everyone knows of the problems in the city with regards to the parking!
it is a crime to say the least.
rip down buildings and put parking lots there, buy lots and put parking lots in,ect.
there is not enough business here to support the amount of parking lots.
then you have meters;
parking meters in PUBLIC areas like the courthouse.
the lot at the courthouse is PUBLIC property and the citizens should not pay to do any business in that PUBLIC building.
signs;
there are signs posted in lots downtown however they are the wrong signs.
wachovia bank lot for instance;
"for tenants only" does that mean for people doing business in the building or for the employees of the business's?
its a $25. ticket to go into the building and do your business there!
and then you have a maintanence man for that building who calls you repeatedly cursing and yelling at you.
HOW does he get your name and phone number?
the police wont tell you who wrote the ticket!
the city streets wont tell!
so its a national secret!
just pay the ticket your told; and if you dont it turns into a $71.50 fine at judge reilly's office.

is pottsville trying to outcast everyone?
trying to make it impossible for people to park?
are the city officials that greedy?

put your comments in; because the city is reading the blogs.
they have nothing else to do; right?
the residents of this city need to ALL stand up to these officials and say "thats enough" take out your meters and open all the lots to the general public or put gates on them.

common knowledge is that im running for mayor again; and it is on my agenda to have this issue taken care of.
public buildings will have NO meters;
parking lots will have NO restrictions except if they are privately owned AND correctly signed.
we need more business's and less greedy officials.
and again why do the officials and police park for free at any meter or on any lot?

thats a damn good point! public buildings are owned by the public. so as mayor will you give refunds to the people who were forced to plug those meters?
or to the residents who had to pay to park in front of thier own houses?
if we the people own the building we should own the lot as well, so will we see a share of the money collected from all these meters?

i dont think when liptok gets in as mayor he can go backwards in time, he cant refund anything in the past, its a matter of changing the present and the future.
but its a good election issue.
and its true that cop cars and elected officials park wherever they want for as long as they want, without paying or getting a ticket.(above the law or protected)?
lets see what happens in the election;
and then get the city affairs taken care of. but it wont happen with the current administration.

If you lived in Pottsville you would know that a good majority of our historical buildings are being torn down to make new parking lots. This has been going on for a while. Since I moved to Pottsville in 1993, 14 buildings on Centre St. alone were torn down, to make parking lots. Centre St. is our downtown business area. However, you CAN'T PARK in ANY of these lots. You have to rent them, put money in the meter, etc. The parking lots should be posted in some fashion to let you know if it's monthly rental.
Wachovia Bank parking lot is an example. The signs that are posted in this lot are very confusing. Building tenants-meaning businesses within the Wachovia Bank building-however that isn't the case. It's supposedly rented spaces, but no numbers on the spots, no signs saying monthly rentals, permit parking, etc. You park there you get a $25 ticket. When according to the sign your punishment is "towed away at owner's expense". Not ticketed and or towed!!
Due to the parking dilemma in the downtown I personally will NOT do business with ANYONE in the downtown EVER AGAIN! In case you're wondering, yes I received the citation previously mentioned!!!
The city officials and the older residents all lament about our downtown becoming a ghost town, the reason that is happening is because of the parking fiasco.
New stores are going to the malls, or outside of the city so they have convenient, FREE parking for its customers.
Once again it's the city officials' fault because if this city weren't mismanaged (local government union workers, pay, benefits) the city wouldn't have to RAISE MONEY through paying to park!!

Here's an idea, tare down the crappy old buildings that the city owns from back taxes and use the lots for free parking ! It wouldnt cost the city much money at all. Use the scatch your back method and make some good changes. If the city where to consider trading one of these buildings for the demo work and parking work I know there would be contractors who would be interested. There are many programs like this here in Durham NC. I know if it works here it surly would work there. an eye for an eye so to speak. Hows trhat for an idea. Another would be for the city to allocate the same run down buildings that make the city look terrible to a contractor to help make the city look better, maybe even help the needy with new affordable housing. Yes I am Palladian as well and yes I am a contractor. Do I have a financial interest, yes and thats why I am down here where the city looks great and business is booming. I would like nothing better but to come home and help Pottsville. Vote Liptok at least he would consider changes that would help the city and its people without using the same old people who kick back money to the same old people!! Now you got me going, I could post about 600 more ideas to make the area better!

parking meters are a way for a city to produce some revenue; however; they should be regulated too certain areas and not forced upon a community.

parking meters at a public building such as the courthouse or library with out the express permission of the pubic to put them there is violating the peoples rights (to vote) and thier right to access a public facility.

putting meters in front of peoples homes is another issue;

then again enforcing the parking meters in the downtown area is another issue;
some people like pat murphy can park at a meter all day and not get a ticket; it also ties up the spot for any potential customers.

people working in stores who park at meters all day and feed the meter is another issue;

police cruisers parking at meteres for an hour or more:

people parking in handicapped spots who are not handicapped;

this is an ongoing issue that there is no one overseeing and regulating.

Yes, I know that! However, they are always full and if you're going to be down there for a doctor's appointment of business meeting guaranteed you'll be there MORE then 1 hour! So, you park in the lot for the building you're going to and get a ticket???? The lot is marked for that specific building, the spots are NOT marked as permit parking, monthly rental NOTHING-yet you get a ticket!
Doesn't matter anyway I don't patronize anyone downtown anymore! The businesses lost my money! That's a shame because they have to pay the ungodly taxes, fees, etc to be in the city, however I WILL NOT SPEND MY MONEY THERE!!!!

The city has ample REVENUE with the taxes, fees, etc that it collects! If they didn't have union employees to pay the union pay and benefits to, they wouldn't need the additional revenue of $.25 per 1/2 hour times ?# of meters in the town!!!

The city workers should receive the SAME pay and benefits everyone else receives!! The city council should operate within it's TAX INCOME-without tax increases-if they can't they should cut back on the number of employees, benefits and pay scale!!! Just like everyone one of us here who are on a limited income! We have to cut back on utilities, heat, gas, food, etc to make ends meet!!!!

Thats the point! The city police did NOT earn any right that the ordinary citizen did. The police "should have" a drivers license; Just like every one else.

a very good point brought up on spending;
the city seems to think that the taxpayers should foot the bill for everything they do or the city employees do.
like cell phones;
why are taxes being used to pay for city employees cell phones?
buy them and pay for them themselves!
if they are in an office then why do they need a cell phone? Use the phone in the office.
they are using them for personal calls that the taxpayers are footing.
The same applies for elected officials;
cars, houses, phones, boats, vacations, etc.

The buck stops at the city accountant and the city council. If they can not control these issues and are willingly contributing to the mayhem then they all need to be replaced and jailed.
Some one needs to step up and do something about it! some one needs to put a stop to it.
some one needs to take the reigns and "control" the spending and of course some one needs to over see the "earned rights" or priveledges that are being taken advantage of by city employees.

If the police are parked at a meter for a legitamate call; yes they have a right to park there free. However: if they are parked at a meter to go get food or run to a drug store or are with thier girlfriend; they are on personal business and NOT police business; they are NOT working they need to be paying the meter and docked for that time.
a grant was given to the city to put cameras in the cruisers; it will never happen; because then the police will have to do thier job and do it professionally.
Not that the cameras wont be erased or altered;
thats the mainstay here in schuyklill county.
