Ok so I visited the Humane Society's new and improved building that is more animal friendly. LMAO what a joke. As I walked through the "new" building I see about 85-90% of the new area seems to be offices, meeting rooms, and bullshit areas. Add on top of the new area being non-animal friendly the staff is completely clueless. I walked in to see what animals are around and the 3 ladies up front were to busy bashing other workers I just proceeded to walk around. This animal shelter is money greedy and NOT for the good of animals!!!! They also raised the fees to adopt animals just to cover the cost of this "animal friendly" building. BULL SHIT...TOTAL BULLSHIT

I walked into the Humane society, and I am an angry moron, so I made a bunch of snap judgements about the new facility. Now I am posting them to Topix.

Since I had been in there for three minutes I know more about the way the new building should be set up than the people who work and volunteer there.

I agree with Potsdam guy ,, that place is a joke.. More office space and still the same tiny area for the animals... I wonder what dr maresca thinks after donating alot of money into that place for the animals , instead just made more offices and a conference room for the works " or as they call it a get to know the animal area" what a joke

I hope that you didn't leave without bringing home an animal. Don't let them continue to suffer as a result of poor human management, they had nothing to do with the construction of the new biulding. If anything, leaving an animal behind to exist in conditions that you deem completely unacceptable makes you just as much of a big mouth, idiot windbag as those employees you get a hard on complaining about. Maybe the place does suck, and the building was a waste of your hard earned tax money, but the animals had nothing to do with that. They spend their short miserable lives trying to walk around and exist in cage only slightly bigger than they are. Think of that as you lie in your warm comfy bed...think of the sounds and the smells that these animals are exposed to and the fear they must know all too well.

Kudos to you for making the trip to the shelter, most people don't even get that far. I commend you for that. I only hope that you didn't refuse to bring home an animal like you planned becuase you didn't like the way the new building was set up. We brought two feline brothers home from a shelter 9 months ago and couldn't be happier about the decision. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the shelter after nine months but those two little kitties have made our world an infinitely better place!

I agree with the previous poster, you made a snap judgement based on being there a matter of minutes. They do a lot for the animals that you wouldn't even know about. Why don't you try volunteering your time there if you are so concerned the animals aren't getting the treatment they deserve.

The reality is even the new facility is too small to handle all the animals that come through there. And probably part of the reason for raising adoption fees was to weed out those who make snap decisions, much like yourself, who turn around and dump the pet or place it on Craigslist a few days later.

In my case I thought I was doing the right thing and purchased a 40lb bag of dogfood. After I lugged it into the building, I'm told they don't use it or need it. They GIVE IT AWAY to people who have pets.WTF??$25 to give it away? There won't be a next time..

I walked around the building and you are right I was there only a couple of minutes because that's all it takes to walk around and see the animals.

I am glad to see that "I am an angry moron" can at least admit he is an angry moron!

I think what they do there is a great thing for the animals but when you are raising however much money it was for the addition to house more animals it wasn't anything spectacular.

"Potsdam guy"... Were you interested in the new building or animals?
Previous posters are correct...its about the animals, not the poor spending.
An attitude like yours, its better off that you didnt adopt.

First off... tax dollars did not pay for the new expansion. Secondly, what do you want for an animal shelter? The cats have more space and an outdoor area to use. They added one office and a medium sized room for training, etc. The old part of the building is now used for the vets office and to house animals that are not ready to be adopted. If you are disgusted by the amount of space, blame inflation. A million dollars doesn't get you what it once did. And did you try to talk to the staff or just complain about them. I've always found them helpful and friendly... and I adopted one dog and two cats from there before the addition.

If you are interested in helping out, don't just buy something and take it there. See what they need. They use a good quality food and it isn't good to switch up a dog or cats food. Don't go away pouting because they don't use the kind of food you brought...

I just see a lot of pouty, childish, kids posting here. It's time for people to grow up and stop tearing each other down over stupid, petty, differences.

to jtc- thanks for the intelligent insights. i also have been in the facility numerous times- its always fairly clean under the circumstances- they do a good job given what they must deal with on a daily basis. the old part of the shelter is used for numerous needed purposes. in a perfect would we wouldn;t need places like this but we do. its about the economy with people dumping/surrendering their animals- abuse and neglect-so maybe people need to volunteer and learn about what the reality of a shelter is.it isn;t always a happy story or ending.

No one at the shelter would have told you that your gift was not wanted or needed. You gave the gift of food to another animal that needs it very much. A lot like our food pantrys. With the economy the way it is, some people really need some help during the winter months. Which is the gift that keeps pets in their loving homes rather than being dumped off along side the road or surrendered to the shelter. So on behalf of the dogs and cats, I thank you very much for your generosity.

What you need to do is contact the Ogd. shelter in 10 days to see if your dog is still there. Usually if a dog is not adopted in 10 days it is euthanized. Potsdam SPCA is a No Kill Shelter and they have a huge waiting list for dogs and cats to be brought because of that reason. And if you were to walk in to the shelter you would see no purebred dogs. Please get your facts straight.

I am so upset by the negativity of the postings finding fault with the shelter. Walk in the shoes of the people who work and volunteer there... sometimes they are covered in pooh, sometimes blood and never do any of the people say I CAN'T DO THIS. I have seen volunteers buy what is needed for the shelter because there isn't enough money to buy the extras. I have seen the staff and volunteers cry at the condition of some of the sweet animals surrendered, brought it, dumped because someone just didn't want them anymore. I have seen the tears of joy as animals are adopted, and I have witnessed these same people pull out their check books and pay for surgery that some animal needs and the owner can't pay for. I myself have four beloved dogs from the shelter, I find the shelter to be a refuge for many creatures. Each animal is loved there, each is cared for, and that is the purpose of the shelter. The shelter does offer food to people who can't afford it, just so they can keep their pets with them. Do we give because we want to hear how wonderful we are, or do we give because we are human beings and we care for each other and the animals who have entered our lives. You do not know what goes on, if you care, volunteer, if you care, stop and ask questions, if you care, be the change you want to see.

we got our dog at the potsdam shelter and we couldn't be happier. the staff were very friendly and helpful( and this was before the new addition). At that time space was very limited, but the animals all looked well cared for and kennels were very clean. I did not see any pure bred dogs, only mixed breeds for the most part. we had someone drop 5 kittens near our home this winter and called them to see if we could bring them to the shelter. not only did they accept the animals , they took them at a time when they were not open to the public. i think we should be happy we have the society as otherwise these animals would most likely be abused. also you have to pay a fee because they spay or neuter the pets, give needed vaccinations and even license the dogs right there before you can take them home. we love our Sparky (Lincoln...kennel name) and he is a big part of our family. lets give credit where credit is due.

so if people think the shelter is overpriced- go get a free animal out of the newspaper. then start the series of shots needed- then get the pet spayed or neutered. drive back and forth to the vets office burning up your high priced gas. then tell us which place is cheaper.no place is perfect- and anyone who says so is full of shit. speaking of shit- go volunteer and clean some up. its not a high paying job i bet.some people just like to be negative and bitch.

First of all I worked there over the summer and you have no idea how many animals come into that shelter. Scumbags drop animals off on the side of the road and expect the animals to fend for themselves or die. The Potsdam Humane Society takes in as many animals as they can. The place may be filled with gossiping and pathetic people but they care for the animals as much as they can. And for the offices one room is actually for students so they can become aware of the situation and the topic of the animals care. The vet there is spectacular at what she does she does nothing but cares for the animals. Alot of animals have been saved in the Potsdam Humane Society. Its actually funny how you people do nothing but bad talk the ASPCA but are you doing anything to care for the animals or saving them from death. I have adopted, worked and volunteered for this business, have any of you??? I agree some of the conditions could be better and the main employees could be more positive but I know that the people there that clean, feed, and care for the animals are magnifecent so I have nothing more to say other than get over yourself because i dont think any of you know the pressures of working there or the hard work that these people put into caring for these animals!!!!!!!!!

you guys who hate on the place and say that it was a waist of money do realise that there are places that take in dogs and then will just chain them to a dog house even on the coldest days of the year or keep them in a small dark room. and there is aria's that the public is not aloud to go to were they keep animals as well so dont even say that there is not new space.
