Avoid Medici Gallery in Del Mar. My boyfriend and I (new to the art world) were so excited to purchase our first 'original, signed Chagall lithograph'... which is what we were told...only to discover that it was nothing more than a nicely framed poster. The damage:$2,500.00. The store refuses to refund our money. After some research we discovered they have been recently sued for selling fraud artwork. Avoid the store. Buy your posters at Aaron Brothers and avoid being scammed!

Me and my husband bought what we were told a Salvadore Dali litho at Medici Galleria in Del Mar 10 years ago for $3500 only to find that it was a fake. The owner of Medici would not give us our money back two years later when we found out from an art appraiser that it was fake. Isn't this commiting fraud? Why would the City of Del Mar allow such criminals to occupy commercial space in their city? We should all call the news channel's trouble shooter Turko on them and expose them for the frauds they really are! Wonder how many other innocent people over the years they have ripped off???

The above comments are accurate. Medici sells flashy reproductions, at premium prices. Typical tourist trap kind of place. They are very good at throwing terms like "provenance" around; they will also tell you that "you need to make your mind up, as the item is going to go to auction tomorrow if it doesn't sell." I talked them down to $800 on my "Chagall." The frame was worth about $350 (based on framing work I had done in the past), so I figured I wasn't getting hurt too badly. The litho was a recent reproduction, worth maybe a hundred bucks retail, so they nailed me for about $350 of excess profit. In my opinion, they are scammers.

Also told that an item was going to auction in a couple of days if I didn't buy. Got suspicious when price was immediately reduced 75%. Glad I didn't bite.

The owners son took over and moved the business to New York as a private Gallery. The reputation is better as the father is now retired in San Diego. I actually bought some beautiful art pieces dated late 16th century, it was verified and I can see a true investment. But I agree the father was a crook.
