The tunnels that you are referring to are part of the old underground system that was used back in the Civil War era for transferring slaves. There are many of these tunnels in other nearby cities. Alot of them would be located near the river and would travel up into the towns to safe houses. Then late at night they would transfer the slaves on out of town in various ways. Go to the library and check it out or go on the internet about the underground railroads and how they were used and where they were.

I know of one tunnel as I viewed part of it a couple of years ago. It is on 2nd.st. in the old Fergie's restaurant which is almost next door to the old brewry. Anyway, in the basement of Fergie's old place there is a huge hole in the floor & this leads to the Ohio river. The hole was full of water but the other end at the river edge is probably closed off with gates to prevent theives from coming into this business. I had also heard of tunnels under the post office going east to under the old shoe factory which is torndown now. As far as Washington Hotel there is a basement but I don't know if the area has been closed over. I have heard about the Biggs Hotel not having a basement at all but it probably has some kind of a crawl space. It is spooky in the Washington Hotel basement, there are several rooms with what looks like a dungeon going towards the south of the river. It is very damp and also I have heard it is haunted (the whole building). I don't know much about the Biggs Hotel, it is probably haunted as well.

Ive heard a little bit on these tunnels.
They are several all over Portsmouth.
There was one that ran from the Old Taylor Mansion on Timlin Hill to the downtown.

The old brick house that sits right before you go over the Offener street levee has one that is bricked up in the basement, i knew the guy who lived there years ago.
The one at the post office is sealed up and has a gate on it.

There was some that was under the old Selby Shoe factory that they tore down, but they were mostly used to conduct the extra heat from the factory to the neighboring houses around the area.
Ive heard reports of homless people living in them.

Ive also heard a guy name Jack Noel, supposivly rummaged threw them years ago and found known artifacts and loot.

The one that is under the Brewery runs to the old Ice House which they transported ice through to the brewery almost a century ago.

And several houses have ive known of have passage ways in the basements, but most have been bricked up to prevent "wonderers" and vermin out.

I'd like to make a docamentary on forgotten past of Portsmouth, theres alot of people who still know of things around town and id like to gather this info up before something happens to them and it could be preserved for the future.

I had been in part of the tunnels but since then it too has been sealed, id like to video it as much as possible.

To "the stand up man"....i know of a portsmouth historian that may be interested in helping you out. If you're interested let me know a way to get ahold of you and i'll see what i can do. He worked in the west end of portsmouth for years and knows all the old buildings and such in the historic area. He also knows alot of the old time forgotten history to the area..and some of the old forgotten folklore that goes with it. He's helped with a few other documentaries and has helped the portsmouth public library alot.

The old Wil Car, was a service tunnels that used to have steam pipes in them.
Some of the tunnels went jus a block or so, some went to other buildings. While some had multiple entry ways, they are still access places that people do not make metion, cause of looting, theiving and unsavory dealings.

There is a old abandon subway system thats under Cincinatti Ohio, that people dont knows there.
It never was finished and has miles and miles of passage ways that still look pretty neat.

Country girl, i myself would like to have someone contact me as well about some info.
Ive got a great wealth of valued history in my brain and in journals, about Scioto County.

Across from 2727 Robinson Ave there was a old barber shop called "Virgils" next to it on the corner, which is also next to the Portsmouth Little Theater there is a underground room, ive been in it, it was actually a old basement left behind from a old Hardware store that once stood there decades ago.
