I've written a lot about this and you can find my essay here -- http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/animal-em... -- and some comments here -- http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/animal-em... --
This isn't about one's meal plan, it's about Bill and Lou

I really appreciate all of these exchanges and the personal emails I've received. In response to a very thoughtful note I received I'm sharing some of my response - the bottom line is that this is about Bill and Lou and not about one's choice about who (not what) they choose to eat ... I wish them well .... so here are some snippets ...
___
let me say a few things up front to be clear on my position and general feelings ... i realize these are just snippets about which books could be written ...
- i love philosophy but i think some of the details of individual cases can be lost in the muddle/argument ....
- would people who choose to kill bill and lou make the same decision of they were dogs (the oxen are no less sentient ...)
- life is precious ...
- death is a harm to the individual who dies and to survivors who knew him or her ...
so ... i would give bill and lou the very best lives they can have and if one is in pain i'd do all i could to alleviate the pain - if VINE is not living up to their claims (as some have claimed but I don't know this ....) i'd find another place for them - in my opinion this is not a matter of one's meal plan - it's a matter of giving all individuals the very best lives we can - in this case they served you well and let's 'serve' them and let them live out the rest of their lives wherever it might be in dignity and peace and safety - and not serve them up as a meal - i really don't see this as a complicated matter at all - maybe some would say mine is a very simplistic idealistic view but that's how i see it - Bill and Lou should be placed somewhere where they can live a good life until death do them part - and then the survivor should be given the best life they can have -
i realize that some will agree and some will disagree but there are lives of sentient beings at stake here and this overrides this or that school of thinking ..

We are calling for a boycott of this small college. Sadly they will NOT listen to compassion nor do they have any empathy for these long time members of their college. That speaks volume to me

There is no need to slaughter these oxen. You may no longer need them, but others will rehome them. Why murder them, when there is a chance to let them live out the remainder of their days. Please show some compassion for these amazing creatures.

I find it odd that a college priding itself on it's Green MBA - sustainability program would eat its mascots. Eating meat is environmentally unsustainable. They should lead by example. Not only should they not be eating their animal friends, they should not be eating any animals if they are going to practice what they charge students to listen to them preach. In the spirit of full disclosure, I have not examined their curriculum. Perhaps they have some unique theory about planetary sustainability and the eating of meat. If so, they need to refund tuition to students taught that meat eating is environmentally sustainable. Ad for program:

Please choose compassion, the most important lesson that we teach on life aren't words, but actions. so please be consequent on what you do and teach respect for animals and all alive creatures.

Listen to us, We all love animals and believe that this world can go better. We are changing our habits to help and keep this paradise called earth.

Please let Bill and Lou go to the sanctuary and live with other rescued animals.

Why be remembered and the one that killed and served the college
companion animals ?

It is unbelievable to me that your option is to kill these two rather than have them placed with someone that will let them live out the remainder of their lives!

I have copied and reposted Joy Johnson's post.. This post says it all... How can a college supporting "green" , environmentally sustainable be a hypocrite to their own stated values and teachings. This is not only unethical but the way any animal is treated when sent for "slaughter" is beyond horrifying. That this college would support that treatment of a mascot is unimaginable. I wonder what hole in the sand their mind is in. If they follow through with this murder I for one will be standing in line to support a nation wide network to boycot their programs. How can they claim to be "educated" yet insensitive to honoring their mascots lives.

WHY IS THIS COLLEGE SO SET ON KILLING THESE ANIMALS,IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE WHEN THERE IS A PLACE THAT WILL TAKE THEM AND KEEP THEM SAFE.WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE RUN THIS COLLEGE,IT IS HARD TO BE NICE WHEN THEY WANT TO KILL ANIMALS THAT DESERVE TO LIVE.WHAT A SHAMEFUL PLACE.IF THIS IS HARD TO READ YOU MUST BE FROM THIS COLLEGE.

Please do not let the oxen be taken to slaughter, they will be frightened. It is barbaric to kill. Please let them go to the place of safety.

Dear Sir,

Please spare these animals, you dont need to eat them and after their many years of service surely they deserve to go to a safe sanctuary for their retirement? look at the loyalty and trust these animals have in you, are you and the college really willing to break that trust and faith in your good selves for the sake of a principle? or just to make a point? would not the point be better emphasised by allowing these wonderful animals to have a safe and happy retirement.

Show the world you have a conscience and that you have compassion and care. Slaughtering these animals would simply show the opposite and show the college in a very poor light, a place people with love, compassion and animal welfare at its heart is much more likely to attract students and the parents of students than one with a poor image of compassion and no conscience to the animals that have served it so well in the past.

What treachery lies within? I be-seech thee sir be the hero not a villain, spare those precious lives.

Please do not eat these beautiful, harmless animals. I will personally be happy to contribute to their future well being, as I'm sure many others would be. They obviously can live out their lives peacefully in a sanctuary and it will draw no future resources from your institution. Why would you prevent this? Please let them go to live out their lives in peace.

We are looking at colleges right now. Green Mountain has been marked off our list. My son has advised he has no desire to attend a college where they murder animals. If the school administration demonstrates NO compassion for innocent animals, how can we assume they care about his education and his well-being attending the college? Our choice is to give no further consideration to Green Mountain. And, since we have many friends who sons/daughters are also seniors, we have notified them of this senseless act of killing these two animals. They have also deleted Green Mountain off their list of potential colleges. Green Mountain could offer free college education and we will not chose this college.
