopping." It is just "resource planning." So yes, I would miss Walmart. I just bought a kitchen faucet there that was not available anywhere else in Douglasville. They provide a service, and it isn't just low class people who purchase things from them, as some people seem to imply. I needed to purchase some custom blinds last year and Walmart was the only place I could order them within the project timeframe. To each his or her own.

If Walmart disapeared people wouldn't have it to kick around.
There are good and bad points to Walmart just as there is to anything.
Some people hate it and others love the place. You must admit that it is an example of the one of the greatest forms of ingenious capitalism.

It would be a bad thing because tons of people will lose their jobs. Walmart is a very large employer. They made not be high level finance exe or big time real estate moguls but they have a job that keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. I would hate to see that many people lose their jobs in times this hard.
