I know Im going to get alot of mouth because of this but maybe there is someone that can give me an idea. My water got shutoff today and I had to take my 2 children and me and my husband to my parents. For some reason our last water bill was 800.00 and we have no idea why. We even asked the water company and they had no explanation so it stuck us to pay it. Well Since I had the bill 3 months ago, I have paid 200.00 of the 800.00 bill because after I get done paying what needs to be paid and rent and so forth I am really broke. I work, My husband works, and we are both full time and having a really tough time. This has been so stressing to me. I need my water on and have no money what so ever.. And we really dont have anyone to help us. So is there any charities to help with this? With 2 children I really need my water on. I get no foodstamps because we are over income bracket, We get no assistance. Its just what we bring in and one of our children is in Diapers and formula so very costly. I just really need help getting back on my feet... Any suggestions?

Portsmouth Water Company will sock it to you. They are such crooks! I'm surprised they get by with what they do. Not to mention - they are ALL VERY RUDE. Especially the women you pay your bill too.

I recently moved and had my "services" shut-off and was told my water deposit would be mailed to me by check once the final meter reading was done and the cost deducted from my deposit, Well, fast forward about 3 weeks later, i received my deposit back but only got back $57.00 out of the $200 i paid up front. Take into account, i conserved with my water and had very little usage, except for when i cleaned, bathed, cooked, laundry and all that was minimal usage. I stayed at the place for 2 months but i know for a FACT i did not incur around $143 water bill.

Not sure how they get by with this but they do.

One thing is for SURE - They do NOT care about you and your family having no water. kids or no kids. Trust me they hear this all the time and even though most situations are indeed LEGIT - they could all care less, EXCEPT when it comes to YOUR money and taking YOU to the cleaners.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune!

I know when my friend was having a hard time she went to a church and got hers paid for. I'm not sure what churches to that kind of thing but it wouldn't hurt calling around to them. It also sounds like you have a leak. You should have the water company look and if it's not in your pipes in the house the water company should have to pay to fix it

Liston you said you pay rent. You need th have the owner have the house checked for a leak. If and when you find out what's leaking and fix it you can take your shutoff notice down and more than likely they will adjust it. Also sometimes the meter can be bad. Call the office where you pay the bill and ask to talk to the boss,he'll tell you the same thing I did. Don't talke to the woman at the desk as they are full of zhit.

. If it wasn't in her pipes the the meter wouldn't be running. You have a toilet running or a broken pipe or who knows, not hard to find out. Does someone else besides you live in the same house, just saying, you might be paying for someone else's water also. Lot of water going someplace.

There was a thread a while back about people getting over-charged by the Portsmouth City Water Dept. So i'd atleast raise an eyebrow their way.

Also, if you have a SLUMLORD (which Portsmouth is filled with.) then good luck getting them to do anything.

Find another place to rent....or make your landlord take care of the water leak. A church will help, but probably not to pay a water bill for a slumlord.

Call Children Services. Maybe they still have programs for this.

Good Luck to you. The water company is hard to deal with.

Something sounds fishy about this, because we're talking about a lot of water going someplace. Not just a drip. Should be easy to find.

Another poster made a good point. If there is a leak your landlord is responsible for the bill. You have to report a possible leak though. If they refuse to look for a leak pay a plumber to look and then subtract the amount of the service call from your rent. That is your right. In the end, the landlord will be responsible for all costs associated with the leak.
