Yeah I remember going there and coming home blood red with a bad sunburn! Oh the good ole days! Now kids don't have anything to do, it's no wonder so many get on drugs and get in trouble. It's really sad.

I agree with the kids not havin anything to do in this town anymore. It seems as though the city has taken away everything we had growin up, so there's nothin here for them anymore, so they go out...get into trouble. They aren't even allowed to cruise Chilly anymore. It's just really sad

The best summer I ever had was working as a guard in 84.

We lived in the city growing up and ole what a place this was..Sad that my teenage daughter didnt get to experience this wonderful pool. The swim dances on Friday Nights was the place to be. I can smell the chlorine now, Oh what fun summer nights, Sure do miss them. Portsmouth has really went down hill, sad to see a town that will probaly never recover! And there is no opportunity for our kids here. They have nothing to do in this town! Sad!

Found this in a random search. I can't find photos of the pool anywhere (aside from a horrible postcard) and I don't know if I have any anymore. Does anyone have photos they can scan?

Great place. When blacks started protesting there it was closed.

The city did not close Dreamland. The owner of the property and pool lived out of town and the maintenance and insurance costs were too expensive to keep up.

The city did not own it.

The owner did not live out of town but no the city did not own it. Nobody was going to it anymore. They could not operate it with out patrons. They offered it to the city but the city did not want to deal with the upkeep It is really a shame that it is gone. It was great socialization for us all. I spent every summer there. I wish my children and grand children would have had the same experience.

City did not own it. Owner sold after protesting and trouble kept many away. Just look in the Librarys micro-film. Back then blacks were called Negros in the articles.
