Canton taxi owner seeks expansion into Potsdam
Three-step plan: Canton businessman eyes Potsdam market

POTSDAM — A Canton man’s plan to increase taxi service throughout the region is racing full-speed ahead.

Eli Carrier, owner of Carrier’s Taxi Service, is hoping the village of Potsdam will give him the green light Monday for the first part of his three-step expansion plan.

He needs the trustees to approve a taxicab owner license, allowing him to pick up customers within village limits. The goal, Mr. Carrier said, is to expand his Canton-based business to Potsdam before eventually moving on to Ogdensburg and Gouverneur.

“There is a huge need for a taxi up here,” he said.“I just want to keep expanding and keep people employed.”

Mr. Carrier started his taxi service in Canton this past February. Since then, he and two part-time employees have been chauffeuring customers around in black SUVs.

But the goal has always been to expand, he said.

And Mr. Carrier has been saving his pennies in preparation. The taxi business is an uncertain industry, he said, and he cannot afford to gamble by borrowing money for the upgrade.

“I have had to save and save because you’re not guaranteed any money at all,” Mr. Carrier said.

For $5, customers can hitch a ride anywhere in the village of Canton. But his service doesn’t stop at village limits.

“Syracuse, Montreal, it doesn’t matter. I go anywhere people need me,” he said.

It’s the university students, he said, who are the lifeblood of his business. But it is his 24-hour service that has pushed him over the top.

“I don’t know any other taxi out there that runs 24/7,” he said.

Mr. Carrier said there is a built-in customer base in Potsdam with the universities.

“We already are running back and forth from Canton to Potsdam anyway,” he said.

If approved, Mr. Carrier will be Potsdam’s second taxi service. Earlier this year, Thaddeus B. Broughton took over ownership of Potsdam Taxi from its longtime owner, the late George F. Regan.

With the move, Mr. Carrier said he will have to hire at least two full-time drivers to keep up with the extra business.

“My business will help keep guys employed and keep people busy,” he said.

By this time next year, Mr. Carrier said he hopes to have completed his expansion, having set up businesses in four areas around the north country.

Great news!!! You may think so but town leaders need more facts.

Some questions that will arise.

1 Is this a legal company?
2 Does company have a DBA Lic from StLawCo?
3 Does company have Lic to operate from the town?
4 Will the company employ people under NYS Dept of Labor Laws?
5.Most people are unaware of special labor laws forbidding sub contracting of Taxi's.
Most companies sub contract to drivers which is illegal in NYS
