Is Portsmouth Marching Band a competition band or do they just play at football games/parades?

They don't know how to play at a football game.

They need to learn when to play and when not to play at the games.

Also some better music would help.

Watch Ironton, or Logan sometime, or Jackson a few years back.

I also think their director should present himself better; he always looks like he needs a shower, doesn't look very professional.

PHS bad used to be awesome on the 70's, but has fallen on hard times with low numbers. We need Billy Watson.

For such a small band, the P.H.S. band sounds good. They use to be really good many years ago. You are right about the director. He looks nasty all the time. He should let a student direct the band at ballgames instead of him getting up there to lead them. They need a field commander to direct the band.

is it true that you must weigh, at least, 250 pounds to try out for flag corps at PHS?

hahahahaha

That was an intelligent reply,
Like I said watch Ironton play Eye of the Tiger, and tell me PHS band is a good football band. Our band just doesn't know how to play or what to play for football.

I do agree David is very good at what he does.

It's sad what the band has become :( They used to be good. If they did some actual hard work they could be good again.

They do not know how to march.
They are always out of step.
I can barely hear them at basketball games and football games.
The trumpets can't control their sound.
David is the only good thing in that band.
Their band teacher should at least ACT like he wants to be there.
You cannot hear the flutes at all.
I would like to add what I said about David being the only good thing in the band, the whole percussion section is also(with david) the only good thing in the band.
They really NEED more work. I agree with football fan, Ironton's band or Logan's band could out-do the Portsmouth band. I'm not trying to be mean at all, but please get better because I would like to see the band like it used to be.

Are you seriously stooping to this level? Where in the definition of a high school flag corps or color guard does it say that every member must be pencil thin? Any girl or guy of any size shape or color is welcome to sign up and try out! Sign ups are actually this Friday after school in the band room. They have a new flag instructor this year and 3 returning girls and who cares if they are big or not! As long as they work hard and actually like doing it, it shouldn't matter what they look like. If you don't like it then don't watch. Obviously it's not that bad, you noticed them enough to make a comment so they must be doing something right! I love those girls and the new instructor seems pretty cool. Could you do what they do? Probably not! And even if you could, you would never compare to the potential these girls have!! So back off a little and cut them some slack because what they do and what they go through isn't easy.

I agree who cares how big they are! As long as they keep those flags a twirling (and well lol)!

I assume that everyone is posting about the PHS MARCHING band that performs during halftime at football games, not the concert or jazz band. The musically challenged usually only notice the band during football games and expect a show band to entertain them while they visit the concession stand and bathrooms.I did not get to see the PHS marching band this year,so I'm not sure if they bowed to the pressure like Wheelersburg and put something simple together to entertain the football fans or if they worked on a show to compete. Many of you are not aware that marching bands compete with other bands on Saturdays in the fall. Friday night halftime is practice for them. Give them some respect.

PHS has not had a competition band for several years now. I don't believe since Mr. Freytag left. This means the only thing they do is football games and parades.
You say that the Burg band has bowed to the pressure, and put together a something simple to entertain the football fans. Isnít the idea to entertain your audience? Since PHS doesnít do competitions their only audience is the football fans, why not play to them and the student body?
As far as simple goes PHS plays very simple music, if you listen to the band they round up to notes instead of hitting notes. The drum cadence is incredibly easy and it is obvious that there have been changes to most pieces the band plays to make them easier.

Ironton is the best example of what we should do. They play good music; they get involved with games and make it hard for opposing teams to hear when driving into the west end zone at Tank. Also there majorettes ( not flags) are great dancers and put on a good show.
