PHS football, under the Clifford administration should be sitting on at least 2 State championships up to this point. I cannot beleive the talent squandered year after year after year. It is amazing to see the talented football players at Portsmouth, who dominate pee wee, dominate junior high and then get pushed around as varsity players. To allow this coaching staff to continue with their failed efforts of coaching a successful football program is rediculous. If Clifford loves PHS as much as he claims, he should recognize he is only hurting the program, and step down now. This should not stop at Clifford..The school board and athletic administrator needs to clean house and bring an entire new system to PHS. It is not going to work if Clifford steps down and they hire a Ted Newsome or any other of Cliffords clones. There is more talent at PHS right now than there has been for a long time and the longer Clifford is allowed to remain, the more talented classes he will ruin. I feel sorry for the junior class, the sophmore class, the freshman class and the junior high, who will be denied any future success if Clifford is allowed to stay. Has anyone seen the 8th grade play yet? My god, those kids are amazing! I can remember saying the same thing about the the junior class when they were in the 8th grade....get my point? For goodness sake, get a new coach, new program, get those boys in the weight room so they dont get pushed around by Valley, West, Ironton, Burg, not to mention the conference and lets give these kids a chance to be champions...

Portsmouth had enough talent to win multiple state titles.

I have been amazed how weak and soft their interior players have been over the past 7-8 years. They have had good playes (Codogan, Thompson, etc) but cannot put together a good line with such good bodies.

The SOC II should let Portsmouth in because they are irrelevant at this point.

It will be a long year for the Trojans. I see losses to West, Burg, Minford, Ironton, Gallia Academy, Jackson, Warren and Chillicothe.

Logan will be a coinflip.

Who is the strength and conditioning coach at PHS?

Surprise....Clifford is the strength and conditioning coach. He collects extra money for the title for a non-existant, irrelevant weight program. It is a shame.

Yes, football is SO important.

Way more important than the education of the students.

We should be so focused on winning, winning, winning. Let's not be concerned about the future of the students; afterall, public education is all about a winning football team.

Portsmouth can't brag on their academics either...year after year,,in academic crisis..maybe they should clean house in more than just the football staff.

Teaching them to fail to their goals by not preparing themselves must be your philosophy.

Look I own several businesses. I am not rich, but successful. Went to college, the whole nine yards. I learned as much in life through high school sports and beyond than I ever did in a classroom. I am not saying that football is more important than History or Algebra, but its a major part of 60+ kids life in Portsmouth so someone must make them into the best players they can be.

Obviously, that person is not Curt Clifford as we have seen time and time again.

Hearing that he is also double dipping for mediocre results as the strength and conditioning coach is also a major letdown, but makes sense when watching the team.

Portsmouth needs to worry about academics more than football. Football is just a game. These kids needs to get a education to prepare them in life for more than how to fill out a application for food stamps.

The best hope for these kids is to transfer schools, not go down with a sinking ship.

Yes, get these kids out of the new schools because the football team has a losing record!

It's about winning, folks! It makes Portsmouth, the coaches, the students and the superintendent look bad to lose games! Plus the students get bullied and picked on by students from other schools.

God knows that winning football scores are crucial on job applications and resumes.

If our football teams cannot win their games, the schools will crumble. Just crumble. So what about quality education; let's crank out more money for our football programs.

And the players should be on the team to not enjoy playing football; they are playing to WIN. There's no other reason to be on a football team.

You people make me sick! You are all just a bunch of wanna bees... How about a little support? I played under Coach Clifford and would not let any,and I mean ANY other head coach, coach my own son. For those who choose to send there kids to other schools, you should be ashamed! You are whats wrong with this program not the coaching staff. This entire staff loves these kids. they are not only coaches but mentors as well. If you feel this way then send your kids elsewhere. We don't need your crap, what we need is a little city pride and not all the know it all Friday night heroes you people think you are.. Get a life.

No real education in Portsmouth City Schools.

Education starts and Ends at Home.

Sports complex nothing but a scam of a few to make money. If it were not for the profit for local unelected leaders, you would have a mall in there. City donated them 200k to think about it. They took our 200k and said....screw you, as they have done for years. Can you say SOGP/Martings?

We need State Assitance in our City. ORC.

Who made the money and how? Who was going to put a mall there where the school facilities are built? I assume you have the answers, so we'd all like to know the details. It would be a public service to reveal this information in detail for the public good. With the Internet, no one has to rely on traditional media for publication of true information.

Yes, that's what I thought, but I would like to know concrete facts about this mall that he claimed would have been built in that location. Who, what, how....etc.

Blowing smoke. To put a mall in you need a good location which downtown Portsmouth is not. You need people who want to shop and spend money which this area has very few. And if any tax breaks are given to attract something that would help the economy then you get the idiots like Doug Deep & others crying about corruption. The new PHS & campus & sports complex is awesome. The area is lucky to have it. Now the school needs to bring in a new football coach & turn the program around like basketball program.

Biggest scam being pulled is Ralph Applegate...not only is he retired from the city school district, but somehow he has managed to be re-hired by the school board as the "Facilities Manager"...wtf is this...so he has sole authority to deny access to our kids who want to use the facilities...

He[[, even our own AD can't make the decision to use these athletic facilities without having to ask Ralph...experienced this first hand...don't believe me, ask one of the coaches...he runs that place like he owns it...

I don't blame Ralph...I blame the idiotic school board...they talk about making a change and head in new direction, so when Mr. Thompson passed away, thye decided to bring a retired administrator on board...some change huh?

Somebody might also want to look into the fine print of the "Clark Foundation" deal...you're telling me it's taken 4 years to get a softball field? A track? They were never given the entire amount up front...bits and pieces...underhanded selection of facilities...why a tennis court in Phase One? I don't know....perhaps a few board members had kids on the tennis team? Not that it wasn't needed...but why not have a softball field adjacent to baseball field? A lot of goofy things happening here...

Back to Ralph...this inept board needs to find a new project manager...and the people of this city who elect the board members need to change the leadership here...otherwise, this school system will continue to be a family affair...

Great post and spot on. The board is terrible but unless someone runs against the current members nothing will change. Speaking of a family affair how many Tom Smith family members work there? Answer? ALL of them! What a joke .

Don't let the discussion get away from the fact that Clifford must go. He may be well liked by the players and faculty,,,he may be a great guy. I am not doubting that..however, he is not a great football coach and he does not run a great football program. PHS deserves to have a great football program and has the athletes to do it. The program just needs a new system, new coaches and a new attitude. PHS has the new facilities, now lets give the kids a chance to play for a successful program. Joe Albrecht, Ralph Applegate or whoever is in charge down there,,call for Clifford's resignation..
