That is a very disappointing development! You would think they had the competence to get some DNA that would implicate the villain in this tragedy. Fingerprints on the screen, etc. Something?

A lot of parents can now begin to worry about their own kid's safety in Potsdam. How can the chief of police make the statement soon after, that the kids are as safe today as they will next week, etc.?

I think people need to start being extra cautious and do everything you can to know where your children are at all times (althou it appears that in this case the parent knew where her child was). I think the police at least need to make some sort of statement about the nature of this if they do in fact feel it was someone that was involved with the family or of in fact their is a random killer in our community. I realize they can't just point fingers with out the evidence but there has got to be some sort of an answer to this matter.

Potsdam police still investigating murder of 12-year-old, report no new information

Monday, November 7, 2011 - 2:17 pm
POTSDAM -- Village police said Monday say they have nothing new to report about their investigation into the Oct. 24 murder of 12-year-old Garrett Phillips in the Market Street apartment where he and his mother lived.

The police investigation has so far apparently turned up insufficient evidence to charge anyone in the case. At last report, police were waiting for results back from the forensics lab in Albany to see if any solid leads were to come from that.

Police officially declared the death a murder after receiving initial autopsy results more than a week ago.

Garrett had reportedly gone home to the apartment after school on Monday, Oct. 24, to change clothes. At 5:10 p.m., a neighbor called Potsdam police, saying a loud noise had been heard coming from the apartment, followed by moaning.

Police found Garret alone and unconscious. Efforts to revive him at Canon-Potsdam Hospital did not succeed.

Police say they are following up on whatever leads have been developed, and are interviewing several people in the case. They also have asked for the public's help, hoping to hear from anyone who might have information useful to the investigation. One evening, they set up a stop on Market Street near the apartment building and passed out flyers asking for information.

The day after the murder, 200 classmates, teachers and others held a candlelight vigil at Kingston Middle School, where Garret was a student reportedly well-liked by everyone.

Unbelievable that a young boys life was taken in the middle of the day in an apartment complex and no one saw anything at all. I for one know I am scared for everyone. I haven't been able to sleep good at night since this happened, and refuse to let my child out of my sight.

They haven't received the DNA evidence back from the crime lab......be patient. They have nothing new to report just yet. This can take weeks to come back. Everything needs to be in order so the person that murdered this child cannot be acquitted. Everyone is anxious for info. but please just continue to keep garrett and his loved ones in your prayers

Fingerprints on a screen? Really? You honestly think a screen would have fingerprints on it? And "Wow" is right. Crime lab evidence takes time. It's science, unlike your mouths that just continue to flap in the wind.

Take it easy Yup, everyone is waiting but also very worried. There is no need to get this forum hostile again, so please try to be decent and understand the reason for this blog is so people can vent about their concerns.

Thank you Hope. That's what happens after the forum runs smoothly for awhile. I'm lucky I wasn't called an idiot for suggesting the rim of the damaged screen just might contain a finger print or two...

They know who did it. They just need time to get the proper evidence so they can make an arrest.

I think people are forgetting that we are nervous and have a right to feel that way. Many of us have young children and are concerned for their safety. Even though the police say there is no threat how can you be sure when they have no person of interest or suspects. Also from the last news article realeased could be interperated as the evidence/DNA that was sent was insufficient. So people who are calling others "idiots" really come on everyone is entitled to their own opinion and their own fear of the unknow!

I wish people on these forums would use sound judgment before posting. The news article does not say there is insufficient evidence in this case, it states there is insufficient evidence to "charge someone" as of November 7. There is plenty of evidence in this case and without a doubt, once the Crime Lab results are in, which will link through DNA a person to this crime, there will be an arrest. The NYS Crime Lab takes 7-10 working days to process one case and that is if it is the first on the docket. We don't know if there were other cases ahead of this one after Court-ordered DNA was collected on the 28th of October. No conspiracy theories; no gallant cover-ups, just a methodical process that takes longer than a one-hour CSI episode with a bigger goal than a mere arrest: we all want a guilty verdict to stick.
