Hey there I am wondering if anyone has any insight on what the best gym is in Potsdam and if any of these gyms have trainers. I am loooking to get into shape but want to do it the right way. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I go to the Body Shop and love it. There are a couple of really good trainers there, great classes, it's incredibly clean, up-to-date (machines are never broken), friendly and really reasonably priced. If you go in the a.m., there are always free machines. We are lucky to have such a great gym in the area.

I would start with Issiah -- he works there during the day and teaches some of the courses and is a trainer as well. He can also direct you to some of the other certified trainers on staff and those who do so on a consulting basis. There is also a challenge program that one of the members started that includes diet, exercise and a support group. Good luck!

The SUNY Potsdam Gym charges $120 per year and isn't run by criminals like the body shop. They have trainers to help you with anything. You get access to the pool and field house along the your gym membership.

Dear SUNY -- the SUNY Potsdam gym is often very crowded so I offered up my own experience having belonged to both SUNY and the Body Shop. I pay $32/month at The Body Shop and have never had to wait for a machine. And I, for one, believe people should be given a second chance for errors in judgment and I don't like running people's names through the ringer (particularly since I am not perfect either).

My wife was a member of curves when it was open. The people at the body shop offerred to pay her cancellation fee and give her a discounted membership to join body shop. They also asked her to secretly recruit others to do the same.
She's tried the body shop after curves closed but is much happier at SUNY Potsdam.

Dear SUNY -- if a gym agrees to absorb a cancellation fee if a person quits that gym and joins theirs, it is not a criminal act or a "secret" illegal act. Gyms in other areas that compete in larger markets have been doing that for decades openly as part of their marketing and sales efforts (they even advertise it on television). I doubt seriously people at the Body Shop said, "Shhhhh....go get your friends at SUNY and we will secretly pay their cancellation fees." They can say that loud and proud as it simply means they are able to give the new member several months of free membership once the fee is paid off. Give me a break -- you are trying to paint people broadly as criminal when you are simply not very business-savvy. The person who started this forum simply wanted some info and options. I have belonged to three gyms in the area and my favorite is The Body Shop for all the reasons I stated.

I didn't say their business practices are criminal. It is a fact that the body shop owner is a criminal. Look it up and read carefully.
It's nice that you like it there. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I would appreciate it if you respected my opinion of not doing business with dishonest people who have served time in prison.
Thank you for pointing out the fact that who ever started this thread (not forum) was looking for different "info and options." This is a forum where different opinions come together.

It's normal to sweat at the gym, after all, we are exercising. But come on people, it only takes one apple to spoil the bunch--and that's a person who reeks like a rotten onion and stinks up the whole gym, and makes my nostril hairs curl up and burn.
It's like the same tube socks have been worn twice in a row, then turned inside out and worn twice more, and the armpits are so ripe it's not funny.
The other day I was on the treadmill and the chubby girl next to me had severe crotch rot wafting over my way, and it smelled like she needed a follow-up wipe, so I had to press the stop button and get out of there before I puked.
Please be considerate of others, and bathe daily, and wash your clothes after sweating in them.

I would not say that the body shop is reasonably priced. It's very expensive and it doesn't feel like a gym with their low ceilings and tight equipment.

It's funny- I only pay $20 / month at SUNY Potsdam and I've NEVER waited for a machine! Plus the gym is very spacious, has a great energy to it and I get a great work out! Never again Body Shop!

it really depends on what you want to do. if your looking just to lose some weight/get in shape, buy some workout DVD's and do it from home. if you want to bulk up go to state because they have way more equipment. i prefer working out from home because i don't have to worry about the bad eggs ruining my experience. plus i prefer showering in my own home. thanks.
