These hotels are going to see lots of business for graduations, parents weekends, alumni weekends, and moving in/out of the dorms. How do they plan to make money for the other 42 weekends of the year?

Those times you listed will make up the majority of their income for the year. I certainly questioned the big Comfort Suites in Canton but it is still going and pretty strong. The companies are not stupid. They will not put these big hotels here if they don't know they will make money. I'm sure feasibility studies have been done. Their interest is a very good sign for Potsdam... and finally some tax base to help.

you be surprised at the number of business people, college sport teams, utility companies that will use these hotels. Maybe this will increase tourism.

New hotels are good and all, but has anyone stopped to think how they will affect the Bed and Breakfasts already in town that count on the business to stay afloat? Might put the majority of them out of business... how is that good for the community?

Actually, quite a few folks prefer the intimate atmosphere of a B&B over chain hotels. Granted, there are some nightmare B&Bs out there, but the ones in Potsdam are not like that... they are not all created equal. A historic home is much better than a brand-new box of a building, in my humble opinion. My point is that these businesses are struggling in the current economy as it is without the competition that a chain will bring. That's a lot of the problem today, people don't stop to think about all the factors involved. The Village is so hot to get a chain hotel, but at what expense to other businesses that have fought to build themselves up and add to the charm of Potsdam? Just sayin'

I think you have responded to your own concern. The B&Bs in Potsdam are very nice and some people prefer to stay and a cozy historic home.

I prefer a nice hotel with a pool. No offense to B&BS but I travel with children. Hotel is much better for a family

survival of the fittest. maybe we should never let any new business come to town in fear of a mom and pop shop going out of business.
