I have a special affection for octopuses and I love the fact that the Poulsbo Science Center is introducing children and other people to these fascinating animals. However, I have some concerns I would like to express.

The first is that the last time I was there the aquarium the octopus was being held in was way too small for the animal and did not provide it a chance to hide if it became stressed. Is there any way the Science Center can work towards getting a size-appropriate tank for the next octopus it has on display?

The second concern I have is about whether the octopuses that are helping educate people are getting enough intellectual stimulation. It is well known that octopuses are exceptionally intelligent and some even die from boredom. Even if one doesn't die, boredom is a form of torture (well documented) that is easily avoided.

The third concern I have is about Bob's ability to take care of himself after he was released. He was caught in the wild and obviously hunted and hid well enough to survive when he was small, but this animal's life span is 5 - 6 years. He was in captivity for approximatley 20% of his life span - which would be about 15 to 18 years for a human. And because of the amount of size he put on during that time, obviously his stint at the Science Center was during a developmental period. Is he still capable of taking care of himself? Are his hunting skills, his ability to recognize what is edible and what is not and his ability to choose safe hiding places quickly atrophied? Is there anyway to know? Is anyone keeping an eye on him to find out?

All that said, I love having a local octopus where I can go visit it - especially if these concerns can be resolved.

These are all good questions but I doubt you will ever get any answers. The Science Center is a mystery. In Poulsbo, if your Great Grandmother was not born here, you are not allowed an opinion.
